Don't Bring Those Germs In Here, We've Got Plenty Of Our Own.

Chris Evans | 11:08 UK time, Wednesday, 4 March 2009

Felled, all three of us, by the mighty fist of...

... the cold bugs.

Mummy and the boy both sick as a dog and a pup yesterday, several requests coming in on my mobile phone to gather up baby safe antidotes whilst I was in that there big London place during the course of yesterday afternoon but not for me - no, for I was fine and dandy, until I stepped o'er the threshold chez nous just after eight last night, that is.

It appears the bugs made a beeline for my schnozzel and had me coughin' and splutterin' like a good 'un no more than half an hour later, and all over the spaghetti bolognaise I had masterfully set on-the-go. What the heck happened there ?

This morning I feel like someone's stuck me head in the middle of a haystack at the peak of hay fever season. Today, it feels more like an allergy to me than a cold and colds don't come on that quickly - do they ?

What if I'm allergic to the tissues I'm using ? As everytime I go to blow my nose, sneeze or wipe my eyes everything seems to get worse. What if one day we'll all became allergic to tissues, what would we blow into then ? We could all share one of Sir Tel's monickered real hankies, silk no doubt, worth a fortune on eBay I bet.

There's only one thing for it, ten extra lines on the lottery tonight, don't ask me why.

Show time will be ok though, there's the magic of adrenaline to rely on. Good for when you're bad but leaving you all the more knackered when it wears off.

See if you can spot the sniffle.

CLP.

You can get this really cool thing for sucking snot out of babies nose so he can feed and sleep again. I never did it but my husband was a brave man a couple of times and actuallyfound it pretty exciting and satisfying - which I reckon would appeal to you too!!

    Chris,

What a shame for you guys - really exhausting and it's awful when you feel lousy.

I know it's rotten for you and Tash, but poor wee Noah - his first cold already!

Colds strike like thieves in the night - one minute you are feeling fine, next minute you are wrapped up in a duvet, absolutely certain that your time has come!

    Thinking of all of you!

    C xx

P.S. I didn't make up the thing about thieves and colds, I have read that somewhere ..... but I thought it sounded quite dramatic!

Yo CLP And Family, Yo Family Of CLP Bloggers.....

    Bingo Star ere.....

CLP - Wooooooooooo....... remind sme of yesterdee at London Euston Station...... ave noticed a new bug/ cold seems ter be a brewing!!!!
So many in London suddenly sneezing.... coughing... THE SIGN!!!!!!!
The sign of a new cold/ flu outbreak!!!!
Yesterdee at Euston a waz waiting for me train ter be called on the concourse... next thing someone sneezes near me.... it waz a case of..... 'old breath... DO NOT intake air az it might be contaminated with their cold (sneeze particle travel along way yer know - maybe 30 feet plus) grab suitcase... still 'olding breath... walk ter other part of concourse... AWAY from potential cold!!!!!
    Two minutes later..... another 'ahhhhhhhhhccchhhhhhhhhhoooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!@!@!!@!@!'
Noot again a thought.... 'old breath... gather bags.... swerve a little left.. little right.. little stright.... AWAY from potential cold!!!!!!
This DAMN kept 'appening CLP..... a tell yer by the time a goot on the train a didn't ave a cold but felt worn down like a did ave one!!!!!

PS - 'ope all who do ave colds get better soon!!!!!!

Okay PART # DAMN 3 ere.......

