The Arch Bishop Who Never Ceases To Surprise.

Chris Evans | 10:39 UK time, Thursday, 25 November 2010

You know, I thought I was in quite a good place in my life at the moment after my wilderness years and all that and I am, I'm doing ok, family life is very very good for me.

However, when one has the good fortune to meet someone like John Sentamu, you just realise how much further you can go when it comes to being a better person. Just being around him makes you want to improve yourself, and almost exclusively with regard to what you can do for others.

"What prayers do you say every morning John ?"

"I say very sad prayers to remind me of all the people who need my help much more than I need my help. They teach me not to be self centred and selfish."

What a fantastically simple mantra and the road to true freedom as a human being.

If I had a hat on, I'd take it off right now. Here's to J.S. Arch Bish Bash of York.

    Morning Chris

Lovely blog. And yes, although I don't pray (I do consider myself spiritual, although not religious) I just love doing things for other people, and giving gifts to others without the expectation of return.

You can't beat making a friend smile, or cheering up someone's dull day with the smallest of gestures.

    Morning Chris, MTF and Deevs,
I really enjoyed the interview with the arch bishop this morning, I could've listened to him speaking for hours with his beautiful accent. I'm going to miss the show from his house tho as Ill be home in Ireland for Xmas and t'internet hasnt reached the mothers' yet. It'll be the first time I'll be home for Xmas in quite a while so I can't wait! Which is what the reminder about the roofbox on the show this morning was about! Ive been asking him for WEEKS, lets see if it works, that's 2 mentions on R2 Ive had in a week!
I do pray sometimes and I've had reason to just lately but It's also been brought home to me it doesn't matter how bad you think you've got it
theres always some one who is worse off and you usually don't have to look too far to find them. Enjoy life folks, it's what its there for.
Returning hugs to all who so generously gave them when I was in need.
    ((((((((( ))))))))))))))))

    What about our Rips then????

    Morning all

Is missed the Archbish as I had to go to work, so may have to listen again.

How very true about helping though and this blog is definately the place to come when you need help! (Read that in any way you will!)

It's appropriate today though as its exactly 12 months since we had the fire at home and this blog was a great source of help and love. Especially the one person who can't comment in person any longer. Thank you Beez for all you did then.

    Cheers

Yo CLP, Yo ALL Reading This...

    Bingo Star 'ere...

CLP - Yes. there's definately something in religion... even if there is no god, of which i'm sure there is a god... But let's say there isn't one for a moment!
If you try to behave both to yourself & others in a way that religion teaches you... it makes you not only feel a better person... but it actually does make you a better person!!!!
I though do think there's a god... something 'igher in life - know what am sayin!!!!!!
INDEED I found being brought up around the church with my grandad being a vicar, it was one of the 'appiest times of my life!!!!
Revs, priests & bishops... they seem to 'ave a very good ora of calm & warmth coming off them!!!!!
Just like I fondly remember my grandad did!!!!
I also find going into churches... they are not only such beautiful buildings... but the atmoshpere of calm inside... and the feeling of some kind of presence there!!!!!!
Sadly something I find so terribly wrong with society in the UK is watching so many churches closing/ boarded up - a very sad siight of a empty site of worship & calm!!!!

Also since recently being blessed for the first time since I was a child & the religious experiences I 'ad including taking me strange photo, that a mentione don the blog a few months ago, life does seem to be improving for!!!!!!
It's like somebody is dropping opportunities my way... and am taking them!!!!!!!!
A lot of change is starting ter 'appen in me life for the better!!!!!!!!
A can just feel something renewed deep inside me... A can just feel meself building to something... from me career, to me love life... to me music... am even considering going on the X-Factor... something a few years back a would ave been way too shy ter even think about!!!!!!

As for thinking of others.... a do every day... one thing for example... a always use me indicators correctly at roundabouts - 100% TRUE!!!!!!!

    Bye!

  • Comment number 9.

PS Sorry about me spaces being done too fast, in the wrong area of a word, in me blogs... A blame it on the boogy aka me guitar playing... it's the fast finger of a guitarist that's too fast/ early for me laptop keyboard ter keep up with... 'ence me spaces in the places!!!!!!!

