PARDON?

Post categories:

Dom | 11:16 UK time, Monday, 19 June 2006

DomHello. It's me. Not only am I not in Germany, I now can’t hear anything!

I have wax build-up big style in my left ear and it's horrendous. Not as bad as say a broken arm or fractured elbow but i'd easily liken the pain to child birth. It's not dampening my enjoyment of the World Cup, but it does mean the TV volume's on 83.

This is now starting to affect my work - I can't hear myself properly while i'm making up the weather. I have an appointment at the doctor's but it's not until Wednesday. So, I need your help. I understand that putting a biro full of boiling water in my ear is not a great idea but there must be something else I can do.

I've bought ear drops and they're crap so I 'm taking direct action! Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

I've already had a call from a South African man who claimed initially to be a GP - but on further questioning he conceded he works at a packing factory in Swaffham. He has no medical qualifications.

Thanks in advance...

Dom

You need good old fashioned ear sex to clear this out.

Remedy? Go to the chemist and ask for olive oil drops, worked a treat after 1 day.

As someone else has already suggested, get some Hopi Ear Candles from a health food shop. They're a good homeopathic solution and once you've finished you can open them up and see all the wax they've suck out!

Dom,

You should be careful mate. I had what i thought was the same problem and infact it was a burst ear drum. Either try your local nurse or if you can't get an appointment, go to Accident and Emergency immediatly. Trust me it really is worth it to save your hearing!!! it doesn't hurt and takes about 15 mins to look and clear out.

Good Luck
Don't be scared!!

P.S. Keep up the good work.

Buy some ear candles. They suck all the wax out. Then have your ears syringed (spelt that wrong).

Dom, ive only got one piece of advice...get it cleared quickly!! If not, then youll end up like me...ive just been told that because my ear has been infected for so long, its kinda uncurable as such. I just get thrown a bottle of ear drops every three months...tis very uncomfortable. Though if its like you say, and only a build up of wax, then you can buy a seringe (not like one with a needle mind!) and fill it with tepid water, then scoosh it all into your ear...apparently it works a treat.

Though if its an actual infection you have, until you go to the doctors, keep your ears dry ( i know i just told you to seringe them out with water, but only do that if you really are certain its a build up of wax!)

Either way, i hope they get better!

*Stacey takes no responsibility for any action dom takes on his ear as stacey is not a doctor and is only speaking by experience...thanks ;-)

Depends if you have wet wax or dry wax!

If it's wet get a hair dryer blowing in your ear, eventually the wax will dry out and contract opening the ear up again. It keeps you going while the doctor diagnoses his bottom from his elbow

My tip after spending time in Germany with my children during an occasion where my son hurt his arm - we went to the local hospital and was told in no un certain terms by a lovely German lady 'we either speak a bit of german - or she will not try to speak english'. Later found out she was almost fluent English...moral of the story either learn German (from Comedy Dave) or take Dave. Hope you feel better soon - loving the show out there have a Bratwurst on me! Hi Dom - have you tried asking your local beekeepers for advice? I hear they're hot on wax. Seriously though - the olive oil thing works for me, but you might need to leave it in for a while whilst lying on your side and then squidge around when it's soaked in with some cotton wool. Sounds revolting - but at least you'll be able to hear it!

And good on you making up the weather. To be honest, most of us don't listen to the proper weather forecasters anyway. Rob McElwee's got nothing on you.

The warm olive oil in a pippet will work but you will have to persevere. Just so you know the oil makes the wax expand before it starts breaking up and sometimes this can make it more painful, however that shouldn't last longer than a few days before it starts to feel looser and better. Stick with it Dom and be brave - I feel your pain !!!!

Dom. I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago. I had my ears syringed and it didn't work! So I just waited and eventually my ears began to pop and graudally I could hear again. It lasted for about 12 days and wasn't very nice.

Hope you get it all sorted!

I had the same thing a while ago. I phoned the doctors and got an appointment for 3 days later. I spoke to a friend (who is also a doctor) and they said that it didn't need to be a doctor - one of the nurses at the surgery could do it! I rang the doctors back and got an appointment with the nurse that afternoon. It took 10 minutes and was all sorted.