Bingo Star's Experience Of The U2 On The ´óÏó´«Ã½ Roof - PART 3

So after the gig waz over it waz time ter 'ead arooound ter try and get The Bono, The Edge, The Mullen and INDEED The Clayton ter sign me Charity A ter Z and me U2 album i'd brought with me instead of me guitar!!
But deep inside... after seeing the band earlier... a goot a feeling they are noot A ter Z type signers!!!!
I know signing an A ter Z iz a sign of behaving/ moving in 'Mysterious Ways'!!!!!
Maybe even they won't sign a thought!!!!
A mean yer must get fed up forever signing wherever yer go, ter the point of writers cramp of the extreme.
It must feel like enough writing ter write a novel. The novelty must wear off after 30 plus years of signing yer 'graph. But then a thought if a waz in their shoes... even if a now 'ated signing.... az it waz such a BIG occasion and az a suppose it's a job, although yer work iz demanding, yer always living out of a suitcase, always travelling.... like 'The Wanderer'. But a thought it's better than being a trucker working 15 'our dees which iz what ave done.
So maybe afterall... they will sign!!
I 'ad ter make a BIG decision... do a try and get me A ter Z signed and risk nowt... or selfishly get me U2 album of pride and joy.... sorry 'Pride In The Name Of Love'.... album signed!!!!
Soz all... a used the Bingo mind tuition, aka intuition, and came up with the latter!!!
So after tracking down the area where a thought the band would exit the ´óÏó´«Ã½... Again.... five limos, 94 'eavies, 43 stewards and 39 ploice were the clue!!!
A waited for 45 minutes.... pen ready... cap off.... album ready.... and A ter Z open at the ready.... just in case!!!!!
After a bit of the stewards pushing uz aroound.... abit... moving uz arooound.... abit..... changing the barriers... abit.... changing the barriers back.... abit..... moving the limos.... abit..... then moving them back.... abit..... then the ploice changing their layout.... abit..... then back.... abit.....
Eventually.... suddenly..... the crowd at the other end of the barriers.... energized... erupted.... like The Edge's amp turned on, but without the finesse of The Edge!!!!
Then it 'appened.... The U2 came outta the Beeb....
Bono led out.... and 'e didn't seem ter be signing. E selected a few outta the crowd ter shake 'ands... then 'e came towards the small group I waz in.... we were all asking 'im ter sign our U2 memrobillia and me with me A ter Z descreetly... 'e tuoched a few of uz and shook a few 'ands!!!
Az I waz on the end and closest to 'is limo... 'e came ter me last and grabbed me 'and and patted me on the shoulder three times.... I asked 'im "please sign this" 'olding out me U2 album.... 'Please'!!!! But 'e just said either "bless you" or "nice ter see you".... Can't remember the exact words az a waz in awe of the moment!!!
Am just glad 'e didn't add 'nice' at the end or for a minute it could ave been a Brucey catchphrase - know what am sayin'!!!!
I thought 'old Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me'!!!! Then a thought NO.... noot the last two.... U2 friend!!!!
Then 'e walked off inter 'is limo!!!! I realised.... it waz a case of 'A Still Aven't Found What Am Looking For'!!!
A thought a don't blame 'im for noot signing... maybe 'e's tryin ter keep 'is 'graph value up abit.... noot that i'd ever be selling!!!!
Then The Edge didn't even come near uz.... DAMN IT!!!!!!! E goot inter the furthest away limo with just a smile and a wave!!!!
A waz so on the edge of getting The Edge's 'graph.... but noot ter be... THIS TIME!!!!!
But then along came Larry Mullen... U2's drummer and the found, the leader of U2!!! Yes at 14 it waz 'im who 'eld put a notice on 'is school notice board about forming a band!!!
E came up to our area and started signing for all of us!!!
I gave 'im my pen and album... and 'e signed.... BUT.... 'e said to me "it's not working"..... 'e 'anded them back..... 'oh my god.... nyet'..... It wouldn't 'Paint It Black'!!!
'NOT know, sorry now' a thought! 'My goodness whatta time for me pen ter stop working.... it must be the cold frozen me ink' a thought!!!! I felt 'Numb'!!!
    AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!@@@@!@!!!!!!!
The Mullen waz signing for others so quickly a thrust me album forward 'oping 'e would use someone elses pen..... panic times..... BIG!!!!!
Luckily.... 'e did sign again using someone else's pen and sign with care and perfection!!!!
E's signed me album perfectly in the middle!
E 'anded it back to me.... and I thanked 'im!!!! PHEW..... relief!!!!! I felt an 'Elevation'!!!!
The Larry goot inter 'is limo and off they all went.... except for The Clayton.... aka The Bassist!!! The last 'One' out of the ´óÏó´«Ã½!!!
So we all waited for at least another 20 minutes!!! All with one 'Desire'!!! Ter get 'is 'graph!!!!
While waiting CLP walked past uz.... busy on 'is mobile... (phone that iz... noot mobile disco rig)
I went ter say 'ello but realised 'e waz engrossed deep in conversation so 'eld back!!!! I decided ter 'Stay'!!!! Away!!!
The man might ave been discussing rusks, giving Tash some advice or possiblly the other way arooound 'Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own'!!!!!.... So a thought best noot ter interupt!!!!!!
Then a little while later... we all goot told The Clayton 'ad done a runner.... it waz a cover aving the last limo ready and some 'eavies!!!!!
It's then a realised it must ave been The Clayton.... the bloke dressed az Steve Wright's pizza delivery operatative!!!!! I felt a 'Lemon'!!!! A thought they must think 'I Believe In Father Christmas'!!!!
I thought it waz strange az Wrightie waz on 'olidee that week and doesn't normally order a 'awaian on a Fridee!!!!!
It waz time ter 'Walk On'..... 'With Or Without You' and 'Get On My Boots'!!!!!! (Bit rude that last bit... if yer now, sorry know the true meaning of that)(Good advice though.... 'elps stop AIDS spreading!!!)