John Sentamu is a cool dude lol. Mr Hannah saw him preach once and he was wearing a hoodie with his dog collar ness on underneath to make the point that the hoodie doesn't make the person kinda thing.

Anyhoo - hi speed visit going for lunch with my friend today - i haven't seen her for like 6 years properly. (At least since we were in sixth form and I've been left that 6 years lol)

I listened to the Bishop this morning and enjoyed everything he said. Will listen to show from his home. Also Bingo Stars blog was nice today - number 8 - I liked it very much.

    Afternoon all,

Isn’t that typical, I do not post very often these days and as soon as I do manage to get on here CPL posts a new blog! LOL

I agree though I thought the Bish Bash was excellent on the radio this morning. He made me smile and I had only had one cup of coffee! ;-)

Got really emotional this morning at the petrol station. Don’t know why, just started filling up!

    I will get my coat……

    Keep smiling

    Hello CLP & Everyone (again)

Despite being a vicar's daughter (actually stepdaughter, my own dear old dad worked at a well know Birkenhead shipyard) I don't go to church but I do strongly believe there is something far greater than this life.

I'm afraid I have to admit to praying only when I or someone close to me is in trouble or in need. But I do consider myself to be a very kind and thoughtful person and we do, indeed, feel much happier when giving and helping others.

And as Bingo says most clergymen (and certainly my stepfather) have a lovely calm aura.

    Afternoon All,

Thanks for the blog today Chris. John Sentamu gives Christians a good name, which is excellent, he really comes across as a kind and loving man. I've made no secret of my faith on here and I wouldn't be where I am today without prayer and knowing that God is with me every step of the way. I try to pray and read my Bible every day, TRY being the key word there!

I know faith is not everyones cup of tea and people deal with things in their own way, but if anyone wants me to offer up a prayer or two for them, you know how to get hold of me xx

Here endeth the lesson for today...LOL.

Am breaking me own blog rules 'ere aka Never ter chat to me mother via the blog... But...

Yes a do remember the time a was at me grandad's aka The Rev.. and aged 4 a watched the gas board dig up the road outisde 'is 'ouse & bury these nice yellow plastic thing sin the ground!!!!!!
So much... a decided ter copy them & dig up the tiled path in 'is garden & dig a trench ter lay me own gas pipe!!!!!!!!

Yes that was one moment when me grandad was anything but calm on 'is return 'ome to see 'is beloved garden with roadworks in it!!!!!!! (gardening being 'is main 'obby!!!)

All a will say is at least me trench was straight... and a was only trying ter 'elp!!!!!!!

Could 'ave saved a fortune on gas bills if a managed ter break thorugh ter next doors gas pipe!!!!!!

Boy1 langushing in a heap today with sore throat and achiness - I'm under orders from his teacher to keep him home today so he can be at the performance tonight!!

Good news here is that the post has just arrived and I have a lovely Fairy parcel!! It's all in one piece and nicely chilled so I'll be enjoying that later!

    Love the spotty cover too!

What about that Rips then! Right place at right time or what!

    hmmmmmm,

Whilst not being the slightest bit religious nor spiritualist I do enjoy making people smile/laugh/help ease their worries away. I think too much is put on people to be good/happy/etc when they don't feel like it. Whilst i don't give things to people i do enjoying making them smile and in doing so make myself smile and be happy (is that giving without expecting anything in return?) Sometimes i make a fundamental error of judgement in that i say/type something that i think is funny and will make someone laugh and it doesn't . . then i feel bad :( I hope that by now my friends know that i'm not malicious (although i can be) and i'm just trying to help people through the day :-D

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't :( *sigh*

Well, it must be winter, because the office heating has failed again. I'm also suffering from another Internet virus, which given her description of the symptoms, I think I got from Deevs (cough, sniff, ache..). More likely my rapidly-expanding dose of man-flu may be because I went out last night sans scarf, having been dissuaded from showing off my newly-developed tying skills by the rest of the group, who suggested that looped scarves should only be worn by girls.

On the subject of the good Bishop, I'll admit to not being too big a fan of organised religion so much, but I do believe in belief (if you see what I mean). I'm also in the `small gestures can make a big difference' camp too, I find a single finger can often do the trick.... :-)

    Evening All,

What a fabulous night was had last night.
I must thank Alex for the ticket and it was great to see MTD, Deebee and Peter.
I really hope they didn't mind when I asked if I could slip off early, but I just had to.

