EXCLUSIVE BLOG ANNOUNCEMENT AHEAD OF ON AIR ANNOUNCEMENT.

Chris Evans | 14:49 UK time, Tuesday, 11 November 2008

Now hear this...

....We are just two nights away from this year's CHILDREN IN NEED DRIVETIME DINE AND DISCO AUCTION, this TIME with ADDED DRIVE AND DINE... it's GOING to BE very very special.

We realise tough times require tough calls and so in order to get you to part with your hard earned cash this year. The Drivetime think tank has been in session night and day for the last couple of months and do you know what ?... I think we may have cracked it...

THIS YEAR'S DRIVETIME DINE AND DISCO will once again meet up for golf in the morning to BATTLE it out for THE MULBERRY cup with exhibitions, nearest the pin and longest drive BEFORE breaking for lunch and JONNY's famous pub quiz, top prize a night here with us at the show. After which, a quick wash and brush up, frocks on for the girls and then off to my pub for fizz, fine wine and fabulous fair in the form of five courses produced by GIORGIO LOCATELLI, the best Italian chef this side of heaven. Then it's prize-giving and time for me to spin some tunes and get you dancing like you're a teenager in our funky disco teepee during which OCEAN COLOUR SCENE, the best live band I have ever WITNESSED, will PERFORM TO rock whatever's left of your socks off...

The next morning for those who are still alive, it'll be off to Goodwood for the festival of speed and some really really really amazing vintage motorcar and aeroplane action.

There are just 30 tables of two available this year for the 30 highest bids which will be invited during the second hour of this Thursday's show. That's between six and seven...

So what's going to happen in the first hour? Well how about some added DRIVE AND DINE...

Between 5.00 and 6.00 on this THURSDAY'S show, we will be auctioning off places to be in The Drivetime Magnificent Seven. In which seven of the finest sports cars ever produced will be up for auction. The seven successful bidders for these cars will then come to Radio 2 on the Friday of the weekend of the DRIVETIME DINE AND DISCO, where we will set off in a stunning convoy and head down to the New Forest and to the idyllic setting of the CHEWTON GLEN HOTEL. There we shall talk cars, have spas and then enjoy a mouth watering banquet all together at the top table.

The following morning it's once again GENTLEMEN or LADIES start your ENGINES and off we blast to meet up with the rest of the gang and the golf and the food and the dancing and the band and Goodwood.

THE SEVEN CARS WE ARE TALKING HERE ARE...

(DRUM ROLL)

...this years concourse winning Ferrari Dino, ... the fabulous Ferrari F40, the ferocious Ferrari 275 GTB 4 cam, the BEAUTIFUL Ferrari Lusso, the monster Ferrari 288 gto (the car Stirling Moss declared the greatest car he'd ever driven), The Ferrari 250 SWB Short Wheel Base plus the world record breaking James Coburn California Spyder...

The magnificent seven take to the road for the first time, followed by the DRIVETIME DINE AND DISCO. Be in it to win it. The bidding starts this Thursday at five past five.

sounds great CLP - unfortualely to not have thousands to spare so cannot take part - but well done to thouse who do

    jealous moi? a little

    super bp x

  • Comment number 2.

Oh wow Chris you are spoiling your listeners - what a time will be had by all.

    Chewton Glen is fabulous.

    Good luck to all bidders.

  • Comment number 3.

Good luck to all the successful bidders hope you all have great fun and the money is going to a great cause good luck all

  • Comment number 4.

Sounds fandabbie dosie but alas I don't have the pre requisite oodles of cash to be able to bid. I'll do my bit by pledging a song though.

Good luck to all bidders and to all CiN findraisers, hope loads of cash is raised despite these times of credit crunch.

  • Comment number 5.

Awwwwww I feel all deflated now. I'm in the "can't afford that" club. Sounds fab tho - hope it raises loads for CiN!

  • Comment number 6.

    Hello Chris,

Gosh! Sounds fab- just one question, probably a stupid one, before I start counting my dosh- do we get to keep the car? Are we talking thousands here or many many tens of thousands...? Ok that's two questions but it's important to understand the ball park.....

I hope it all goes well; important to remember though- the ocean is made of tiny drops...

