Ken's Back And All Is Well

Chris Evans | 15:24 UK time, Tuesday, 26 April 2011

I asked Russell Brand on the telly on Friday if he had a guru. To which, he replied he did - in fact he had two. Both sincere and genuine. I'm with him here, I think having a guru is no bad thing, and furthermore I don't think any of us should be backwards at coming forwards when we need to ask someone who might know a bit more than we do for help.

For this I have Ken (ZenKen) Bruce, the Zenmeister of Radio Twosville to turn to. I have often bowed down to his commensurate wisdom when experiencing doubt, paranoia and insecurity - basically every day of my life. Rumour has it, his last fortnight's break was largely to recharge his batteries in preparation for my continuing needy education.

On Monday I visited the brilliant Motorcycle Museum (and Tea Rooms) in The New Forest. The place is a shrine to two wheeled power from the mid-19th century to the present day. But also antique radios feature there - that work. And whose voice was radiating warmth and ennui across the peaceful showrooms of glistening chrome and paintwork? The Zenmeister. I told him as much when I saw him first thing today.

"So, finally, it's official, I'm a museum piece eh ?" he remarked quick as a flash. Never Ken, never but a national treasure and a fine colleague - oh yes.

    Hello all.

    Bit chilly here today.

Glad you all had a lovely weekend.

I had a great weekend with all the family, long lunches and bbq's and lots of fun and laughter.

I now have an empty loft after clearing out all my daughters Michael Jackson's stuff this morning and taking it over to her house, found some Cabbage Patch dolls up there too.

AliB and Chrissie, I am looking forward to the Royal Wedding too, all the family are coming over for the day.

The Royal Choccie Biccie cake is on Blue Peter just now! Well at least a cake like it is! The Head Chef won't tell us the real recipe!

    Looks yummy though!

I'm going to sit with my Mum and watch all the proceedings. The boys are ringing a quarter peal of church bells in celebration

    Hi Chris,

It can be so helpful to turn to someone more experienced than ourselves, can't it? Very funny what you said about Ken needing a rest to help with your continued education! I don't think it goes quite that far, but I do get your drift! xx

Gail: I do hope the Edinburgh mini-meet will go ahead, even though as I explained privately, it's looking doubtful for me now. Being a tourist in Edinburgh is brilliant!

CSN: what a very busy day you have had! Bet you feel great getting the loft cleared out.

    Billie: hiya!

Sezza: do you have champagne in the fridge too?!

    Have a nice evening everyone.

Hallo and Good very pleasant evening,

What made my day today was when a very young boy gave me a pink emblazened daisy whilst I was talking to his mother. I have placed the stem in a drop of water so that it lasts. It was on par if not better than the pleasant suprise of hearing Dickie (sitting in for Chrissie (lol) play the guitar and sing a song for Zoe Ball!

    Hello bloggers!!

Ah the motorcycle museum - that takes me back to my childhood...........I lived about a mile away in New Milton and in fact about 5 houses from Sammy Miller who owns and runs the motorcycle museum.

Back to today..............I am feeling very excited Lauren (eldest daughter) has been in France with my Mum for a month and is coming home on Thursday. Maddie and i have made a welcome home banner for the airport a la gavin and stacy!!!

I hope you are all really well

Evening CLP and welcome back to the airwaves! Hiya to everyone else too.

I do like Ken's show when I get to hear it, on my days off. It's good to have someone to turn to for advice, and I think it shows a good deal of maturity to admit when you need it!

I will be watching the wedding at home on Friday, then driving down to Dumfries as some friends (and former colleagues) are getting married that day too, I'm joining the reception in the evening, and looking forward to it very much!

Hope everyone has ahd a good day,

    Evening each

I have a couple of people I look up to and take their advice but the wisest and most honest person I consulted was my brother. I miss his pithy comments.

It's nice to have Ken back.

Haven't caught up yet, I'm just home from doing a couple of hours work but I see Rosie above me. I'll be watching the wedding too. Did anyone read Victoria Cohen's article in the Observer about it? Made me laugh and I agree totally.

