Yesterday's Pause For Thought stimulated such a reaction. ..

Chris Evans | 06:26 UK time, Wednesday, 9 May 2012

...I thought it would be a good idea to publish it via today's blog: Please enjoy the wonderfully positive and profound musings of Rabbi Pete Tobias:

Last night I saw an amazing sunset. As I reached a small area of open land close to my home in Hertfordshire, the sun, large, round and red, was a full circle, its base just touching the tops of the distant trees. In less than five minutes it had sunk completely below the horizon.

It gave me an insight into why my ancestors, without such technological tools as clocks or calendars chose to mark the end of one day and the beginning of the next at sundown. If each day is an opportunity, then the setting of the sun - especially when seen so graphically - is a chance to reflect on what has been achieved in the time that's passed since the last sunset.

I was careful not to say 'the twenty-four hours that have passed' in that last sentence. Because the time between sunsets is never exactly twenty-four hours. The 'hour' is a human invention, as is the idea that one day ends and the next one begins at midnight. Measuring time is a peculiar business. So is our place in it, and our relationship with it.

The poet Philip James Bailey once wrote:

'We live in deeds, not years; in thoughts, not breaths;
In feelings, not in figures of a dial.
We should count time in heart-throbs. A person most lives
Who thinks most - feels the noblest - acts the best.'

It doesn't much matter whether we consider that each day ends and the new one begins at midnight, sunset, or whenever we wake up in the morning. The important thing is to use well the time we have been given.

In the eleventh century, a rabbi called Bachya ibn Pakuda, wrote: 'Days are like scrolls. Write on them what you want to be remembered'.

At some point every day - sunset, midnight or maybe at around 9.15 in the morning, perhaps everyone should stop and consider what might be remembered about that particular day. You might even call it a pause for thought...

Peace and Love.

That is lovely, although I don't get to hear PFT on your show but I do hear it on Vanessa's show and I enjoy Aled's show on a Sunday morning.

It's funny, my friend had people over from Tenessee (sp) at the weekend (people she had met on an internet forum!, a bit like us bloggers), anyway, we were all outside in her barn having pizza, beer and karaoke on Saturday night when I noticed that beautiful full moon and we all stopped for a minute and admired it, and also commented how amazing it is that if they were at home, they would see that exact same moon from there, it really was a sight to behold, it was spectacular and unusually for the west of Scotland the sky was crystal clear!!

    Have a good day everyone.

Very ‘timely’ pause for thought for me - thank you. And I am going to take your lead immediately and not type any more/spend any more time on this lap-top! All I *will* say is that I am very VERY excited about the next 24/36 hours - Radio2-day! 10th May is a very special date for me and if I get to meet YOU at The Hundred Club tomorrow, as well as seeing Jamie Cullum, Bellowhead, Chris Rea, Keane and the cast of Jersey Boys - plus a duet from Tom Jones & Jessie J.......well, that will be a verily good scroll inDEED. xXx

Chris: thank you for your blog this morning - I would have totally missed the Pause for Thought - and it is all just so true. xx

    Hi everyone:

Just popping in, while I have a quick ten minutes' break! Hope you are all well, and getting through the week.

Crumpy (from the previous blog) I have passed on your message to MrS, so fingers crossed! Just to say, a taxi from Edinburgh to Glasgow would be a minimum of £100! But, if comes to this, I would be delighted to entertain the bloggers - wouldn't it be great to have a Bloggers Kitchen Party!

Kandks: good to see you here the other day. How lovely for you to have met Sally - she's a bit of a sweetheart.

Dozer: sounds like you had a great time on Saturday night. I love pizza, beer and karaoke!

Nothing much to report from me - right now, it's all work, work, work!

    Have a good day, all.

    Morning all

It's grey, grey, grey here today so I am holding the thought of a beautiful sunrise in my mind to light me through the day

I sometimes look at the sky and the way it changes and wonder what people must have thought was happening.

This low cloud is so oppressive. I'm sure there were 2 of the Eurofighters stationed down this way flying around on Sunday but the cloud was so low I couldn't see them!

KKs, Was nice for you to see Sally theother day and for her to think of us! She is always so friendly. I sometimes feel she gets a bit of a hard time on the drivetime show now but she still sounds like she's smiling

Bernie, nice to see you! Are you going to the 100 club then? Give us a wave on the radio. If you see Chris, be sure to get your hug!

