Well Gee thanks but really I had very little do with it.

Chris Evans | 10:12 UK time, Monday, 2 March 2009

I am of course referring to The U2 boys and their much talked about...

... night on the tiles. The roof tiles of the B.B.C. that is - last Friday.

All I did was host the show, the big idea was entirely some other peoples. As much as I'd like to, I cannot take the cascade of credit that was flowing over the pages of this blog in the succeeding hours.

There was a man, there is still a man, at least I think so, there was last time I looked, although only just, called Jeff Smith who was very much the lynch pin of the whole proceedings.

If you were there on Friday night he was easily recognisable as the guy who looked like he hadn't slept for maybe... a year. I don't think I have ever seen a person look so tired.

I was with him backstage afterwards,

"What are you going to do now then ?" I asked him.

"Have another one of these, " he said, gesturing down to what I think was a rather large whisky. Why not ? He deserved it.

It was indeed brilliant, "as good as it gets" as they say. Although I have made a few notes in case we do it again, the main one being;

DON'T STAND WHERE YOU CAN BE SEEN IN THE BACK OF SHOT "DAD DANCING" WHILST THE BIGGEST BAND IN THE WORLD ARE ROCKING OUT IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE PLANET.

I have had several very sweaty moments thinking about this over the weekend.

What of this week ? Let's see, shall we. Here comes another week of Drivetime, buckle up everyone.

CLP.

2009.

X.

P.S. Tash and NOAH sadly didn't make it. I think they knew about the possibility of Dad Dancing and wanted nothing to do with it.

...is a shame wee Noah didn't make it...I'm sure that there will be another internationally acclaimed superstar band who he'll manage to get to see live before he gets much older though...

And Christophe, what did you used to call your dancing BEFORE you became a dad?

LOL Chris, I thought you looked SOOOO cute, you looked so excited and happy!!!

The whole thing was so emotional it made me and daughter cry!

Anyway, nowt wrong with 'dad dancing'. And Tash and Noah are probably watching (and laughing) over and over on Red Button!

AND - you should take some of the credit because you made the whole thing really really exciting!

How's it going Hazel, all settled in now??

    Chris,

I haven't managed to see/hear the U2 extravangaza - will try to do so, even if just to see you dance!

Don't worry, you are not alone: I have been doing the same dance - shuffling from right foot to left foot, swaying to the left and right, almost certainly out of time with the feet - since I was 14!

I know just what you mean about the "sweaty moments" - you suddenly think "oh no, please tell me THAT didn't happen"!

    Great blog, as always. xx

    Morning Christophe

For me, the whole live tele-cast was made complete by the HOOOOG grin firmly planted upon ya bouche! And as for the dad dancing .... you are oh so forgiven.

Just the honour of having it all going down, on your ickle auld show ... wow!

I'm off to ELH after work to get the new U2 album. Prepare for Diva hissy fits if they don't have it for any reason.

Now, howz about starting the show on the high with which Friday's ended:

    Morning Chris,

I've never used the red button on my TV, in fact it took me a while to work out what to do. But I'm glad I did, the concert looked fab and I'm not really a U2 fan. Best bit was poor Sally getting all flustered whilst reading the travel - I could totally see where she was coming from!

You looked great in the background and if everyone was truthful, there is nothing better than watching a Dad dance - because it guarantees to bring a smile to one's face.

I thought you were hilarious in the background...........but in a good way.

As for U2, great musicians that they are, though I'll be glad not to hear anymore about them this week as they are too up their own backsides and should stick to what people like them for best which is performing.

I look forward to getting back to your show which is too good for U2 to take an hour of!!!

    Bingo Star's Experience Of The U2 On The ´óÏó´«Ã½ Roof - PART 1 -

So a turned up Fridee, for the U2 Gig, noot actually realising that there waz gonna be a gig i'd actually get ter see.
A knew if there gonna be on CLP's show for 2 'ours, there's gotta be at least an in studio gig. But when a turned up at BC 'ouse, my goodness, ploice everywhere and jobsworth nutters in 'igh visability vests everywhere. (Give some people abitta power it goes ter their 'eads) ( Just damn glad these temporary stewards don't ever get an afternoon in charge of Britain's nuclear arsenal - aka the red button... and I ain't talkin' ´óÏó´«Ã½ Digital Red Button - know what am sayin'!!!!)
There were crowds everywhere, soon az a saw it all.... a knew something BIG, streetwise, waz gonna 'appen and a realised it's gonna be near impossible ter get me Charity A ter Z signed!!!!
So off a went ter R2 HQ... when a goot there the wazza small crowd, aka we were the dudes in the know that R2 isn't in BC 'ouse but arooound the corner... the area where the U2 were!!!!!
The clues were the limos and the 'eavies outside!!!
We waited outside knowing the U2 would come out. When they did they weren't signing and goot straight inter their wheels!!! Oh no!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nyyyyyaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!
Bono whatta yer tryin' yer do ter me???? (But better does come later)
That's the bit were me watch got onter tv.... (see prev blog).
Yes me blue watch is famous for now!
Know yer might wonder why a bought a blue watch.... well two reasons.... A used ter be called 'The Blue Eyed Boy Wonder From Birkenhead' and also the person who sold it to me in a Tunisian railway station.... told me the blue went with me eyes and would bring me everlasting goodluck!!!!
That's why am still single and just lost 100k on the stockmarket!!!!
Back ter U2... So they goot inter their wheels... as they did a couple of girls shouted "please will you sign, we've come all the way from Brazil??!!?@?!"
Bono shouted back "go to Regent Street later... 6.40!!" (Yer can see this on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ red button... now terdee... and me watch waving in front of the camera)
I waz gonna shout "please sign mine, ave come all the way from Birkenhead"... but somehow a couldn't compete with the Brazilians!!! (sounds abit rude that bit... ain't know why?)
PART 2 ter follow... ave gotta go out.....