DIG IT..... DIG IT........ DIG IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment number 14.

DAMN IT.... yesterdee a goot #22 again.. me lucky #!!!!!

    oh Chris,

Just remembered some drops that we put in Boys nose when he's stuffed up (think its Nasosal) - basically saline - but does the job of keeping babba's nose clear to sleep.

I was really sceptical at first, but it seemed to work, and the Boy did get used to the drops, in fact, when he's all stuffy now he goes and finds it at bedtime, so it must work!!

Am currently suffering from Dust due to house move.

Anyhoo, Christophe, it takes just 2 1/2 hours for a cold to develop from first getting the germ up the shnozzle. Then it can last up to nine days depending on your general state of health. The germs themselves can live for up to thirty seconds in the air, so if someone sneezes by you, RUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!! Unfortunately, if they sneeze in your face, and they've got a cold, then you're b*ggered I'm afraid.

    bless you all

The love story of Ralph and Edna...

Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to, doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.

Ralph and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool. Ralph suddenly jumped into the deep end.

He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed there.

Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled him out. When the Head Nurse Director became aware of Edna's heroic act she immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital, as she now considered her to be mentally stable.

When she went to tell Edna the news she said, 'Edna, I have good news and bad news. The good news is you're being discharged, since you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving the life of the person you love. I have concluded that your act displays sound mindedness.

The bad news is, Ralph hung himself in the bathroom with his bathrobe belt right after you saved him. I am so sorry, but he's dead.'

Edna replied, 'He didn't hang himself, I put him there to dry. How soon can I go home?'

  • Comment number 37.

    Oh dear.....

...anyone would think you guys have the plague!!!

    IT'S (at worst) A COLD!!!

A cold (coryza virus) is totally different from the 'flu (influenza virus) and guys, three sneezes is NOT the 'flu!!! Actually, sneezing is not a primary symptom of 'flu.

Karvol as suggested by cornishgirlie are effective and absolutely safe. I would NOT recommend a nasal sucker unless you know what you're doing. Keep Ickle Pickle cool, let him feed as and when he wants (I always felt my babies found it easier to feed when I laid down with them on the bed when they were snuffly) and there's really little else you can do.

If he's very snuffly, try getting some steam built up in the bathroom by running the hot tap with the windows and door closed, then taking him in there. A little Karvol on a tissue near him to mingle with the steam is good too.

hazel-love; have you been checked for nasal polyps? They're the commonest cause of a persistent high level snotty nose (the technical term is a post-nasal drip..... which is not a wimpy guy with a big nose!!!) They are also easily dealt with. It can also be chronic sinusitis. I suggest you get referred to an ENT specialist.

    Good grief....blue sky and sunshine....

    Hi..............anyone remember me?

Apologies for my absence - nothing sinister, I've just been very busy this last week or so.

A.....tishooooo!! Me too. My hay fever seems to be triggered by tree pollen and as usual it started in earnest this weekend just as March came in. I find the allergy eye drops that are available from any pharmacy really help as my eyes get so itchy, red and sore!

Hope the little one is better soon Chris as it is harder for them to cope when they don't understand what's going on.