Dozer, lovely thought about the moon shining on all of us

Bids, how's the building going? are they nearly done now?

I'm looking forward to 2Day - if only to see if Graham Norton realises he is doing the breakfast show and not 7pm - he doesn't strike me as the most "morning" person in the world!!

    Hello CE & Everyone.

The pause for thought has made me pause for thought CLP!

It is important that we use our time wisely and not waste it it's quality of life that matters and not quantity. But on the other hand it's better to live a long life being happy and doing good rather than living a short life being happy and doing good. I'm now losing track of what I'm talking about LOL.

I don't kn ow what's going to be remembered about my day yet but I hope it's good. Some days we remember but some are best forgotten.

Greetings CLP & Rabbi Pete... And ALL Bloggeroons...

    Bingo Star 'ere...

CLP & Rabbi Pete - A most nice blog of which it's sad that in our modern UK society few seem ter see such as yer write above/ do the above!!!!!!!

Everybody seems so busy rushing around.... Upter the eyes in consumerism and greed and in trying ter keep with with the joneses.... Upter their eyes in debt.... 'ence they feel stressed which makes them rush about even more.... As they rush about working 'ard ter pay off their debt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Something that my father told.... Despite 'im being a manic depressive and VERY difficult ter get on with due to this illness 'e 'as..... A do remember when ave caught 'im on a good dee.... Some good advice that 'e gave.... That 'e got from 'is going ter church/ religion.......

    The advice goes like this:

This world is made for the wise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Simple!

And 'ow true this is.... We live with all we need.... In this modern age we live with such amazing things around us..... That there is no need ter get stressed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok not always easy when yer boss at work is putting pressure on yer or yerv just 'ad a nasty letter through yer door demanding money..... But again.... This world is for the wise!!!!!!!!
If yer boss at work or the company as a whole was run better.... Then the work place would be better.... The opportunity is there.... God 'as given all we need.... But 'umans make a mess of the paradise that is earth!!!!!!!!!!!

What ter do.... Is put being wise inter practice by resisting the people who ar enot wise!!!!!!!
For example the nutters a meet on the roads in me job.... Yes not always easy when somebody cuts you up.... But again 'be wise'.... Ignore their bad driving, their stress.... let them go on ter 'ave the accident that they will 'ave..... Don't be part of their stress.... again 'be wise!!!!!'

Know what am sayin' 'ere blog dudes????

The points am trying ter 'it?????

Without being 'it on the road!!!!!?

A remember in March when a went ter Thailand sitting on the top of a mountain on Phi Phi Island surrounded by butterflies.... in the 100 degree 'eaty.... looking down at the beach area below and the otherside of the island..... Thinking EXACTLY what Rabbi Pete said this morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A was in paradise.... This world is paradise!!!!!!!!

And in this modern age.... The fact a can work 'ard, save some money then fly on a plane ter paradise..... Something my ancestors could not do as there was no jet planes..... It made me even more realise.... amongst all the caos that us stupid 'umans create.... What with the credit crunch, politics etc..... Right now god 'as given us paradise......

It's there waiting for the wise people to use it and enjoy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    'ope this 'elps all!!!!!!!!!!

PS 'ere is a link ter the view of the place where a was sitting.... 'ope the photos take you ter what a could feel looking at the sun over the sea.... surrounded by birds and butterflies >>>

    Afternoon All,

Just stopping for a quick cuppa so thought I'd pop my head round the blog door and say "Hi".

    How's everyone?

Chris, Great "Pause for thought", one should stop often and do just that and also count one's blessings, life is too short and flying by too fast.

I had a fantastic weekend with my friends in Lancs. I hadn't seen them for a year, but it was like I'd just seen them yesterday - fab :) It was sunny but a tad chilly, and no rain until I left on Monday, so that was good. Plenty of good food was eaten, lots of tea drunk and I even had a couple of glasses of wine - get me! We visited some lovely places and all in all had a great time. I just wish we lived nearer to each other.

Yesterday I took a cheeky extra day off and met my Mum for a cuppa and a mooch around the shops. Today is back to reality with a big bang, organising an event for next week.