    Back in a bit. xxxxx

    Evening All,

Quite agree about someone older and wiser to talk things over with and seek advice - mine is the lovely Beryl, who I mentioned the other day, she is a wise old bird.

We can have a mass blog session whilst the wedding is on, I'm sure Chris won't mind. I was 13 when Charles and Di got married, so I am right excited about this one. I think it's important that the youngesters watch it, as William will be their King one day. My friend in the States is getting up early to watch it and we are going to FB chat whilst it's on. Only three more sleeps :)

Annie, Oz good to see you xx I don't always blog in the evening so miss some people.

  • Comment number 14.

Hallo Ali. What a good idea - a mass blog session - especially about The Dress!! I'm up for that. Don't have to look after teeny boys on Friday as their Mum has the holiday so I'll have the tv on as soon as I get up.

Having given it some thought, I think Victoria Cohen is actually Victoria Coren. A funny article anyway.

  • Comment number 15.

    Hi all.

Put me down for some mass blogging too.... IF I am off. Cant say, that the boss is that enthusiastic, despite all the bunting that is on show outside the lab!!!

I still look back and see those two little lads on that dreadful day in 1997. I lost my Mum that year, and at 35, felt like my world had ended.

I admire both of them and how they have coped.

AliB and Annie, a mass blog session on Friday sounds a good idea, in between looking after the family members that are descending at my house at god knows what time in the morning, for the day.

I'll have to blog in spirit I think unless i take the laptop to Mum's which sort of defeats the object of going!

I'm definately up for an extra-special FNWC - a touch of bubbly called for i think!

I'm just watching masterchef - not something i usually do - does it help when it takes longer to tell us what the dish is than it does for people to eat it!

Hi everyone. Chris - what a lovely blog about Ken. I think it speaks volumes about you. Years ago when you were all over the radio and the telly and (by your own account) struggling with a few demons, it still came through how you respected people who were more experienced than you in showbiz when you interviewed them. I guess it's the same whatever we do for a living - we look up to our peers and it's only their approval that we seek, to be honest.

On another topic, I'm very excited about the wedding. It's bunting and flags and snacks and bubbly all the way here. I've heard all the arguments against having the monarchy but I still wouldn't change it for the world. I just couldn't bear all of that history to come to a sudden stop.

I dont seem to be that excited about the wedding I'm afraid. I'm glad we have a day off and I'm happy that they are getting married and hope they will be happy, but with two weddings under my belt this year and one more to go I'm afraid I'm weddinged out. We will be watching it with family at a BBQ on Friday so hopefully will catch the feeling then :-)

Seza - thanks for the comment about my wedding, Chris' dedication came on the ipoddy on Mon when me and Mr bp where together and we just smiled - I'm so glad I married him.

Penultimate day of this job and then brand new spanking job on Tuesday :-)

Barmy, Quite agree with your last paragraph, there is so much history there. And good old Queenie is still going strong at 85!

I am going to be torn on Friday morning as to whether to watch the ´óÏó´«Ã½ or listen to Chris...eek...what to do? But I shall be up at the crack of sparrows soaking up the atmosphere, raising a glass at 11 and probably wiping away a tear (and I hardly ever cry!) Two more sleeps (can you tell I'm excited).

Sorry Chris how remiss of me not to comment on your blog to Ken. One of the many things I love about you is how you acknowledge and respect those who have more experience in your field. She is slowly improving and is now able to make short "visits" without oxygen and is managing to eat a little better. She has some help lined up when she comes home from hospital, although no time frame for that just yet.

  • Comment number 63.

CSN - Thank you so much. That's very sweet of you. I must say, I am terribly relieved as well. I am a realist and I know that Jasper is getting on a bit (isn't that one of the cruellest tricks of nature? Making dogs' lives so short compared to our own...) but I could really do with his support at least until my insolvency order runs its course (due to finish next year; hurrah!).