I thought of a good and different ARF request last night - and now I've forgotten it again. Must be my age! If I remember what it was before Friday I'll post it, just in case I strike lucky for once.

  • Comment number 43.

Right here's some top tips for you (my little girl got a cold even younger than poor old Noah!). If Tash is still feeding him get her to express some breast milk and using a sterilised syringe squirt some up his nose. Lord only knows why it works but it does! Other things are to put a pan of water on to boil and sit in the kitchen with Noah as it bubbles and boils away shut the door. Or if you can't do that put him in his moses basket (or similar) and have the shower running all steamy. Raise his bed up if you can at one end so he's on a slope.

Hope you all feel better soon!

Jumpy, carvol is like olbas oil - sort of mentholy - but less strong and specifically for babies and young-uns I think.

I used to put a couple of drops of olbas oil in a mug of hot water in the bedroom - really helps with snuffly noses.

meandjumpingbean - Karvol is brilliant, expecially capsules I think it has a mixture of menthol, cinnamon, and pine oil.

Hankies and colds don't go together...yuk!!

Personally I prefer olbas oil as I always found karvol stronger and the smell made me heave.

We get the olbas oil tissues too now.

Build up natural antibodies in the system which eventually makes them fitter in the long run. When antibiotics are only used as a last resort to save lives children withstand the outer world much better and don't have to keep depending on medicines.

For a blocked nose, introduce some steam in the nursery from a kettle in the corner and ask the doctor if a menthol and eucalyptus humidification is allowed at that age. I am not sure with today's rules on that. I used to use Wright's Coal Tar into the atmosphere and that was very good. Don't know if they still do that now.
Anybody know the answer to that?

Take all fluffy toys out of the cot and have any blankets wrapped in sheets so that the minute hairs do not aggravate the very thin linings of the lungs and tubes.

Hope little Noah gets back his health soon.

Have you got little boats on an elasic across the pram or cot to look at? Just a thought I made up.Would keep him happy.

    Hi again all,

Sorry to hear of all the snotty-ness, I hate colds but have been fairly lucky so far this winter, difficult to type with fingers crossed. So I wish all coldies a speedy recovery with snot levels dropping rapidly.

Happy Birfday FoM and aA's daughter.

Well, I couldn't resist and rang the agency, the reason I've not heard is that the last person to be interviewed had car trouble and had to re-arrange, so the soonest any news will be forthcomming is Friday, well maybe I can get on with the 101 things I should have been doing instead of moping around feeling like a failure (this could obviously still be the result, but wait and see).

I think I'll hover the stairs - deep joy, not
    Catch ya later
(any badly spelt items are on account of the afformentioned crossed fingers)

PF - listening to Aerosmith radio on last.fm

I really don't know how I survived the working day before making this marvellous discovery!! Its fantastic!! Just pop in an artist and it plays a "radio" channel of music of that ilk. Faves this week so far: The Cure radio, Aerosmith Radio, T-Rex Radio, Bowie Radio ....... had to turn Duran Duran Radio off tho - too much Kajagoogoo!

    Now listening to Thin Lizzy.

Maybe I should try TT Radio ... !?!?

Argh Nicki - I know that feeling well!! I had 2 interviews for this job, and was told after the second that it was between me and one other person and that a decision would be made in the next 48 hours. About 2 weeks later ... I finally got the job!!!

I don't think the people who interview realise the angst they cause by making us wait!!!

    Keeping everything crossed for you!

Dearest AstoundingAndi, thank you for your concern and yes I have...been to more ENT specialists than you can shake a stick at...all no blimmin good as the problem seems to stem from the way my spine is...have done all the posture malarkey...but there doesn't seem to be anything which gets shot of it for longer than about 2-3 days at a time...and the doctor just thinks I'm mad as it was a Chiropractor who told me that...and they aren't 'medically qualified'...it doesn't help that I am also chronically allergic to so many things...have tried more remedies than a witch could knock up in her shed...

Ah, Nicki, that is terrible news! Am hoping that the 'car trouble' was really another interview, and they aint' gonna want or get the job which should be yours! All the best matey!

...anyone who has a birthday today...happy birthday to you

    What a mixed blog today!