I hope everyone had a good BH weekend, only three weeks until the next one :)

Sezza, Sending you big hugs {{{}}} I hope you are OK xx

It was good to read the PFT. As I feel I've said before only hear the show for a very limited time until 7.40. It did make me think.

As you say Ali - not long until our next BH ........................ eeeeeeks. I've still got 70 leaflets to deliver about what's going on in our village over the Jubilee weekend. We've something on every day. The bunting went up over the weekend - bring it on !

    Hope all are OK

    Afternoon all

Apologies for the absence (again) but my laptop went a bit haywire and logged me out of everything and deleted stored passwords, and I just couldn't remember this one at all...

Anyhow, I miss your show CLP, I sometimes get the last half hour depending on which hours I'm working, so normally catch PFT some days. Thanks for reposting that one though, as today has been a rare day off on account of the wibbly wobbly tollbridge being closed for the day. I really cba to work out another route to work, so took the day off!

All is well here with me and Finlay, love to everyone, I really miss the blog and will try to find more time to be on here!

Lyndylooooooo got a mensch from Zoe! Yaaaaaaaaaay ......

    Morning all

Just a quickie as life's still really busy, in a good way.

Lovely to see some "old" bloggers returning.

I won't be able to listen to all of 2Day as I'm off out at lunchtime for the rest of the day - lunch with a friend/colleague and then we're going to visit a friend who had a stroke a few weeks back and she's now in a recouperation facility not far from here. Then, if time allows, I'll be buying a new PC as my laptop is struggling with my workload and keeps "hanging" which scares me somewhat when I'm logged in to other people's accounts and CRMs!

Randall is loving this wet weather: now he can go off lead he manages to find every single muddy puddle to splishsplash about in. After his walk last night, Nic questioned whether we had a "liver and white" Springer or a "liver and mud" coloured Springer .....

Right, must get on. Have a fab day everyone.

    Muchos amore,

    Good morning all,

We have had rain and if the sky is anything to by,we have a lot more to come, the house is looking like a Chinese laundry. One thing is that it's not cold if that's any comfort.

Gail ,have a lovely holiday on that long boat ,looking forward to hearing all about it .

Crissie ,now you say that a taxi to your place would be £100, well divided by all of us attending wont be that much ,so If I was you I'd start stocking up ,You do know that I'm quite partial to kitchen parties ;-))

Deev, hope that you find your friend getting better ,must be awful for her .

Bondy ,was wondering how you were ,how lovely to see you and glad that you and yours are well . I hope the jobs going well for you .now that US blog meet ,can you give me plenty of notice as I'm not fond of flying ,so I'd have to paddle ;-))

Sezza, saw two of your Gibbs last week end in the Cotswold's ,and was talking to there owner ,he said they are great little dogs . It was wet then and they had little coats on ,now is Gibbs going to have one??

The house Sezza ,is well 95% there ,they have over run their deadline which was the end of April, just seven chaps indoors now ,some rooms finished then there is the snag list that they are working their way through.
I'm desperate for my promised week off which I hope isn't too far away now. and that reminds me I have to pick up some biscuits on the way to work as I was berated yesterday for the lack of them.

Right just time for a cuppa before I get ready to go ,so have a good day all and hope the weather is kinder for you .

    Take care ..Bids.xxx.

    Hi everyone:

Thank goodness it's Thirsty Thursday! Have been up since 5am today - leaking boiler - MrS "bleeding" the radiators at 4.45am - it took me a wee while to realise what was happening! The engineer is organised, and hopefully will make an appearnce this morning. Ye gods, it's one thing after another!

JG: so looking forward to seeing you in Edinburgh. We must make sure we have a chat - I'm still sorry I didn't get to speak to you in Leeds, two years ago!

007: hiya! How lovely to see you - how on earth could we forget you? Not possible!

Dozer: I thought Graham was fabulous this morning - I don't know if he would want to do it every weekday morning, but the mini-version of his Saturday show was fun! How lovely you have your narrowboat holiday to look forward to. xx

Cheryl: what a busy day you have ahead! Hope your friend continues to recover - she will be happy to see you, I'm sure.

Bids: yes, that's true - £100 divided by four, each taxi - it's totally do-able! I am stocking up on white/red wine and k*ttle crisps, as of now!

Today sees another busy day at the coalface, and then tonight MrS and I are out for a wee glass of something with MsS before she leaves for holiday on Saturday. I can't tell her that my heart is in my mouth at the thought of her going away for a week (!) - I am playing it cool and pretending that I won't miss our daily chats ... aaarrgggh!

