Got To Admit It's Getting Better, Better All The Time. . .

Chris Evans | 16:19 UK time, Wednesday, 13 January 2010

Today's show was the first show since D Day where I felt I was in the moment. I remembered to breathe and everything.

Had a very funny conversation with Terry's producer Barrowlands last night. Having witnessed what has gone on this week with our new show and time slot, he's now thinking about Terry's new show and how that's gonna take time to "bed in". It hadn't occurred to me that Terry's gonna be nervous as well when he returns in February, with his spankingly fabulous Sunday morning show.

This really is a strange business. We put ourselves up for judgement every day and then wonder how come we all end up half mad or worse. Ha ha ! If I only realised a few years ago what I realise now, and learnt not to fret about it... But then again if I had have done, I wouldn't be here having the best time of my life now would I?

In other news, Johnny and I have just finished recording the first of our weekly sporting challenges for the Friday Brekkie show and I honestly ache all over. . . can't wait for tomorrow - ouch !

See you on the radio.

Hi First time blogger here been reading it for a few years now as have been a big fan of drivetime since it started so thought I would join in and give my views on the show.

I love the new show finally something fun and lively to listen to in the morning before hand it was either Radio 1 or if that got too annoying commercial radio. I couldn’t listen to Terry and Johnny Walker on the drive to work they would have had me asleep at the wheel.

Isn’t it great that it is now a family show and kids are listening and getting involved these oldies who in some reviews I have read have said there is too much children participation should hang their heads in shame while listening to quiet time on Radio 3 or 4.

The talking over the songs is an intresting issue but surely it’s a catch 22 they are trying to fit in a lot of music so when else will Chris get time to read the texts and emails out he has to try and buy himself some time or do they drop a few songs and then people will complain there is not enough music.

I am feeling sorry for Johnny Saunders he seems to be getting a hard time. All the other breakfast shows I listen to have a sports section and presenter although it is mainly added on at the end of the news (maybe worth a thought). Johnny used to make drivetime for me and the best bit was when just before the top tenuous Chris and him had a bit of banter it some days it was classic stuff and hopefully given time this will grow on the breakfast shows.

I do feel on the breakfast show there is a lot less banter with the team which is disappointing but I suppose it’s down to time and making sure they get all the music played. However there does seem to be a bit more on shows 2&3 after the extra phone in was dropped. Personally I would be happy with a few less songs and more banter but I guess this would cause WW3 with some of the listeners.

Keep up the good work Chris and I am sure in time there will be something for everyone. It’s great to see radio 2 trying to be more up to date not just with the breakfast show but with other shows such as Jonathan Ross, Alan Carr, Dermot O’Leary et

    Obviously not!!

Johnny seems to have calmed down a bit, thank goodness - my blood pressure was rising too high too early in the day!

Great to hear Moira; reminds me of the good old days of watching her on ´óÏó´«Ã½ telly news.

  • Comment number 5.

CLP - how do you do a sporting challenge for the radio???? Do you have a separate commentator?

What time will it be on on Friday?

    mtd ffb xxx

  • Comment number 6.

Phils right, a few less songs and a bit more banter would be great. After all, most of us tune in for Mr E and the team and not the music which is available via most good cd players !!!!

However, I would not want a radio 1 show where Moyles rambles on, shouts and bullies his way through the morning with the same 5 songs off a rubbish playlist. Thank god i can switch that off now !!!!!

  • Comment number 7.

Yes Chris, it was noticeable that you were much more comfortable and dear Johnny was a bit less manic, bless him.

Nice to see new people on the blog making sensible comments. Welcome, and please stay.

Hello CLP, the team and other Bloggers.

Only my second blog. Monday was my first. Infact, I'm so new to blogging I forgot to blog yesterday! Hopefully I will be as quick at learning as you obviously are Chris!

Must admit, for me the show is great and I agree, it's getting better and better. Before, the radio alarm going off was just a rude interruption to my sleep, now I look forward to 7am!

I don't understand the people who have gone out of their way just to stick the knife in, as you mentioned, there's nothing you can do about that. It seems that they still treat you like "Marmite" and can't adjust to the fact that you're not Sir Tel!

All in all though, it seems that the new show is going down very well. I am also sure that you will win over a lot of the doubting Thomas'. After all, you manged to achieve the seemingly impossible on Drivetime, and that was to win over my Old Man!

Keep up the good work! Looking forward to the sporting challenge on Friday.

    Cheers,

    IM

Chris, I have an awful feeling that this blog is going to drive you insane over the coming weeks!!

You see, contrary to MikeyMikey and Phil, I personally prefer a bit less chat and a bit more music in the morning!

But ultimately, I think it's just like that pair of new slippers - doesn't feel quite right at first, but given time you wouldn't want to change them for anything!

  • Comment number 10.

My word my first post and some says I am right! All downhill from now then.

I just think back to the banter there used to be with Sally, Foxy, Johnny etc and would like a bit more of that.

  • Comment number 11.

