Arise Mel And Sue

Chris Evans | 11:47 UK time, Wednesday, 25 August 2010

I could watch Mel and Sue forever on telly. They just have the perfect delivery and were delivering perfectly on our house once again last night, as it was time for The Great British Bake Off episode 2.

This meant the whole of the country had to sit through a full half hour of biscuit making, without reaching for the biscuit tin - or not !

We saw the factory that can make up to ten million biccies a day; we saw antique biccie that Sir Ranulph Fiennes bought at auction for four grand - that was the last ration of Scott of The Antarctic; and we saw the raw mixture for home made biccies. Simply - butter, flour and sugar. You want them crispier - add MORE sugar. You want them softer, like a cookie? Add honey to the mix.

Why the Great British Bake Off doesn't get more viewers than X Factor - is something I will never be able to get my head around.

When the show was over by the way, you could press the red button for Paul Hollywood's scone recipe. I believe you still can - be careful out there.

Although M&S cheese scones are to literally die for.

Off now to purchase flour etc.....

    Have a good day peeps.

Unfortunately nobody in my household could stay away from the biscuit tin, especially when we hit digestives and then shortbread - game over.

    Have a lovely day all

12.16. That'll be Aaaaaaaaaafternoon all, Mikey.

Chris, I noticed yesterday you said that it would be ´óÏó´«Ã½2 all the way. Coast, Baking, et al. Not giving up on The One Show already are we? ;0)

  • Comment number 4.

I agree CLP. Great British Bake Off last night was really good. Nothing like a nice bit of shortbread.

    Chrissie,
Glad the plumber said it was the seal around the bath rather than something more serios. That is quite a common problem especially with the modern baths that "flex" a little.

    Baggy,
Just saw your post from yesterday. Don't I count as one of the men then? ;-)

Still trying to catch up with work after the trip. Hope everyone is well.

    Hello CLP & Everone.

You're absolutely right Chris there are so many good shows on television. I'm ashamed to say that I did watch the X Factor and didn't watch The Great British Bake Off. I'll change my ways immediately but I am proud to say that I didn't watch Big Brother.

In fact, I think I'll not only watch The Great British Bake Off but I'll go into the kitchen and make some of those biccies like I used to. I remember the school domestic science day when I would proudly walk home carrying that tin of rock buns, etc. My family would eagerly await my latest creation.

    PS Weather improving a bit!

Morning all. Chris, I have loved Mel and Sue since they were gawky youngsters feeling their way on Light Lunch. I used to video it and watch it when I got in from work. Is the bake off programme made by the same people who do The Restaurant? Even though it's filmed largely in a tent it has the same lovely quality to the way it looks.

It's lashing it down here. I'm not ready for Autumn quite yet.

    Love Barmy xx

Hi folks, new boy John here! The bake off!!!! My daughter Laura is in love BIG TIME with Paul Hollywood.....we even watched the scone making bit at the end of the programme. At present she's 27 going on 16! Chris, can you arrange a meet? We are talking 'in love'. She is a fellow lecturer, like me her dad, so we're talking pretty level headed.....hm!....that is debatable I suppose. So if anyone out there is in the know with repsect to signed photos.........or can arrange for Paul to be stranded on a desert island then get Laura flown over and dropped off to rescue him......but not straight away, I'd be obliged!

Hope you're all having a good one?

Whatta Beautiful Day For Feeling Beautiful & INDEED Lo-oking Beautiful....

    Afternoon CLP & ALL...

Bingo Star 'ere... Coming To You From Blennerhasset, NW Cumbria, UK...

CLP - A agree Mel & Sue 'ave immense delivery... so much so even Royal Mail are reduced only to nothing but jealousy!!!!!!!!!

And a know exactly 'ow they feel!!!!!!!!

CLP ave gotta problem, am feeling worried/ concerned about yer welfare CLP, especially what with you being one of the Uk's premier DJ's/ TV Presenters - And am not saying this ter crawl or INDEED in a sickening sycophantic way.... no... ter be frank am speaking me mind 'er as a do woory about you CLP!!!! Ok some say am ouuta me mind... but that's another story & VERY much one a don't wanter go inter now!!!!!!!
What am concerned about the logistical implications of yer gig in a field in Cornwall & then yer getting back ter London... and not getting beck ter London on any old day... no this is Friday... and not any old Friday... but the one before the UK August Bank Holiday..... the time of year when we celebrate the delight of being in about the only part of Europe where yer can go for a day out & get totally soaked in the summer!!!!!!!
But me main worry is 'ow are yer gonna get back ter London!!!!!