    Have a good day, everyone.

Mary will need that, too! Black pepper version of crisps, glad you reminded me! Thankfully, the boiler has been sorted - nothing too drastric, but whatever part needed fixing, has been fixed!

    Afternoon,

Just having a quick catch up with the blog, but fortunately or unfortunately there isn't a lot to catch up with!

I'm loving 2day, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but life would be boring if every day was the same. Particularly enjoyed Zoe's dance hour as I was on my way to a cheeky breakfast with friends. There is a local garden centre that does a fry up. You get six items, plus a slice of toast and a tea or coffee for £5.95 BUT you get two for the price of one - bargain!! However, no more cooked breakfasts for me as I've had two this week already! I'll be having salad for tea :)

Dozer, Have a fab holiday, it really is a great way to travel xx

Chrissie, MsS will be back before you know it and I'm glad your boiler has been sorted xx

Hi Susan, Deevs and Bids xx

Right back to my badges! (Is it sad that I inherited a box of badges that I have just had to sort out into sizes and types and have removed all the old name labels, so I can start afresh?? ;)

    Greetings all!

This CLP blog entry is possible the most insightful and well-written EVER. Sound words, Mr. Chris, sound words.

Am LOVING 2Day, though about to take a break as the talent-vacuum that is Claudia Winkleman is about to be on. I'm sorry, but I can't stand her - her interviews are sycophantic and witless at best. And while I'm on a rant.... Jo Whiley. I don't dislike her at all, but her show is a very, VERY, poor exchange for the excellent Radcliffe & Maconie (sometimes with Noddy Holder) Show - I loved them; their knowledge of and enthusiasm for music of all genres was unequalled.

Still - on the up! - Chris is on after Claudia Winkleman... every cloud, eh?!

Fingers crossed for a safe delivery for the lovely Tasha - Noah will be a FAB big brother for the little 'nun, I bet!

    Keep smiling! Love & hugs,

    good morning all

what a lovely blog to catch up on, hope you all are well.

Caught a little of 2day yesterday - I do need to find the damon albarn (swoon) clips on the website and catch up with him

Didn't really get too involved though as cannot listen to the radio much, and have managed to fit 5 days working in 4, got to love bank holidays. Also Mr bp is directing the local play (shows tonight and tomorrow) so it has been play fever at home - I'm the prompt!

Anyway keep well and hvae a great weekend

    Morning All,

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIN xx

The sun is shining here - whoop whoop! And long may it shine too :)

Hooray that it's Friday, even though I've only been at work for 2 and a half days this week!

Sezza, I know what you mean about keep looking at the clock yesterday. I enjoyed 2Day a lot but you get used to knowing what time it is by what's on the radio and it was a little confusing.

Berni, Glad you had a good time xx

Meant to say "Hi" to Bondy, good to see you xx

Bids, Enjoy your chillaxing weekend xx

I'm not up to much, got to buy a fancy top tomorrow for a 40th Birthday Party next Friday and then on Sunday morning I'm preaching the sermon, which always makes me chuckle to myself.

    Morning Deevs xx

Right best get on, I'm sure I'll be back later.

    Morning all

Bit busy at mo but just popping in to catch up! Such a nice vibe on the blog, following on from the PfT no doubt.

Happy Birthday Lin, hope you have a great day.

I have to say I quite enjoyed most of 2Day that I heard, even Zoe's dance hour, mainly cos there was more music and less of her! I agree though it does mess with your internal clock hearing people out of their normal timeslots.

What did people think of Eng Hump as a guest this morning. He didn't seem to want to engage at all and CLP was doing all the running, or that's how it sounded to me.

    Cheers

I saw Moira, met Vassos & Chris, took a picture of Tash.....as well as pics of Jamie Cullum, Bellowhead, Chris Rea, Tom Jones, Jessie J, Keane and the cast of Jersey Boys!!! It all went by so fast.......sigh..... x

    Morning all

Wish I'd got my washing on the line this morning - it's a perfect drying day today - bright and dry and breezy!

Ali and Andy, I'm glad it's not just me who runs their life by the pips and the features!! Even Gibbs is getting to know that breakfast appears when Moira reads the news after the kiddies!