    Chow!

    Hi Chris,

You are forgiven for your "Dad dancing." It was so good to see you on TV, you are looking great!

Shame Noah and Natasha didn't make it - I'm sure there will be plenty more opportunities.

ChrissieS - you can't possibly be as bad as me at singing! My dancing is much better - still have all my dancing medals and certificates from many moons ago :o)

Hope you all had good weekends!

Tobes - couldn't believe it yesterday!

  • Comment number 25.

Mary: dancing medals, well done! When I was about 9, I tried to learn Irish dancing. I loved it and thought I was quite good, but in reality I was really awful. I entered dozens of competitions and never even made it through any of preliminary heats! Why I put myself through it, I have no idea!

And, my mum refused to buy me a proper dress - I wore a wee green dress with lace round the sleeves and neck - not quite the same as the girls in Riverdance!

AF: I'm so glad I'm not the only one with the singing (not) qualification!

I loved it Chrissie - did ballet, tap and ballroom. It took up a look of my spare time which was really uncool with my friends, when I was going to dance classes they were going to disco's so being a know all teenager I decided to give up dancing! My poor Mum was so disappointed, she made all my costumes and spent a small fortune for all the lessons and exams. I've regretted it ever since!

    Afternoon all,

On the Ricky Gervais subject, I didn't like the office at first, my brother told me how funny it was so I gave it a go, wasn't that impressed, however shortly after watching and episode I changed jobs and my new boss was, I swear to (anything you fancy) RG's charachter (think thats spelt wrong) he had all the manerisms and everything, after I had pointed this out to a collegue it provided hours of amusement and stiffled childish giggles, to the point of tears rolling down my face and having to evacuate pronto.

I'm sure we've all had managers like that, but I bet mine was the closest, and needless to say The Office became essential viewing.

Debbie, sorry to hear your news, I understand re the scary stuff GPs prescribe, it makes you think 'and this is going to make me feel better??'
I guess you can only give it a try, if it makes you feel worse or rougher in any way stop immediately and go back to GP and tell him/her where to put it and try something else. I think there are some conditions that it takes a bit of trial and error before they get it right. I understand it's all very well saying that, but it's you that has to go through the trial and error. I'm so sorry and will be thinking of you.

Good news on the Betty front.

That way, should Evans pere decide to use material from his son's early years in front of all his friends on the occasion of his 21st birthday, Evans fils will also be able to produce material from the same period!

I adored The Office, but don't always adore Ricky Gervais. I do think he's extremely talented however. I found last year's comic relief sktech a little too near the knuckle, although again, brilliantly done.

I love dancing. Boleynman and I are planning a cha cha for our first dance at the wedding In July, we are doing it to Michael Buble's version of "The Way you look tonight." Our footwork may not please the purists but we're very enthusiastic.

CtD, I know what you mean. The last place I worked went thru regular layoffs for two years before I left. And moral and productivity just kept getting worse and worse as a result. From what I have heard they are still making cuts.... and moral there is at an all time low......

It certainly is not a good place to be in. I really hope you can ride it out. Try and stay positive. Talking to people might help a little, and then of course there's us here....... always ready with a listening and sympathetic ear....

Just before Christmas Cheryl, they were making huge cut backs at Mr Debbie's firm. It was all to happen over two days. People sat waiting for the phone to ring, if a certain number came up on the display you knew what was happening. He said those two days were awful and he felt pretty ill. Guys in his office were called up and went.

Really feel for anyone working with those pressures at the moment.

    Oh poop CtD!

I thought things were looking good for you with your job, fingers crossed!
I don't know what the job market is like near you (same as every place I expect) In my little corner of Herts the only positions advertised are for cleaners or telesales people.
Not that there is anything wrong with either of those jobs it's just not what I do.

I'm on tenterhooks waiting to hear if I'm going to get a second interview.

But I know how you're feeling - bin in that situation a few times.

sending you luck, hugs and higs? (I have no idea what a hig is, but if I have any you're welcome to 'em)

  • Comment number 59.

