500 Words - No More Than - But Not Less!

Chris Evans | 11:08 UK time, Monday, 31 January 2011

Fewer and less, another minefield of the English language. What??? I have no idea. Of course I understand the rules but because, I suppose, somewhere deep in the recesses of my brain I don't agree with them necessarily, this kind of information drifts away, almost as if aware that it's probably preaching to the unconverted.

Any which way, our short story competition begins today. If you're thirteen or under we want to hear whatever story you have to tell us. It doesn't matter what you know or don't know, because this is all about making it up! You can't be wrong - how cool is that ?

Click on to 500 Words to find out more and TEACHERS - we need your help too - same place to find out how.

    Hello CLP & Everyone.

    Less is more!

    MM xxx

  • Comment number 4.

    That's what I'm told CLP but I don't agree!

The English language is so complicated and I often wonder how foreigners learn it when we ourselves can't.

Anyway, this short story competition is a wonderful idea and an interesting way for children to learn how to write.

Hi everyone from a wet, overcast but mild Ayrshire.

What a great idea CLP, I thought of our very own Deevs until I heard the age limit, but hopefully some of the bloggers' children could take part.

Hope you all had a good weekend.

BRILLIANT IDEA !! Ive e mailed you and written to you cos as a publisher Ive had an idea too. How about I publish all the best entries, proceeds to charity /??>

  • Comment number 9.

Hi Chris: what an absolutely fantastic idea/opportunity. How I wish someone had thought of this when I was 12 and wrote my short story about the end of the world ...! Chris, you continue to be a daily inspiration, really you do.

MTF: what a wonderful job you are doing looking after our feathered friends. I feed the birds too, but not as dedicated as you. Years ago, we lived in a flat and the lady downstairs put out, in her garden, a chicken carcass after dinner every Sunday. Result: 10,000 gulls descending on our wee estate! Slight exaggeration, but only slight!

Bids: thanks for your continued support.

    CG: thinking of you. xx

Maddy: I so agree: how does anyone learn English?! And I love your advice to right write!

Debs: oooh, all the very best for tomorrow. I hope you savour every moment of this job, even though it will be very, very hard work, by the sound of it.

pharopress: hope Chris gets back to you!

    Back to work for me!

    C xx

P.S. I do believe I saw our lovely MC here at some point over the weekend - hope you are really on the mend now!

  • Comment number 10.

Why do kids walk in, put the TV on, change to kids TV channel then wander off to do something else?

Hopefully gone away to start story writing but somehow I'm not convinced!

Love this writing idea, what a brilliant encouragement to children and a sneaky announcement of an OB breakfast show! Wonder how many more there wil be?

Pharoah, love the idea of publishing the stories. You might email the show direct to make sure your details get through.

Debs, am very excited about your new job, hope you have a shiney new lunchbox and a whole case full of new pencils!

Chris, heard that discussion this morning. Fewer or less? Who really cares? We all knew what you meant.

  • Comment number 12.

    Debs, good luck tomorrow.

    Hallo Chrissie, hope you're ok.

Wonder if our 8yr old's budding website (all about poo)would be eligible?

    xxxxx

  • Comment number 13.

Annie, think the 8-yr old's website would be ok as long as it's a exciting, funny story about poo!! ;-)

MTF, to answer you question on the last blog, the property was stubborn because it is on the first floor, it has storage heaters, it's not near Clacton, the applicant hasn't sold their house (because they haven't put it on the market!) and it was too quiet!!

All reasons given by people on our waiting list who said they wanted a property on this estate but not this one!

A nice lady is now taking it so fingers crossed it all goes through ok

    Sezza xxx

  • Comment number 14.

    Evening all

Do you think I could enter the book I started writing aged 12, but never finished? The first hurdle to overcome would be finding it! Keep your eyes peeled for a green spiral bound thick notepad.

CSN: hope you're ok, like jillygoat, I don't understand but am inclined to worry.

Sezza: I'm confused as to your job now... I got the impression you worked in a sheltered housing complex, is this not the case?

    Hugs to anyone wanting one
    Oz

  • Comment number 15.

Oz, it is but part of my job is letting the properties - I have flats and a few bungalows - when they are vacant

This flat has been empty for a while as people put their name on the waiting list then when you offer them something, it isn't quite what they want!

    Laters

    Sezza xxx

  • Comment number 16.

    Great idea! Just a question...

Can you go over 500 words? I know someone who has done so but cannot get her entry down below 535 without losing the gist of the story and she would appreciate knowing if there is any give on the limit, however small it may be.

    Thanks!

  • Comment number 17.

    Hi Oz,

Have you looked under your bed ??? or have you shredded it pre-move ?