And may I just say that giving a recuperating Staffordshire Bull Terrier most of a garlic-butter chicken Kiev by way of a special treat is NOT a wise course of action? It is a very good job that I do not have ready access to a large cork and a small hammer this evening, otherwise the RSPCA might be in touch with me, wanting "a word"... ;-)

Daisy - having been out of the loop for a bit, I missed the fact that Maddy has not been well. I am very, very, sorry indeed to hear this and hope she will make a swift and full recovery. Please pass my (and Jasper's) love to her if you should happen to be in contact with her again. Thank you.

I'm looking forward to another long weekend, although I'm not sure I'll be watching the wedding. I might have a quick look, but won't be sitting down to watch it for the duration.

I can't possibly catch up, so hope that everyone is OK, and best wishes to Maddy for a speedy recovery.

I'll try to stay logged in now so I don't have any more issues.

Morning CLP and the rest, from a beautifully sunny Edinburgh!

Well my dress is ironed, wrap too, and I've practised walking in my new shoes to break them in a little so I think I'm all set for tomorrow....

.... I'm one of those who will be celebrating two weddings tomorrow, the Royal one in the morning, then it's off to Dumfries in the afternoon to go to a reception for friends who are also tying the knot.

Looking foward to tomorrow's show, I wonder where they will be broadcasting from?

Right I'm off to enjoy the sunshine,

    Rx

    Good Very Sunny Morning All,

I've been daydreaming, imagining the excitement. I think if I were Kate and Wills I would see if I could hook up and go for a run together. Then have a big sweaty kiss and a cuddle in the shade at the end of it. To stay grounded and keep the fires (of love) burning. Imagination runs wild with romance! I better keep a hold of mine and cherish it forever. Bex

    Afternoon all.

Just got back from a very packed supermarket, while I was in there I got a message from Marjie, she is missing us all and is hoping to watch the Royal Wedding tomorrow.

AliB, will send her your love. I am getting very excited about the Wedding too.

Rosie, have a wonderful day tomorrow.

    JG, lovely to see you.

Sezza, glad your Coffee morning went well.

Baggy, glad your last day is going ok.

Dozy, Sorry you've got to work tomorrow, hopefully you'll be able to have a peek x

csn, Thanks for passing on my love to Maddie x

Penny, I agree I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, I see that a not so regular blogger on FB is moaning about it. But I shall be soaking it all up. On the way to work this morning, I walked past a number of houses with flags up, a little boy on his way to school with a flag, and then two really sweet little girls dressed as princesses - it all made me smile and that's what tomorrow is all about, making people smile. Although sometimes I am so nervous for Kate, bless her.

I'm wondering whether to do my food shopping tonight, thought I'd share that with you all!

    Afternoon all,

What a glorious sunny day - I hope the sun continues to shine on the Royal couple tomorrow.

Just a quickie to wish everyone a good weekend.

Ali like you I saw lots of bunting, flags and little girls in their pretty dresses and tiaras which made me smile too.

See you all in a week or so at the weekend I'm off on a mini road trip up the west coast of Scotland for a few days.

    Take care

    Hiya

When I sit and watch all the people setting up camp in the Mall, I am so tempted to head for the station and join them!

It's only the fact i'll see so much more on TV that stops me

It looks thoroughly joyful though and seeing the pictures of Kate arriving at the hotel, she looks so happy and so relaxed!

Baggy, enjoy your weekend of unemployment!

My Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen, Hellooooooooooooo!

Loving the guest list names, tried it on my hubby and he came up as Lord John Frisky-Litchfield!.......oooer missus!

Mine is Lady Olive Pippin-Bridge, much more sedate.

We are having a small street party tomorrow, just 11 houses in our Close and nearly all attending with a few invited guests. I'm really looking forward to it despite the threat of rain. Wellie boots and brollies on standby.

Right, there's a trifle waiting to be made, so I'd better get a move on!

    See you later,

    Lady Olive Pippin-Bridge xx