Now a know yer a mean of showbizz & the most glamerous & showbizz way is by 'elicopter..... but yerv gotta think of the eco crudentials CLP!!!!!!!
Plus where are yer gonna land a chopper next to The One Show tv studios in central London?????

Then there's the option... be driven!!!!!
But NOT on a August bank 'oliday.... up the A30... believe me yer do NOT wanter be on the A30 at the end of August... then the M5, the M4 around Bristol... and these are not even the worse bits... yerv still got the M25/ M4 area of utter madness & delusion/ illusion that yer will be going faster than anything over 10mph on a motorway!!!!!!!
Ask Sally Boaz & The Bowls if yer don't believe me!!!!!!
Ok so this could be a firm case were a offer you my driving services & one of the rare cases when a get me special flashing blue light that a keep 'idden in me boot & risk all!!!!! (that's me car not me Doc Martins!!!)
When a say risk all a mean... me licence & freedom... don't mean risk crashing as am a very advanced/ experienced driver.... not that am being egotistical... just driving with responsibilty & niceness!!!!!!!!!
But the problem 'ere is 'aving a TOP celebrity in the back of me smoking Rover diesel.... And 'aving flashing blue lights on me roof.... errr flashing.... that shouldn't be there... the last thing a wanter do is attract any attention from the motorway smokies - know what am sayin'!!!!!!!

So my only advice is.... the train wins again CLP... as it does with most things in life... not just career wise (in my case!!!).

My advice CLP.... There's no train from Looe (nearest station ter Talland Bay) until 10.34!!!!!!!
So my advice: getta lift in a car at 09.30 on the dot ter nearby Liskeard station (9.25miles) & then my advice: yer want ter get the 10.15 Intercity Express bound for London Paddington!!!!!!!
My advice: yer can even go first class & ave a meal.... and a kip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Arriving Paddington at 13.44... My advice: you'll be completely stress free & in total safety with still over 5 'ours until The One Show gig kicks off!!!!!!!!!!!

The resutling outcome will be that your delivery will be as sharp as Mel & Kim's and come 19.31 Friday.... Adrain Chiles will be even angrier than this Friday after the better incident!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad ter 'elp CLP.... am glad ter 'elp... that's the kind of person a am!!!!!!!!

    Bye!

  • Comment number 12.

Bingo - I thought about you this morning, the train was emptied and left standing on the platform with the driver door open - just could imangine you jumping in and taking it for a spin!!!!!!

  • Comment number 13.

I think Thought for the day was so true Chris. The Internet does rather act as a sort of Hide and Seek game for some I am sure of that.
For others is simply a matter of keeping in touch with long distance friends or relatives.

However I have never quite understood Social Networking sites where people
add strangers they have never met just to boost the number of friends they have.

If I am on a train I am hardly going to approach my fellow passengers asking them for their email addys poking them to play scrabble.

    I prefer Hide and seek.

  • Comment number 14.

Some of us have been both poked and asked to play scrabble on a train, Mrs P. Not usually at the same time though.

  • Comment number 16.

Bingo, are you frogetting the magic of television ???
Somehow they will get CLP to London or maybe they will bring the show to him or he might fly from nearby airport to City airport ??? Or maybe and only just maybe ...... teleportation ???

Paul - lost track of time, could have sworn it was still morning. Forgive my 15 minute delay?

And on that note.... Afteeeeeernnnooooon, good evening and good night allll.

Thank you for your kind wishes, Marjie, Annie, Seza, MC, AF, CG, Chrissie, and AS

My jawbone is aching and mouth is very sore today, so think it will be a few days before I can tell if what i've had done has solved the problem.

Boiled eggs and soldiers for lunch.

Cold and very wet here, so heating on and afternoon curled up on the sofa with Holly and a good book!

Miss P, lovely to see you.

  • Comment number 23.

Cheers Maddymoon......I haven't seen her like this since she saw George Michael on tele for the first time. Hm! Perhaps she needs to get out more!