Too late, phil, DP already disagrees with us. Thank god I dont have Chris's job of trying to please everyone although the money would come in handy !!!!

  • Comment number 12.

    Big chief CLP,

You're probably sick to death, up to your neck and completely p'd off to the gills with our moaning but I have to say that you're already light years ahead from Monday . . .

    Although . . . .

the magic half-hour after 8 is a mish-mash, in my humble opinion - see that HEAD TO HEAD quiz with Jonny & Moira - nice idea but the stories and subject is below our intel. somewhat - leave that sort of thing to Moylesy or the commercials . . . we want intelligient banter - light-hearted but not tabloid . . .

Sorry, hope this helps - I really hate being critical - I aint no expert . . .

PS Jonny has come on leaps and bounds - no more shouting - - too early for the coffin - dodgers!!!!

    Afternoon CLP

I now have to time my morning regime around the Breakfast Show, so in and out of the shower by 7.03 if I can get out of bed in time, putting the slap on is no problem but have to time the Boeing 757 hair-dryer shennanigans for when there's music being played, so as not to miss any banter.

Agree that the CLP/Johnnie banter is gold. And long may it continue.

    Happy Hump Day.

I think that banter will be back as soon as the team get to know each other better - you know how it is, I think this team are still in the 'forming' stage, give it a month or so and they will be 'performing' like gooduns...

Welcome again to the new bloggers.

  • Comment number 18.

I actually think that the mixture of music and banter is about right; it must be a very hard job in the mornings to balance the two as time is important to people in the mornings in a way that is different to the evenings (pressure to get to work, children to school, etc).

By the way, I have both original and vegetarian suet in my kitchen cupboard, but no lobster bisque!

The general consensus seems to be Jonny deserves a pat on the back :)

Ah Christoff. But if we knew then what we know now, we'd 'ave binned it because we knew better.

I'm guessin' yous are like me an' knew EVERYthin' when yous were 20.

Me; 10 years ago I'd a never guessed I'd be doin' what I'm doin' now, an' thanks be to jayzus for that. Because I wouldn't 'ave attempted what I've done since, and my life would have bin' the poorer for it.

Mind you. I knew this mornin' that if I didn't get off me lazy bum an' get packed I'd be runnin' round tonight like a blue-a**ed fly.

    Got that much right.

You're still shouting, Chris. Relax a bit, drop the word rate just a little and you'll come across as much warmer. The problem with having learned from the great Timmy (I worked with him at Centre Radio in Leicester) is that you've put too much adrenaline into your delivery. We know from your blog that you're a warm, literate human being underneath the shiny exterior - let it come through.

Reduce the clutter a bit, too - there's some good stuff coming in on the email and texts. Make room for it, it feels more like a conversation then. Modern, immediate communications and live radio were just meant for each other!

    Hello Again

Know what you mean about the morning routine. I'm having to work out all the new timings!

Chris, Really enjoyed the show today, your being more relaxed came across so clearly.

I am definately smiling more in the morning and the energy levels are up in our house

Re people posting purely negative comments, I have just been onto the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Food message boards for the Hairy Bikers as a recipe they featured on the show has gone missing. There are an equivelent number of people posting on there saying " I don't like the Hairy Bikers and I watched the Hairy Bikers Programme and didn't like it!"

There is usually a clue in the title of a show and if you don't like the person in it, don't watch.

Recipe still missing btw! It seems the nice lady who gave it to SI & Dave may have been from Norfolk!!

  • Comment number 25.

Hello, not blogged in ages, lurk now and then.

First, can I just say to Chris and the team, in true "Young Mr Grace" style - "YOU'RE ALL DOING VERY WELL". In these days of instant feedback and, inevitably, judgement, everybody is going to have an opinion on everything. In the old days you'd have had to wait for the ratings figures! Anyway, it's all fine by me, I think you know what you're doing; I'm enjoying drivetime also, very much, Simon has a lovely voice.

I do think it is fantastic to see so many new people blogging, it's as if new life has been breathed into it. And the odd healthy difference of opinion never hurts.

Good luck with your new life Chezza, if my memory serves me correctly you will now have to learn ballroom dancing. Backwards in high shoes.

Hello to all me old mates, with a particular mensh for Tinsel - saw you around the other day, hope all well with you tiddly pom (bet you're lurking now and then).

  • Comment number 53.

Chris - no problem with choice of music - you're offering a wide coverage and I think you and your producer are really trying to give the established listeners what they want. Starting off with the Beatles no problem there.
But just 'cos I'm writing on this blog does not mean I am your number one fan - no siree! You're just a bit over the top for me, especially when driving to work. That's not to say your style of presenting is bad, but it's just not right for this time of the morning. Maybe go a little slower - less exuberance, a bit more music. I have to say I do not like all the phone ins etc - I'm just not interested in what some woman happens to be wearing etc or listening to emails that have been sent in by someone I do not know or never likely to either. The show is just a carbon copy of the drivetime show. Please have a rethink in certain areas before I retune. Rant over - for now anyway

You are just great at this time in the morning. I think it is unfair to say this is drivetime at breakfast, This is not the case.