Oh! you rotters - you never let us know there was a new blog and left us merrily posting on the previous blog- tut tut!

Drivetime Dine and Disco sounds great esp. if you are into Golf and cars. Well Done Chris - youv'e organised a corker there.

  • Comment number 8.

WOW ..... please can we have a £5 shot (or so) for all the paupers - you pay the money to have the chance of getting put in the pot to win one set of tickets. I reckon you would get enough people willing to do that to make up the same amount as other punters pay for their two tickets. I guess it would be difficult to organise though...

Have a great time, and, yes, me too very, very slightly jealous!

    jx

ps Sorry, CtD would have liked to chat with you more about it but can't as new job is a bit more severe than old one at the mo. Hope no offence taken and look forward to chatting more soon, one day, perhaps...

  • Comment number 9.

I just knew it would happen! The only sure fire way to get CLP to post his new blog is for me to do a long post on the old one at exactly the same time! It's uncanny! How long were you going to leave me over there on me own, it was a bit scary...anyway, I've left it over there as new blog, new start.

CLP it sounds out of this world and out of my league! Can there be a large hall hired for the poor people to eat chips in? We could help serve and wash up too! Nah, not bitter really, hope you make oodles of cash which of course is the point of it all.

Got to dash, see yers later,

Goodness me Christoff - that sounds a bit of a whizz!

May I borrow your fingerless gloves and quill if you please Diva - need to start counting my pennies.
Darn it - forgot! - put them all in the pennies for CiN at the bank!

Good luck to all the bidders.

    Big chief CLP

How can a lowly lonely handsome Irish Blogger become involved in this extravaganza??? - one who is broke as well . . . !!

    DtM

  • Comment number 13.

Well said JenE [post 8] - I'd happily pay £5 or £10 to have a small chance of being the lucky one out of thousands (or even tens of thousands) of listeners who was picked out of a hat to join in.

Yes, all the money goes to a good cause and many of us could spare that sort of sum, but the proportion of listeners who can cough up tens of thousands of pounds on their own for something like this must be tiny.

Good luck to them and all that - but it's not the world most of us live in even if we have reasonably paid jobs!

    What do you think Chris?

Dook/Boleyn just about to do same (following long telephone call) but checked first - read your blogs though!

    Hiya Chris,

Well, it all sounds fantastic, but of course as I have expressed before, it's completely impossible for most of us to come up the necessary dosh it's going to take to be in with any chance of winning.

Good luck to everyone who can get involved in the auction, but I don't agree with it, as I said last week. I have boycotted my beloved Terry this week for the very same reason.

I shall, however, donate my contribution on Friday during CiN which - when it all started in 1980 - was all that was expected of the general public.

    C xx

    P.S. Still love you, Chris!!

  • Comment number 18.

Chrissie - I had to turn Terry off too.

Love the comment above about little drops making oceans. So very very true.

  • Comment number 19.

Good luck to the rich listeners...sooo jealous!

But it is for a very, worthy cause so I hope that a good time is had by all.

Boleyngirl, I did get your message thank you so much for that. And I did reply through fb so you should have an email sitting on there somewhere.

  • Comment number 20.

I agree with everyone, a very worthy cause and if I had more cash, the Spyder sounds a car I would happily sell the house for, unfortunately it may be a tad small for my family and I, cos thats where we would all have to live!!

Sorry it has been a while since I last signed it, used to sign in as mjg but i have been blessed with more projects with children and young people and has meant time away from the laptop when christophe is on so listen in good old fashioned fm and then catch up with my blog family later!!

great show christophe - loving it as always

  • Comment number 21.

I am sure I can't afford a table but we do live close to the Mulberry and go there regularly - it is fantastic!

I am already jealous of those who can go!

  • Comment number 22.

GREAT! And who said money wasn`t important?

A £5/£10 raffle for the not so rich would have been nice, but... things don`t work like that.

Hmm, yes a smashing idea Christophe for those people who've a bit of dosh put by. As most on here have said though, it's not for me. Hope you will give some consideration to JenEwan's idea, which is a splendid one.

Still, all in aid of a good cause, so best of luck to the bidders and hope much cash is raised.

Chrissie, didn't hear Wogan's show, what happened?