Berni, Keep floating!! I know what you mean about it all going too quickly - it always does - but, later, even in a year or so, you'll hear a piece of music and you'll be straight back in the 100 Club, glowing gently!

For me, it's Delilah and I'm back at the O2 , belting it out at the Bye Bye Drivetime gig!

Just remembered, I was going to say about Mr Humperdink this morning. I think he is the only Friday guest who's been on that I know as little about now as I did before

I agree with Andy (I think) It certainly appeared that he was there to promote the record/eurowhotsits not because he had any interest

And I cennot get over how stupid his name is!

    Sezza xx

  • Comment number 73.

    Hello Sezza

I think you're right, there was as little input from him as he could get away with. Even the Dean Martin story, which sounded like the start of a good tale, fizzled out to nothing.

Whether he didn't want to be seen to be playing on the people he's known I don't know, but definitely one of the poorest Friday guests so far.

Engelbert Humperdinck, name taken from a 19th century composer, has always been a poor man's Tom Jones.

  • Comment number 75.

That's right MBD, he once had the same manager as Tom Jones and the 19th century composer wrote the Hansel & Gretal opera.

His first success was in Belgium in 1966 in the annual Knokke contest and he got into the Belgium charts with Dommage Dommage.

Evening all, from an equally soggy Edinburgh.

First off, thank you to those who wished me a happy birthday on the other side on Wednesday. I had a fab day touring Glencoe, Loch Ness, and the Highlands. The weather was great too, unlike the next day, when it rained constantly for about 24 hours!

Talking of Thursday, I only caught a small bit of 2 Day, will have to catch up. I tried to listen to Ken Bruce in Orkney, but it was the last couple of minutes and his handover to Simon?!? Will try again.

Hope everyone is enjoying their Friday evening.

PS Happy Birthday girlracer!! All the best people have their birthdays this week...

On one occasion EH was asked whet his favourite drink was. He wanted to say Dom Perignon, but TJ had already said that was his favourite so he chose Benedictine.

The irony is that TJ is a beer man, well he is Welsh!

  • Comment number 81.

I heard a little from the show from 8.40...

Nope, he didn't want to be there, which made CLP anxious and hyper...

He was also with the same manager as Gilbert O'Sullivan and Tom Jones originally (also not a proper name, but then Tom jomes isn't either) so they were all in competition together!! lol

    Our victory, probably their loss!!

Engelbert has his own pub, The Red Fox, in his house in Leicester and likes to drink English beer but is sticking to red wine until after the Eurovision contest.

    Hi everyone:

I didn't get the chance to pop in yesterday - just crazy stuff at work.

Lin: sorry I missed your birthday. Hope you had a lovely day. xx

Debs: re: the kitchen party - Crumpy was saying the other day that if MrS can't make it through to Edinburgh for the Blog Meet, the bloggers will just jump in taxis, and come to us! I did explain it is a small fortune for a taxi from Edinburgh to Glasgow! I don't think we will be having a Bloggers Kitchen Party this time around, but, hey, perhaps next year?! I am really hoping MrS will make the Meet - bless him, his foot is really playing up. A friend has suggested a deep foot massage may help - anyone had such a thing?

I have been catching up with some of 2DAY - wow, just fantastic. The highlight for me is Will Young singing "hanging on the telephone" - it is simply stunning, and I do love Will, even though I am still annoyed that he dissed AliB's friend at the stage door! Tomorrow will see me spending as much time as possible watching the rest of the clips, and listening to the shows. I know I say it all the time, but really, Radio 2 is the most incredible station - we are so lucky here in the UK that it's ours!

Re: Englebert - I didn't hear him yesterday, will try to listen again at some point. However, I did see him "live" about 4 years ago and unfortunately he was not good - not good at all. Perhaps it was a bad night for him, but from that performance, I would say the chances of him reaching those high notes in the Eurovision song, are nil. Sorry, Eng!

AliB: hope your sermon goes well tomorrow, how I admire you for doing this. xx

Hope everyone has a good Saturday.

Chrissie-has MrS thought abnout acupuncture, a lot of people say it's very good. Hope his foot soon improves.

MBD-I would have attempted the 100 last night but computor says no, it would have taken me all night restarting all the time. I think I will have to call Rent-A-Nerd next week!

    Will this post?