The phrase 'broadcasting genius' seems to trip off the tongue when journalists (well, the better informed ones anyway) describe Chris.....
Last night reminded me why it does.
The way Chris held the, frankly, chaotic (but brilliant) quiz together last night, was a joy to watch.
He ad libbed so many links and introductions and worked the teams at such a rate, that I couldn't keep up with him, and I was just watching. Honestly - his mind is like a computer, and he is even funnier at large than he is in the confines of a radio studio.

As for Good people doing good things....
What he did last night, meant the world to me, and he knows it!
I just hope I didn't embarrass him in anyway.

Chris - you're one of the most decent blokes I know and I'm far from alone in thinking that.

Lovely interview with the Bish Bash this morning, that and the quiz have kick started Christmas for me

I've just thought. As bloggers, we have concentrated on CLP and SM's performance at the quiz last night - not mentioning the entertaining parts played by the other panellists - Patrick Keilty, Tony Blackburn, Janice Long, Kate Thornton and Trevor Nelson all contributed to a most enjoyable time. Obviously some of the show will be cut but hopefully the fun will shine through.

    Thanks again CLP and R2.

What an amazing post today. Extremely profound and heartfelt and actually very moving. Top stuff.
I didn't get to listen to much of today's show, alas. (Work and other such trivial matters...) Hope no Sporting Challenge injuries ensued - I'm guessing it was better that, as far as here down South is concerned - the BMx-ing came before potential snowing... Trust all went well, without too many horrendous dismemberments/Johnny-tantrums ;-)
Also, I really hope the problem with Chris's waterworks was fixed before little Noah's bath-time this evening! (How CUTE was he when he said "Jeremy Vine"?! What an adorable little poppet (Noah, not Jeremy!)!)
The one bit I DID coherently catch this morning was a MEGA-Johnny-strop during Head to Headlines... It even filtered out of the radio and inspired Jasper-dog to unleash a Johnny-strop* of his own, when he wanted more breakfast biscuits than I was prepared to offer him!
Stay safe and well if it's snowing where you are...
    Keep smiling!

I've got all the original old Ricky/Steve/Karl XFM radio shows on my PC from when they were broadcast live - there are a couple of shows where Chris is subtly slagged-off (all recorded during his wilderness - and we generally ALL have one - period). Perhaps that's where the unease comes from? Also, I think Ricky Gervais is quite a private, though actually very nice, man (the arrogant, couldn't-care-less persona is an act, I think) who doesn't care too much for promotional interviews and appearances. I suspect he may just have been tired and therefore a little uncooperative.
My brother gave me the "Idiot Abroad" book for my birthday recently (I don't have a TV) - hilarious. Especially when Karl said that Rio de Janeiro's 'Christ the Redeemer' statue looked "a bit like Jimmy Hill"...

Wish he'd been a bit more pleasant to the locals though...

On the whole however, if I had the choice, I'd rather be at a dinner party with Chris than with Ricky.

Here's a (relatively) serious question. Without any disrespect intended towards Steve McFadden - what DO women see in Phil Mitchell?! Look at them over the years - Kathy, Sharon, Lisa, Mel... all such beautiful women desperate for the touch of a character who is a violent alcoholic and who is basically a strategically-shaved Orang-Utan forced into human clothing and taught to walk upright.

Why? WHY?!? Jasper suggests something about being hung - and went on to mention a cart-horse. But what that might mean is anyone's guess.

Got the new Nigella book for a birthday/christmas prezzie and love the fact that some of the recipes give servings such 6 adults of 4 teenage boys!!

Very useful in the Sezza household!

That's one way i could be sure boy1 was proper poorly today - didn't want to eat!

Deevs, It's good, big, lots to read cooky book

And there are a fair number of recipes that I actually want to have a go at

That chicken with 40 cloves of garlic keeps tempting me

Maybe that would be a good accompaniment for Strictly!

Nigella's coca-cola cake is one of my favourites (to bake and to scoff) - If I'm among the lucky ones to get to do the 'phone lines for CiN 2011, I might make a cake or two especially for the bloggers.... ;-)

Thank you for your forgiveness Sezza. I shall do my utmost to try not to sin again....