Been to Hobbycraft today, spent far too much money, but am excited about this year's Christmas cards now. Colours all sorted, card-making to begin shortly :-)

Yes, what did happen in the Togmeister's show?? I've been on a day off today and didn't surface until 15 mins into Ken Bruce.

AF- making your own christmas cards! How fantastically artistic and so personal too. Am determined I'm going to start the shopping on Friday (well once I've been to the hairdresser!). Not too many people to buy for but they are tricky customers so any ideas greatly appreciated.

    Evening

Terry's show all week is the "things money can't buy auction" - y'know the kinda thing - ten grand for a round of golf with The Togmeister, twelve grand to cook with Marco Pierre White ..... hey ho!

Just cooked a lovely WeightWatchers curry: coriander chicken, served with basmati rice. Although I don't go to fat club any more I love all my WW cookbooks.

Jen - no offence taken in the slightest! Let us know how the new job's going tho.

Right, nipping over to the dark side to have my goes ...

  • Comment number 30.

yet another thing that the vast majority of listeners have zero chance of winning?
it just panders to the egos of those who flaunt their money.....
so what if its for charity?..try doing a raffle at a fiver a ticket, then we can ALL join in

  • Comment number 31.

    Evening each

Right, I'm off to buy a lottery ticket, and if I win the millions, I'll be bidding for a table and taking you all with me. It'll be a bit of a squeeze, but that'll be nice, won't it?

    xxxx

  • Comment number 32.

Annie-G, Hopefully you'll fly us expats in for the event as well.......

  • Comment number 33.

Personally i can't see what the problem is with "things that money can't buy" I'm not in that league and don't listen to it (i don't like Wogan at all so it's hardly a hardship) the whole exercise is to make as much money as poss and in that regard thats what it does, and does VERY well indeed. Just like the drivetime dine n dinner thingamabob. At this rate i'll not even be getting a track played on friday. As for having a raffle for the DDD on thursday . . . .. it wouldn't raise enough money.

If people are silly enough to waste their money then they are free to do so however they so wish . . .they earn it.

Steve, if you don't ask you don't get......

Thanks Annie-G, wouldn't be funny if you actually won the lottery. Over here they have mega lotteries that sometimes have a pot of $50million......

There was one sad local story of a guy who one the lottery (I think it was $1000 a week for life) and the same week was diagnosed with cancer. He wanted to transfer the winnings to a family member so it could help pay for medical bills. Of course they wouldn't left him and he died I think 9 months later.......

    Cheery aren't I?

  • Comment number 40.

    Bondy,

    that seriously sucks :(

  • Comment number 41.

Any good news? Things we can't afford..? WeightWatchers' curry..? Tut tut bloggers - I've been lurking for weeks and so looking forward to joining in the recent frivolities. Yes, I know the rule!! So - what's the best thing to happen to you today? Mine was getting thru the ironing. Sorry, I'm adding nothing am I? Somebody must be able to pick things up!

  • Comment number 42.

Steve, I know what was a local outcry but the lottery is done by the gov, so it didn't make any difference not surprisingly. All he wanted was enough for medical expenses.....

  • Comment number 43.

#41 - by far the best thing to happen to me today will be in about an hour's time when i get into a lovely snuggly bed with my fantastic husband!

sorry you didn't like the WW curry!

  • Comment number 44.

CtD, I take it the spuds are optional.....LOL

Under the list of "Things I miss as an expat" a good curry would be one of them....

  • Comment number 45.

Yes - have to agree about the husband bit (mine I mean - tho' I'm sure Mr CTD is lovely!) Other partners are available! And no, I'm not a "smug married", honest!
What about books? Have just finished No Time For Goodbye - fabulous and the Woman From The 5th - Super, but... (Won't say anymore). Now reading Toby Young - utter rubbish. In fact, he's got 10 pages - then I'm off! Don't believe in started so I'll finish - too many good books out there.

  • Comment number 46.

007 - we have a wonderful shop in town called The Spice Box - it's owned by a lady called Rafi Fernandez - she's had several books published on Indian cuisine.