And we have an extended One show because we've had a bit of snow! Yes, it's been snowing. Yes, it's icy outside. Yes, you have to take care if you're going out. But can the media please stop repeating the same information over and over and over. I think we've got the message now, thank you.

Anyone from Middlesbrough way, what's it doing/forecast - we'resupposed to be up there for a suit fitting this weekend!

For Mr JG obviously, not me.....

    Evening All,

Boleyngirl - Welcome back and the dance lessons have been requested. Have "taught" Deevs the waltz in the kitchen and she only trod on my toe twice - result!
Clodagh - You CANNOT be almost 55 - what you takin'?
Callie - My old boss used to say that - he was the best boss I ever had and he was called Nick! He used to refer to some staff as IRKS - that's Individuals Respected for their Knowledge and Skills!
Drive back from work was "fun" after I had spent 10 minutes digging myself out of the work's car park - Thanks for rear wheel drive Mercedes...and then a nice sideways slide down the hill to ChezNic...
Asked my mother, aged 75, what she thought of Chris' show and she said he talks too fast and not my generation - she loved STW so another listener lost - bu hey ho - you can't please all the people all of the time - Gordon Brown take note. Still, Chris will gain listeners from Radio 1, so it will even itself out and at least Chris is inclusive, unlike STW who, if you weren't "in the TOG club" I felt was a bit exclusive at times (much as I liked him)
Loving Moira - velvet voice and great giggle.

Chris: brilliant show as ever. i am currently reading your autobiography which i am loving. last night i read the bit about you losing your job at picadilly following comments on an elderly cat. When i heard you talking about Dennis the 20year old border terrier this morning i thought NOOOO, not in the first week!!!!!! i'm guessing it was more the comment about eating the cat rather than the fact that the age conversion doesnt quite work!!!
hope the breakfast show works out well for you and you stay there for many years to come

Hi first time here. Well done Chris, what a talent you are and your crew of course. The 7.00 am start is ideal for me, so i'm sure when all this 'white stuff' has gone my journey to work will be something to look forward to, having the benefit of great company from Radio 2. Perhaps I will start work with a smile on my face - now that'll be a first!

    Afternoon / Evening all,

Thumbs up for the new show from me.

Just been having a little lurk lately, but it's nice to see so many new people. There's always going to be different opinions on anything that's new or different to what has been before. World would be a boring place if we all thought the same about stuff though, wouldn't it?! At the risk of offending some people (which is not my intention at all, I am really really really not a confrontational person) perhaps more of a discussion approach rather than an outright negative approach to expressing opinions might be better received and acted on? That said, I am glad the positivity is starting to shine though again, this blog has (to me, anyway) mostly seemed such a positive place, be it for reassurance, advice, company or comfort from other bloggers, and also as a positive "realworld" link into Chris's show. Just my thoughts and feel free to ignore me entirely if you wish.

PS you wouldn't believe how many times I've re written that to make the words say what I mean. I'm generally not good at that, so I am afraid it will be taken the wrong way!

Yep. Superb show today. It just gets better
    Well done, Chris!!

As to the Chris Evans Autobiography, I enjoyed that very much. I read it out of sequence, reading the earlier chapters last. A very entertaining read.
Chris, if you read these comments- back when you were on Radio 1 I just read about your antics & thought, "What a plonker!"

When your show started on Radio 2 I thought, I'll give it a listen, but I was pretty dubious. By the end of the first show, I was won over.
I have enjoyed your Drivetime shows- the bits I've heard of them- and by Day 3 of the Breakfast show i think you really had it down just right.
    Well done & good luck.
One word of criticism- the other day I heard you shout "Key Change!" in the middle of a song. I recall Key Change Weddnesdays, & on a coupl,e of ocasions the shouting of "Key Change!" during the songs had my head rattled on my journey home!!! So, not too much of that, please!!
Anyway, Good Luck. I know you will do a great job :)

    Annie the innocent!!! Bless.

I am waiting for my third incident and hope it will be as insignificant as my two so far.

Slid Mr B's car in to a lamp post reversing out from hairdresssers - no damage
One of my freezers conked - not the one with the meat in. Pasties? quiches? ones I made earlier? spring rolls anyone?

enjoyed the show again today - heard more of it as was driving to work! Still can't see the point of Hello Goodbye but I do have to admit it made me laugh a lot today!! so maybe something silly and totally pointless is a good thing!! At least I think so!!

Glad our snow has all gone now - good when it comes but good when it goes too isn't it? Bit like visitors!! In fact it was quite lovely down here today - 9 degrees according to the car on the way home, bit of sun, positively Mediterranean (or subterranean as Mr CG's granny used to say!!).

Annie - I've no idea about front/rear wheel drive either!! your "I just drive them" comment is exactly my way of thinking!! Although i do now know where to put the petrol and the washer fluid!