She who must be obeyed and I were having a good old giggle over it. Luckily enough Laura is blessed with a sense of humour, but if she ever met Paul we'd never hear the last.

Oh well off home....to hear more about PAUL! I bet she'll even get next years students hooked on him, poor devils! Personally I can't see the fascination, but then again..............

Chris, haven't seen that - must have a look as I love baking.

Now, folks, I need help here. Picked up satnav from youngests (it's mine but I never see it!) and the thingy in my car isn't working!!! Am now really stressed because I need to get to Ardrossan tomorrow very early. Anyone any idea how long the battery lasts in these things? The journey is about 2 hours.

  • Comment number 34.

    Annie,

Does your sat nav show how many "bars" of charge you have left, similar to your mobile phone ??? Otherwise, i'd set off early and just drive very fast .

    evening all, hope you're well?

MrsW and eldest were watching the Mel & Sue bake-off, very good too. Made a pleasant change from some of the other cookery rabble doing the rounds at the mo'

Spent today at an African adventure zoo thingy (trying hard not to name drop there and get moderated) with MrsW,the kids and my folks. Had a lovely day too despite car failing on me on way home - well the battery died to be precise but a great man in a van with 3 letters on the side helped and was brilliant (other vans with letters available), 3 sleeps 'til France and Spurs on tv tonight, come on the lilywhites (will do ironing whilst watching).

Hope you're all ticker-tee-boo out there tonight

  • Comment number 37.

Well Gingembre!!! If I'd known you were doing the ironing I'd have bunged mine your way. Have only done what's absolutely necessary to go in the case for Arran tomorrow - if I ever get there, given that no-one can tell me how long my satnav battery will last.

    xxxx

  • Comment number 38.

    Annie,

Do you have a charger that you can use in the house ??? My sat nav is a death trap, and tells me to turn round in the middle of the motorway. Funny how my friend doesn't want it back and insists i keep it . It has caused more rows and i cant get it to work properly. Last time, i slung it on the back in temper, and all the way to London this little voice in the back kept telling me about speed cameras , for four hours non stop.

    MC xx

  • Comment number 39.

    Hi Gingembre,

Good to see you , glad you got your car fixed, and had an enjoyable day.
How you fixed for giving Annie a lift tomorrow ?

    Take care,

    MC xx

  • Comment number 40.

MC, have only used the satnav once and it was fabby (not in this car I may add)

Have left it with son-in-law - he owes me big time - so hopefully it'll be fully charged in the morning.

Gingembre - now that sounds like a plan! Only 2 hrs - Dunfermline to Ardrossan - the rest of the day's your own.

It's Friday in my world today, need to get a couple of cards tomorrow: one for my cousins daughter who acheived stellar results in her GCSEs, and one for my wee Goddaughter who is 2 on Tuesday. I might have another wee wander round the festival too.

Actually I had this fantastic idea. I teach all subjects to special needs adults, so I thought that perhaps I could tell them about you all and put down some of their comments here, especially as I often replay the morning show when we're doing art and craft and cooking. It'll be great for communication and I am sure that you will all be there on occasion to welcome them aboard. We can only try....and it might encourage some of them to use the 'puter and blog too. What are peoples thoughts?

Guys I've thought long and hard about posting this evening. But I feel I have to do this, and so with apologies to the 'newbies', who may not be familiar with what I'm about to tell you, here goes.

I haven't posted for a little while because I've had some profoundly sad news. My lovely, big daft eejit friend, Damian, the GBF, has passed away.

I'm not going to go into any details; I shall never do that because that's not for here. But since the said GBF was such a big part of my life, and hence my bringing him to all of you, I think it's right I tell you.

