It's Nice To Be Important But It's Important To Be - Near A Kettle!

Chris Evans | 10:47 UK time, Thursday, 25 February 2010

Title of today's show.

A kettle, be it paint splattered in a builder's cabin, or bubbling away in the breakfast room of a Blackpool boarding house - to me - is one of the most welcoming sights a human being can behold.

Especially yesterday, when Jonny and myself were freezing our respective bits off at a water skiing lake near Heathrow for most of the day.

Honestly, in between "goes" I sat in the sauna, which is bizarrely but thankfully situated on the end of the jetty, in full wet suit with a cup of tea ! And I remained there until the last possible minute I could, before being called to film again.

I have experienced many wide and varied things in the course of my life, but I never imagined I would ever have a cup of tea in a sauna and enjoy every mouthful.

Hot drinks in saunas, I'm still getting my head around it.

Click here to watch the video of our exploits - enjoy.

Hi Chris, you two are brave going in that cold water. I will watch the video and see how you got on. How are Tash and Noah doing. Is she still getting the new kitchen.

  • Comment number 2.

    Morning Chris

I did laugh this morning when you were relaying the wet suit tale to us over the airwaves - and agree - how are you supposed to know the zip goes at the back? If I put my cardi on with the zip or buttons at the back I'd be locked up!

Off out shortly, finding my locations for 2 interviews tomorrow.

    Wish me luck!

    Morning Chris,

Tea in a sauna is bizarre, admittedly but water skiing in February is almost as bizarre, so, maybe, tea in a sauna is not as bizarre after all.
We don't have a kettle at work but a large urn with constant boiling water in it, which is great. Well it was great until this morning, when the main fuse blew and 60 people couldn't get a hot drink for an hour..and we don't have a sauna either btw...
Loved the choice of music in today's show too. Keep on raising the standard Sir..

Hiya Chris, can't wait to see the video. I have a feeling that you and Jonny are going above and beyond the call of duty with these Sporting Challenges!

As for tea: I drink three cups a day, and my lovely husband always brings me the best cup of the day, just in time for the kids coming on the show to say what they are doing "for the first time today"!

The show is just getting better and better - what will we do without you when you are on holiday?!

    Morning all, hope you're well?

Just nipping in to say hi, don't really have the tiem to regularly blog anymore but do try and read CXlp's musings each day.
Fully agree re the kettle, I think that 'click' as it's just boiled, especially first thing in the morning is one of life's greatest sounds.
#1 son has first ever football training today, he was all kitted out ready this morning with his bag, can't wait to collect him after nad hear all about it.
    Enjoy your weekend everyone

Hi Chrissie, hope you're well up there?

  • Comment number 9.

    Morning all!!
Chris - if you lived round here you would be in no doubt about which way round to put on a wetsuit!! that's why it has that big long taggy thing attached to the zip, so you can pull up the zip over your shoulder!! also if you used it for surfing it would chafe something terrible lying on a board with the zip at the front!!

Can I just use the wonderful forum that is this blog to say how much I have enjoyed this week's mystery guests?! i love the way they now seem to relate to "topical discussions" from the week. This morning's chat with the gorgeous Raymond was fantastic - I must have looked totally daft driving to work grinning like that!!

Last day of work for me this week so my weekend starts 5 pm today - hooray!!

Since the Bye Bye Drivetime (thank you for taking the time to talk to me by the way...arnchoo LUVVERLEY!!!) I've bin proper laid up, and now hopefully getting better, and I can listen to more as I really enjoyed waking up with you this morning...ahem.

Anyhoo, hallo to everyone else, thank you for your cards and messages, and the Sett is moving next Thursday.

Gotta go now, as explained, am at work, so should be working...see you all later...

Hi Gingembre: thanks, everything is ok North of the Border, except that I have just had a major coughing fit which has lasted for about 15 mins! Methinks the cold that has been lurking around me for the last few days has finally arrived! Hope you are ok.

Do my eyes deceive me? Hazel Love, as I live and breathe! Hazel: welcome back, just fabulous to see you! I had no idea the Sett was moving, but you should receive my card before next Thursday!

Raining cats and dogs here in Ayrshire, but hopefully that will wash away the huge snow drifts.

Have a good day, and weekend everybody.

Hi Gail - look forward to meeting you on Saturday. My last day at work until Tuesday as well hurrah.

CLP - loved the music choices this morning (well between 7.05 and 8.15 when I was listening anyway). Also loved the singing of Love Me Tender to the Archers theme tune - another project for the bloggers to muse over today methinks...

    Hi guys,

I'm a bit of a newby to this malarkey this being my second post. Can't remember when my first post was or what it was about - the excitement must have been too great.