Seza, could you please work your magic ? I am still needing an electrician to come and mend my living room light . Mission impossible it seems.

Chrissie , hello , you have been on my mind, I hope you are ok, and your sister is comfortable. Today, I have half a sore throat, which is probably going to bring on a bit more cold . I cant believe how long this is going on for .Even a cream egg didn't make me feel any better .

    bye for now
    MC xx

  • Comment number 18.

Sezza: ah, I see, multi-talents required at your place of work too ;)

MC: it is definitely not under my bed, I know, I have looked in everything I've put under there. It wasn't shredded pre move either. So it's either in a box that failed to move with me (and I'm sure there's one or two of those, I just have to suss what I'm missing and then ask for it...) or it failed to move from my parents to me in the first place (which there's an even better chance of!). It'd be interesting to find it again, see what my 12 year old self thought of the world, I think I was into Sweet Valley High books at that age, so heaven knows what influences there were on my writing ;)

    Evening all!

Baggy - thanks ever so much for yesterday; it was great fun, hope we can do it again some time. Jasper is sorry he wasn't as sociable as he usually is. He was still suffering from his overdose of stolen prawns!

I think the children's writing thing is a fabulous idea - hope lots of kids feel inspired to take part. Few things are greater than a child's imagination.

Jasper-dog is 12 - can HE enter? If not, I may have to take issue with the ´óÏó´«Ã½ over its species-ist stance... ;-)

    Keep smiling!

Talking of getting carried away - reminds of the time when a once tried ter resist arrest - long story all!!!!!!

    Bye!

  • Comment number 22.

Evening CLP and the bouncing blog, ah the perils of the countable versus the uncountable noun! Just one of the many pitfalls and trick of the English language and it's frankly strange grammar rules!

But don't get me started on misuse of the apostrophe!!!

The competition sounds great, we used to have one each year in Primary School, and all the stories would be published in a book.

Hope everyone has had a great day, am not long home from work and shattered! A bath is definitely in order.

Good morning everyone from a very blustery and overcast Ayrshire.

Bids - What a lovely uplifting post, the days a definately stretching out now, it's starting to get light about 7.30am and it's still fairly light at 5pm.

What a pantomime last night, David and I took the 4 cats and the 2 dogs to the vets for their annual check up/vaccination, not an easy task I can assure you, but that's them all done for another year, and Ellie booked in to get dressed on Friday.

Hope you all have a good day.

I’ve been lurking around the blog since Chris took over from Terry. I was under the impression that Chris actually posted items to the blog and not just a few words at the beginning (probably not even written by him!)

The blog seems to have very little to do with Chris and his programme and is more of a social network for a small number of people.

Maybe that’s the reason it seems quieter than usual. Potential bloggers may be put off by this.

    Just my opinion.

The problem was nothing to do with posts on this blog, some people have one set of rules for themselves and another set for others. I'm still very upset, but I will get over it and still intend to have a bit of fun at times!

    Thinking of you lots.

    Morning everyone

Welcome MonaLott, nice to 'meet' you. Stick around, you may just like it here. We did!

    I'm here CG, but not 100% ....

Remember the tonsilitis episode last week? Finished the antibiotics on Friday, had a nice weekend and then Sunday pm the barbed wire feeling returned to my throat. When I woke up yesterday morning I was in agony, but went to work nonetheless. Then went to the docs mid morning who immediately sent me to the local hospital for a blood test for suspected Glandular Fever (why I capitalised that I don't know!).

When I woke up this morning I felt like my throat had actually closed up. I feel tired, hot, cold, up, down, hungry, sick, in, out ..... to be honest, I really don't know how I feel other than fed up.

Just phoned the docs for test results to be told by the receptionist that their "system is down" so she can't give me any results until tea time today. I said could a good old-fashioned phone call be made to the hospsital so that at least we might know what treatment I need, and if it is GF, I can tell work how long I'm going to be off for. But no, I have to ring back at tea time today, and if the system is still down, I then have to wait 3 days for the results to get returned to the GP by post.

This is NOT helping my mood or mindset one tiny ickle bit.

Sorry to bring the blog down. I'm not a very good patient at the best of times and Nic has already told me off twice today for (1) sorting out some washing to go in the machine, and (2) planning to nip out to Wickermans shop - apparently I'm to stay in the warm and he will go buy the ice cream, noodles and my nans birthday present.

Not had time to catch up properly with all of your goings on, so big huggles to anyone who needs them (and I include myself in there!), Chrissie and CG - hope things are ok with you and your respective families, and Debs - good luck on Day 1 of the New Job! Go show 'em what you're REALLY made of!

    Back later.