Good thinking Ctd - it keeps you in the game. As Bond mentionned you could start looking at the ads. Maybe at part-time ads in case you have to come down to 4 days a week and could do something different on day 5. Or maybe use the extra day to get into something you have always wanted to do but never had time to.
I find taking any action even if it is just looking at ads is good for a morale boost.

I've been made redundant three times. First time I was 17 and had to leave there and then. Second time more than half the company were laid off, but we had to come into work every day for five months (and do nothing) if we wanted our redundancy money. I'd been there 12 years, so I wasn't giving that up lightly. Third time was due to office relocation, I'd only been with the company a year. Now I have four part time jobs, which make up a whole weeks work. I think things are OK, but you never know.

Andi, I presume you are referring to Watford General...... know it and the area very, very well. I used to spend a lot of time next door..... as well as countless pubs of course..... ahhh those were the days.......

Thank you, that's very kind. He had been in good health for his age (87) but collapsed quite suddenly Sunday morning and I guess really his body had had enough.

    Getting old is a b----r, isn't it?

Yes James, beloved Watford General. Never knew much of the pubs actually IN Watford; used to take the opportunity to get out to one of the prettier villages, Bovingdon being a favourite.

    Wow,
    It's the place to be...........(from)

Andi sorry to hear your news, I remeber only too well the amount of paperwork etc. from when I lost ,my mum last year.
But, The Chinese on Queensway long since gone, replaced by aTurkish eatery (looks a bit dodgey, never been in there)

The Hospital has grown to massive proportions over the past 10 years or so - this must be the reason they are closing it down bit by bit, A & E already moved to Watford.

Thunderclap: Woodhall Farm is still there, probably grown, it was a nice area when it was new but now has a bit of a reputation.

    Oh well,
    Best go start dinner

Wow, that must have been a shock!! I hope you are coping as best anyone can under the circumstances.......

I'm afraid so Andi, unfortunately there nothing we can do to prevent the advances of father time......

  • Comment number 84.

Andi, we used to go all over the place in search of the "good pint".....

  • Comment number 85.

    Astounding Andi,

There was one thst was considered a little 'posh' The China Garden, it had a tree (not real) growing through the middle of it.

Then there's another almost opposite what used to be the Cinema, think it's called the Lotus Garden, but it's changed hands lots of times.

I know the area in Watford near the Hospital, lived in a road called Mildred Ave for a few years.

Thanks James, I'm okay at the moment. Seem to have the phone glued to my ear all day though.

Checked at work and I get a statutory 2 DAYS Compassionate leave. As I work 13 hour nights, that's a night and a bit, apparently. I can take 'unpaid leave' if I want.

I wouldn't be so angry but I KNOW another person on the same grade as me who took 2 weeks last year when her dog died. I almost shopped her at the time but felt dishonourable about it. Now... I wonder.

    James,
There still are a couple of really nice 'old' pubs to be found within staggering distance.

unfortunately, lots of the type where they check you have the right hair gel etc. and you can't hear yourself speak if you know what I mean.
(oh boy I sound like a right oldie)

Andi, my heart goes out to you. My dear dad died last year. My mam and brother couldn't cope at all so it fell to me to organise everything. I was like a robot, went into overdrive, acted rather inappropriately at times (like finding out the funeral director went to the same junior school as me and keeping interrupting him with "Do you remember Mrs so and so?").

The funeral day was totally surreal and more like a family party. Mother flushed her hearing aid down the loo. I did, somehow, manage to give the speech at the church.

The actual fact of his not being here any more didn't begin to hit me until much, much later.

Try and find some time to relax, watch telly, have a glass of wine, whatever gets you through.

    Take care.

Mildred Avenue? Up by the Ricky Road?

    NO WAY????!!!!!

I rented a place on Princes while I did my midwifery for a year. Mildred was dead posh compared to Princes; semis compared to terraces.

Nicki, I know Mildred Ave. I lived on Hampermill Lane for a long time.......

Andi...... wow, a night and a bit does sound more like barely-compassionate leave....... Might be worth speaking to your boss or HR to see if it can be extended. If you don't ask, you don't get......

That's inhuman. Ring in sick and take as long as you need.

nicki..... I know exactly what you mean. Didn't like those places much then, even less now. You just can't get a good pint in places where you can't hear yourself think.......

    Hi boleyngirl,

thanks, yes, it is a completely surreal period of anyone's life. My Mother died a few years ago so I've been through it before but then my brother was 'happy' to take a back seat but this time....

I have taken your instructions and made a nice Scotch and water, purely medicinal, you understand.

    Hi James,

Yes, I intend to but (as usual) no one was available in HR today. All those 3 hour lunches must be so exhausting!! I often wonder how those administrators would cope with some REAL work on one of my shifts....

I was really looking forward to my break on LI too.... and the opportunity to do some serious fabric shopping in all the amazing quilt stores out there. Oh well.... I consider it postponed and not cancelled.

How's the take on the whirlwind Obama in your neck of the woods?

Can I ask a small favour? Rather than me go on about my situation here, would anyone who has experience with anti-depressants mind contacting me on facebook? I need all the advice/help that I can get.