Anyhoo, I've been reading the blog for a few days now but never have time to compose a smart and witty reply. I had one all sorted out on my drive into work this morning and now my blimmin' mind has gone blank.

Just thought of this - is it just me or has anyone else noticed that the ending to zippedy doo dah at the start of the show sounds like it is being sung by dear old Jonny 'Sports' Saunders, with quite a flourish I may add? Gawd love him - Chris can be so harsh with the poor boy.

In case I don't make it back any time soon - due to lack of anything interesting / witty to say rather than being too busy - I hope you all have a fab time at the 'meet' this weekend - sounds like loads of fun.

    Hi everyone!

Tea in a sauna does sound bizarre but so does water skiing in Feb, as Nic said earlier! I did laugh over the wet suit - bless.

Hi Hazel - I knew a regular from my lurking days was missing! Hope all is well with you (other than the water situation).

Last day at work for me this week as well! Tomorrow day will be primping and prettyfying (?) then off to Jamies Bar with knees a-trembling and flutterbyes in the tummy.

Mummy-Jay - if you are there - I am travelling in from SE London on the delightful Dartford line. If that is anywhere near your part of SE London, contact me on FB and we can hook up and go to the bar together.

    Hi Chris,

Agree with you totally, tea is the best drink of the day. Never been a coffee person, can't understand all the fuss over these designer coffees, totally overrated in my opinion. Am listening to your show on iplayer, you were so funny talking about putting on the wet suit. Looking forward to seeing the video later.
Then you tap into nostagia talking about Denim, Brut and Old Spice. Old Spice always reminds me of my late Dad. I remember Smitty and Charlie- awful stuff- but as a young teenager I thought it was the bees knees!

    Quiet here today...........

    Dear Debs-not-here:

Oooooh! Sounds lovely! As luck would have it, Mary, Hazel and I are planning to be in Glasgow city centre on the Sunday after the Meet! Wouldn't it be HILARIOUS if we all ended up in the same place?!

I'm not here either Debs - far too much work to do if I'm outa here tomorrow morning London bound. But heaven and earth is going to be moved to visit Glasgow and stay over to the Sunday !!

This is my first every post so wish me luck.

First of all Chris I wanted to say how delighted I was to read yesterday's blog, you will feel amazing once you have got your Nutrition right. Yes you do eat need to eat reguarly, I am sure Ian Marber will have you feeling healthier than you have ever felt before. As a Nutritional Therapist I delight in how simple changes can have such a big impact on my clients.

With regards the tea in the sauna, I have a suggestion for you and Natasha - once the kitchen is done, fit yourself a steam room (well get someone to do it for you), with speakers, you can then listen to Radio 2, drink tea, steam and chat - wonderful.

Thanks for the show - Getting up at 7am is now a real possibility for me.

    4) Weekend afternoons

Billie, we'll just have to wait and see!!

D'you know, sometimes FB doesn't open and the only way I can get on to it is to open an FB photo I have accessed and then go to my home page from there.

the photo just happens to be Errol's fab photo of CLP and lots of happy bloggers.

It always makes me smile when I see it - even though I'm having problems accessing the site I want

Every cloud has a silver lining eh

    Seza xx

PS Hazel, glad to see you are feeling a bit better. Take it easy and hope your move goes ok.

Have just watched the Water Ski Challenge Video!

Well, you can't say those boys aren't giving it their all, but this video made me laugh. Not quite as funny as the Ice Hockey (What could be?) but Chris's face as he was being splashed with the very cold looking water is a picture!

Which has given me a brilliant (I think) idea

    The Sporting Challenge Calendar!

All proceeds to Children in Need of course

I vote the Jonny shoulder charge for the first picture!

Any clever tweeters want to send that to Chris?

    I'll order one now!

Thanks CSN, although for this holiday I can't take much credit, Mr JG took most of them, and certainly the ones from the "top"!!

    I'm still not here.

If I was, I'd tell you I'd tweeted Seza's idea to CLP (and credited her accordingly). Except I'm not, so know nothing about any ideas about anything.

I won't be back later to tell you anything he may not have said.

  • Comment number 96.

U-C. As you aren't here and you didn't tweet my idea to CLP I won't thank you very much! xx

When you are here, if you could do that, I'll be very grateful

    Cheers

Made it back - it was pretty scary but I put the rubber gloves on, gritted my teeth and went for it. Found about a million socks under her bed and the oyster card she 'lost' and I had to pay a tenner to replace - told her I'm taking it out of her pocket money.

Hi Loli - I take it your not round this way anymore, I'm in Blackfen but hubby insists it's Sidcup!