Hi Jakeygirl! My parents are actually missionaries (and probably still wonder what happened in London in 1974... somewhere there is a really quiet, passive, compliant young lady with loud and bouncy parents - there was clearly a mix-up somewhere down the line...) I don't share all of their beliefs - but the basics are there. Just think how fantastic a place the world would be if EVERY SINGLE human stuck to the 10 commandments! If you like, I can tell you a (totally true) story of a bizarre coincidence seemingly brought about by prayer, which influenced many lives within my family...

Given the ultimate choice, I'd probably go with God over Darwin. After all, God's got lightning - and Darwin's got {cough}-all... :-D

    Evening.

I should be out by now, sitting in a bar preparing for tonight's pub quiz, anticipating the half-time sausage rolls and Pringles (mmmm......Pringles....). Instead, I'm sat in a freezing cold room at home waiting for someone in Mexico to give me a password to their system so that I can check it's working properly. Why couldn't Thanksgiving be in July?

P.S. My Facecloth account is reactivated, but all my groups have disappeared (it's a new phenomena, where you join a website in order that other people can ignore you. I think it's called `antisocial networking'). Does anyone have the link for CLP Bloggers, or at least tell me what to search for?

    Muchas gracias.

    Evening!

Back from Edinburgh where they have no snow to Newcastle where we have at least 3 to 4 inches - what's that all about.

Edinburgh Christmas market looked amazing when we went past it in the taxi to the station just such a shame we couldn't visit it. No idea about getting to work in the morning if this snowfall continues as it has been. Yuk.

Now, if I went and hid in Nigella's house, do you think when she finds me she'll drape me in fairy lights?!?

Roo, strangely, at school I was friends with a girl called Ruth, her parents were missionaries for the John Wesley Institute, in Horsleys Green, Bucks, and they all disappeared to Brasil when we were about 12!

They did come back, but I lost touch :(

For info, I would always go the Darwin route!

    JG x

  • Comment number 81.

JG - which Darwin route are we talking about - the Charles `theory of evolution'one or the John `does this canoe have a Sat Nav' one?

  • Comment number 82.

Ok, I've eaten dinner, had ice cream (amd a mince pie!) and I am starving!!!!!

    Deevs, maybe she'd adopt us!

I think her kids are older teenagers so they'll be leaving home soon and she'll so need someone there to take care of!

    Simples!

Still can't believe she's the same age as McKeith - is someone telling porkies or have I been had?

And bbc4 for the Beauty of Diagrams? How can we resist!!

  • Comment number 83.

Jakey - Can't exactly argue with Darwin - the beard alone puts him above most, if not all!

Deevs - I used to go out with one of Nigella's brothers. Looked EXACTLY like his father :-( Started smoking a PIPE (tobacco) at 28 :-( :-(

Uncle-Carl - Sadly (for me) I am cursed with a photographic memory and am something of a legend pub-quiz-wise... any tough obscure questions and I'm likely to be your gal. Every SINGLE Dr. Who companion since 1963 in less than 2½ minutes... Sad but true. Jasper-dog can also answer ANY question. As long as it is meat-based.

  • Comment number 86.

Sus, take care in that snow. Am tempted with a Christmas market on saturday but that depends on any of my boys being awake and I'm not hopeful in that!

    UC, Darwin & Sat Navs?

If we're choosing our celebrity family can I have Kate Humble and Kirsty Allsop as my cousins too please?

On Autumnwatch, everryone's wrapped up in layers and layers of sensible clothing except one girl in the office in a tight, black, cut-away top!! Desperate for a moment maybe!!

    Sezza xx

  • Comment number 87.

No, they really are thee same age, give or take a month or so!

UC, don't mention SatNavs in my presence again!! Oh and BTW I meant the Charles version!

  • Comment number 88.

My dad talks to the Sat Nav Lady. He won't now even use any shortcuts that he knows - "because it might upset the lady". When she announces that she's 'recalculating', he says "yes dear".

Should I be worried? Jasper-dog barks that I ought to investigate specialist "Retirement Homes for the Terminally-Disenfranchised". Could he be right?

    Keep smiling,