You can buy all the components for a curry in there and side dishes/breads etc, but the best thing she does are "cury packs" - everything blended in one pack - all you do is add the meat and any other "main" ingredients (coconut / tomatoes etc). They really are fantastic - try goog'n it - I'm 100% sure she does mail order - even over the pond.

  • Comment number 61.

All sounds very swish and luxurious to me. But to quote that now, very, very famous waiter, “I know nothing...“ about golf! So I`ll stick to cars. I take it we are bidding for a ride in a dream car, and not as the blog seems to imply for the actual car?

But which car ride do you bid for. Here`s my tips for potential bidders. The Dino is a very, very pretty car but with only a V6 engine, it could appeal to the Britt Ekland types wanting to pretend they where dating the Pink Panther! The F40 is awesomely fast, deliberately over stated with a spoiler the size of a jumbo wing and two turbo chargers the size of barns on show beneath a clear engine cover. But on a twisty country road I’ve read you can have more fun in a Peugeot 106 GTI, it`s a car for the school boy in you. The GTB-4 and 250 GTO have racing pedigree in the family, curves in all the right places and the V12 engine, so the best sound. Bid for these Enzo beauties if your from the old school and a Ferrari enthusiasts through and through. The Lussso really is a ladies car, elegant and something for the rich and beautiful people to drive. Pretend your Grace Kelly, play Chris Rea`s song "girl in a sports car" while driving in the early morning sun. The 288 GTO has never appealed to me, it was designed in an era where lights looked as if they where added as an after thought. Wondrously powerful like the F40 with twin turbos but really a puffed up 308 GTB, it’ll appeal to the boy racer. So my choice has to be the California Spyder, it’s V12, open top, stylish and a supreme classic. You get to hear the symphony that is the Ferrari V12 while enjoying the wind in your hair. And if Mrs Evans is driving - coorr what a combination!

Remember, ladies/gentlemen/whatever, if you are going to come on in and wind the troops up, at least make an effort to sign off with the right name.

I'd sorely love to go to any of the events being auctioned by Terry this week. But they don't compare to Chris's proposed weekend. It sounds fantastic. I love the idea of a lottery or some sort of phone-in for a chance to win a place.

I'm thinking along the lines of finding a golden ticket in a Willy Wonka chocolate bar. There's an idea Chris!

Having said that, I loved it this morning when the Mark Knofler prize went for such a massive amount. You can't beat it when people with money decide to do the right thing with it.

However - I did wonder whilst 45 mins with Mark Knopfler would be - oooee swoon - no words could describe for me ---- but signed never to be repeated stuff? mmmm?

    Evening all,

Really shouldn't be on here. Really should be tucked up in bed, but seeing as I am here, I would like to say that much as it would be nice to join in the frivolity of DDD, or bidding lots of money for money can't buy experiences (contradition methinks) - I think it is pretty clear that its not gonna happen for me or the majority of others on here. Still, I do not begrudge those that can, and hope they have a wonderful time, and that it is worth every penny. Yeah yeah, I know, good cause and all that, but lets face it, you want your moneys worth right?! CiN is not my charity of choice - (ooh, prepare to be shot down) and tend to contribute much more locally for unknown charities closer to my heart. But thats probably just me.

    Anyway, rambled enough...

Welcome to all the noobs, and I think, Suzie Boozy, you will find its Ms Angry!

Hi, I shouldn't be here either and will regret being up this late tomorrow..however. Been wound up by a selfish teenager (again) and trying to wind down.

Give myself ten minutes then must be off to bed.

No mwa not just you - I do contribute to CiN but also - as you say smaller guys who have NO other funding bar contributions - plus a few others - in fact - must speak to the boss (me)- need a rise!

Just love to think - Vicars wife and Ctd commenting on it too - earlier on here - the ocean is made of tiny drops. Great comment.

changing the subject entirely, well, actually adding to the book comments I suppose, has anyone come across the Twilight books, with Edward the vampire?

Friends of mine are raving about them, telling me to get and read as soon as so they can talk about it with me.

Might get it on Thursday to see what all the fuss is about. Off to DD country to do christmas shopping, and my rule is to treat yourself at the same time so you don't begrudge it too much.

    thats all folks,

    night.

Ok so they are now all in bed, and so off I go. I enjoy the peace and quiet when everyone is in bed....no hassle.