Dan #27: that joke was too far on the edge for me. I love a good joke, but mental illness I can never find funny.

Andi #37: I know, it's only a cold, but you must remember the panic when your wee tootsie wasn't well. I would have been on the ceiling if MsS had a cold when she was three weeks old!

Happy birthday to MsAndi: hope she is having a wonderful day. I have the joy of looking forward to my own daughter's 18th next week - frightening!

Baaabbiiit#43: great advice for Tash - I hope she is reading the blog today!

And finally, Bingo #13: what a fantastic comment - I felt I was there with you!

    Hi Chris,

Congratulation to you and Tash on baby Noah (I'm always late to the party).

Just wanted to let you know, I know where you're coming from. Been laid up in bed for the past 2 days!

Put on a good show tonight, hopefully I can join you if I can tune in this alarm clock!

Bingo - I like you too but we'll have to agree to disagree re: the U2 issue x CLP plenty of vitamin C is the key

    Afternoon all,
    Just a quickie!

Diva oh desirable one!, please don't book a space at the dinner table for me! I've just been told I may have to work that day, therefore may not even get to Brum! bum!

    DD out

If I don't make it I will be there in Spirits!

    Hi Chezza

Re #'78 - I'd never heard of this Last.fm thing before either but have just tried it and plumped for Take That Radio.

Result - I'd say mixed. It seems to think that TT fans also like other (mainly Irish) boy bands - which I don't. But having found the 'forward' button I've skipped through it and found some other quite interesting choices, some of which I know (like it's playing Robbie W and 'Feel' now) and two which I didn't.

So a novel concept to me and something that may be worth exploring further when I've more time, I think. Thanks for that!

    Not toxic baby germs!!!

baby germs are the worst thing ever, and they affect you a lot more than the baby!

We have a snot sucking thing and she hates it, but stops screaming as soon as its done and takes a very deep breath!

DD - you have to come to Brum - can you not tell your work that you have plans (actually knowing where you work that could be dangerous :-) )

  • Comment number 91.

Sorry to read of the cold bugs.
Lot's of Oranges and Calpol and tonic should do the trick Mr Chris.

Bingo. I really don't know who Aunty Karen is but I do know it's not me. Perhaps we are sort of physchic.

I was reading my horoscope funnily enough Bingo on the Johnathan Cainer website today. It really freaked me out it was so accurate.

Dissing - okey dokey. London? We are missing you already!

derbyfi - my fave has to the The Cure radio: loads of 80s Goth stuff, bit of new wave stuff, and not all doom and gloom at all.

Had a mid afternoon slump yesterday and Ramones radio rocked my little world til I let CLP in at 5!

Chrissie.,....I'll be quite honest but I can't remember my two ever being unwell....

...apart from the Mums and Toddlers Christmas Party incident....

Took #1 daughter aged 10 months in her first real beautiful party dress to the M&T party .... we started in perfect health but by the end of the party (which was not a long time) she looked like a classic medical text book illustration of "Child with Herpes Zoster" .... that's chickenpox!! I could see the vesicles developing before my eyes.... very freaky!!!

Maybe being a midwife and paediatric nurse made me a little blase about minor illness.

Tins, thanks for all fingercrossedness, and your right these HR depts have no idea of the angst they put you under, or maybe they do and just enjoy the power they hold!

Hazel, you seem to have pretty much read my thoughts, even if the 'car trouble' was real, she surely isn't very reliable??

Oh stop that nasty thinking Nicki and take those pins out of the teddy bear! The poor woman must have been distraught (pass the sincerity pills please)

out of the 101 things I had to do down to 98 oh well tommorow is another day (Ann of G Gables strikes again)

Re: snot sucking thingybob, do they make one for grown ups or are we supposed to just blow.

  • Comment number 99.

Andi: chickenpox, remember it well! And, yes you are absolutely right - but I am sure you were not blase as such, just not as panicked as us mere mortals!

I take it, that as a paediatric nurse you performed the miracle that is testing babies' reflexes, which even includes making them stand at 5 days old??!! I have never forgotten that moment with my daughter, before we left the hospital. That, and the "spreading the legs like a chicken" thing to check for clicky hips!! That one still wakens me up in the middle of the night, 18 years on!