It's true to say I'm searingly shocked and it's no exaggeration to say I'm heartbroken; and yet, in some way, not surprised that this has happened. Damian, as is the way with most natural comedians, not to say talented and gifted artists, had a very dark side which I never revealed here, and nor will I. Ever. On the contrary, I shared with you the many hilarious antics and situations he presented me with, the memories of which I now hold precious. Ours was, above all, a meeting of extremely silly minds with the most staggering appetite for nonsense, and sharing it with each other. Faced with any slightly bizarre sight or situation, in a split second we would barely glance sideways and we were off, in a fit of laughing. I called him Podge; he called me Rodge. Of course, we had our spats; Damian was notoriously unpredictable and so, so bold, he used to simply LOVE winding me up; and being the control freak that I am, it used to work like a charm, sending me into a frenzy, albeit usually mock. I can't count the times we've been seen, at my statuesque 5 ft., himself 6'2", my one hand on the scruff of his neck, the other with his arm up his back, marching him off somewhere to give him a sound thrashing. Metaphorically, of course.. And then again, he often actually used to seriously infuriate me, so much so that at one period during the 10 years I was privileged to be his friend, I actually did withdraw contact until he sorted himself out. But we restored our friendship and all was well.

But if there was anyone who personnified the saying, Live Hard, Die Young, it was Damian. I think I always suspected I might get that terrible phone call one day, one way or another.

So, my lovely friends, tomorrow I'm off over the Irish Sea to attend his funeral. I'm so sad it's hard to breathe.

However. What I do NOT want is to bring the blog 'down', as you would say. On the contrary, I want to say this to you. I KNOW you will be thinking about me, I KNOW you are sending me those lovely, healing 'vibes' you are all so brilliant at sending. And I KNOW you will feel the sadness with me; it goes without saying and I so appreciate it.

And yet, wherever you found Damian, there was so much laughter and fun. And we must all keep this sense of fun and joie de vivre going, life is precious and priceless. So please, if you believe, then say a prayer, if you don't, then take a few seconds to contemplate the gift that is life and laughter. And then KEEP THE LAUGHTER GOING. Sadness is not for here. Goodness knows, our host CLP is laughter and siliness personnified. I shall perhaps not be around for a little while whilst I retreat into my little shell and gather my thoughts; meanwhile there will be an extra star in the sky tonight. Find it and raise a Slainte to it; and then grab life with both hands and cherish it.

This, for me, will pass. And I shall be left with the most priceless gift of some fantastic memories of my lovely friend and soul-mate.

Who, I have to say, if 'e was 'ere now, I'd kill 'im.

See. Nothing a laff can't cure.

RIP Damian yous big daft awful eejit.

    Hi Clodagh,

I guess I am going to be one of many that answer your blog, but what a privilege it is to have someone who was your soul-mate and always will be. It does get better, we all know that anyway, but there are times when the smallest things bring back the biggest memories. When those times happen it is the biggest thrill of all. He'll be there, dusting down your chair and making sure that it's ready for you whenever you meet up again. Viva soul mates.

He'll be fine, my mum made the best cup of tea ever, and my dad knew the filthiest jokes this side of the equator, they'll make sure he's sorted.

Oh heck It's all going a bit pete Tong on here.

BAG So glad you brought up that subject Plum never meant anything by it other than using your initials. You see you were drawn in by the Mafia the face Book gang. As so many on here have been.

I only came back to wish Chris Luck with the One Show and now you can have me banned again because to be honest I really have nothing in common with anyone here.

Oh thanks folks. They're a great bunch, hard work, but worth every moment. She who must be obeyed knows she is second place whenever college starts, but she's knows I'm happy....and where I am!!

They all come back, plus some new ones from 13th September, so watch this space.

And yes................CSN.....I will definitely have to censor quite a lot of it.

Love the idea of your mum and dad waiting to meet and greet!

One of my favourite characters is Death in the Terry Pratchett books. I've always hoped there's a element of truth that image! A kind soul to make a difficult time bearable

    Hiya...

Clodagh - what sad news... but... what wonderful memories Damien has given you and you are right - as long as we breath there should be fun and laughter to die for... (I know that's a bad pun but I certainly intend to laugh and smile all the way to the end - whenever that might be!)

So I say "cheers" to Damien - I am raising my glass to a man who has given us lots of laughs on this blog - albeit - vicariously! Thanks Clodagh... xxx

Hope everyone else is well and can I just say to CLP - I can cook but life really is too short for baking... probably because I can't do it!

Thank you for sharing your sad news.

I am so sorry to read your post. I feel your pain and wish that your trip across the Irish Sea is calm and your visit to the Emerald Island a celebration of the BFG's life. From how you describe the big daft eejitI am sure he would want his finale to be surrounded by smiles.

Stay strong honey, you know this is a safe place and a warm {{hug}} or two will always be here for you.
