LA, Amsterdam, Barcelona and... Grimsby

Post categories:

Dan Walker | 09:10 UK time, Thursday, 25 November 2010

I have been to some amazing places since I started presenting Football Focus. Los Angeles, Amsterdam and Barcelona spring to mind. This week I was asked to go somewhere very special... Grimsby.

Before you Grimsbonians out there get too excited, the visit had little to do with the club. I am sworn to secrecy about the reasons for our trip but let me just say that it was of historical significance and involved some snazzy filming down on the beach.

Cameraman Keith Wade and I had left London at 0745 GMT on Thursday, the day after England's painful pummelling by the French, and picked up producer Stu Hutchison in Watford. Stu has a deep love of the Hornets and mentions them at least 16 times per day in conversation. He is also editing the show this week, so if Focus starts with a montage of , you know why.

danwalker595n.jpgFocus makes the trip up to Grimsby

We eventually arrived on the beach in Grimsby at about 1130, aware that we had to get everything done in a rush so we could catch the train back from Doncaster at about 1500. Now you can't go to without eating fish and chips, so we bought three portions to slay on the spot and a fourth for filming purposes.

We needed a chip cone for the TV bit but making one out of a newspaper is a lot more difficult than it looks. I spent some of my teenage life working in a fast food restaurant but was never taught the art of "coning". My first attempt was particularly poor, with far too much newspaper hanging out at the bottom. By my fourth try, it started to resemble a cone but it lacked the sharp lines you would expect from a professional.

Filming took about 40 minutes so the fish and the chips were freezing cold and covered in sand by the end. Sadly, they still needed nibbling for the purposes of the piece. There were seagulls everywhere, the tide was coming in like a beast and it was about minus 403 degrees. Yet everything went to plan and we had a good laugh.

The stuff on the beach will feature in the opening to this week's Football Focus (´óÏó´«Ã½ One, 1215 GMT), so make sure you do not miss the start.

In other news, it has been a while since I have done a behind-the-scenes video for this blog, so I have remied that. If you have ever fancied a job as a director, editor, production assistant or vision mixer - or you're just nosey - make sure you take a peek.

In order to see this content you need to have both Javascript enabled and Flash installed. Visit µþµþ°äÌý°Â±ð²ú·É¾±²õ±ð for full instructions. If you're reading via RSS, you'll need to visit the blog to access this content.

We also have Jose Mourinho and Roy Keane on this week's Focus. We will hoover up the rest of the week's news, too, and look ahead to the vote to decide the hosts of the 2018 World Cup. The Football Association has given us Daniel Sturridge to speak to given he could be part of the England team in eight years' time.

That got us thinking. Instead of a themed XI this week, we asked , who commentates on England for ´óÏó´«Ã½ TV, to give us his potential XI for the 2018 World Cup. He only had five minutes but his selection is below. It would be good to hear your view.

England 2018: Joe Hart; Micah Richards, Kieran Gibbs, Martin Kelly, Phil Jones; Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere, Josh McEachran, Adam Johnson; Andy Carroll, Daniel Sturridge.

As ever, the best way to follow all the build up to the show is via twitter.com/danwalkerbbc. If you've got a comment about this blog, Guy's team, or Focus itself than just whack it down below.

Intrigued by the historical significance of Grimsby unless it was the last place in Britain to stop making chip cones ;)...a better hint Dan??

England team for 2018 is virtually impossible to pick so far out but we probably wont need to if it's in Spain/Portugal as we wont even qualify!

England 2018: Scott Loach, Phil Jones, Jack Robinson (Liverpool), Chris Smalling, Krystian Pearce, Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere, Tom Cruise, Brooklyn Beckham, Victor Moses, John Cofie (Man U)

  • Comment number 7.

Obviously as an Ipswich fan I have to ask,no Connor Wickham?

    Sir Bobby Robson

  • Comment number 8.

In 2018 Adam Johnson will be 31, Rooney will still only be 32.

Its far more likely that Rooney will still be playing for England than Johnson.

  • Comment number 9.

I'm not meaning to be a Negative Nelly for the sake of it, but by goodness this is a tedious blog. What a 'hoot' to read about fish & chips on Grimsby sea front. How about something a little more mentally challenging for readers in future?

  • Comment number 10.

While Grimsby will inevitably get some stick (and it isn't great), I have a couple of points:

    1. It's better than Hull
    2. We're called Grimbarians.

Weak defence, I know. But it's all I have.

  • Comment number 11.

We also have Jose Mourinho and Roy Keane on this week's Focus.
    ______________________________________

Again,as an Ipswich fan, does our "manager" talk about the club the employs him?Or every other subject under the sun?

    Sir Alf Ramsay

  • Comment number 12.

Also, my 11 would look something like post 2 actually, with either Rodwell or Huddlestone accompanying Wilshere.
If that does as well as it looks (with no hoofball I hope), England would do better, and I would have more respect for them.

  • Comment number 13.

Rooney will be 32 in 2018 so I think he will still be up front, Micah Richards will still not know how to defend, Walcott wont know how to cross and David Beckham will still be claiming he is still fit enough to play for England and that he still hasnt given up hope of another call-up.

    Same old Same old.

  • Comment number 14.

Just to be really picky, the "seafront" is in Cleethorpes not Grimsby, that's certainly what the pictures look like.

  • Comment number 15.

del04, how do you reckon Grimsby's better than 'Ull. I thought people from Grimsby were called Cod 'eads

  • Comment number 16.

Who thinks that Rooney will still be a top level player in 2018? I don't. I reckon his career through indiscipline, greed and injuries will have become more a front page story than a back page story. Best and Gascoigne come to mind!

Good point about Johnson being 31 by then though. He, like some others, are still treated like spring chickens but he is already marching into his 20's!

  • Comment number 17.

Adam Johnson will be pushing 31 by the time the 2018 World Cup comes round! I doubt, somehow, that he'll still be quite the potent threat by that stage in his career, although I suppose Ryan Giggs managed it. We can reconvene here in 8 years to discuss it.

....................Butland (he's very good in Football Manager)

    Walker......Jones......Caulker......Gibbs

    ...........Rodwell.......McEachran

    Wilshere........Shelvey..........Moses

    ..................Wickham

  • Comment number 18.

Wickham, Sturridge, Carroll, Rooney, Welbeck - it's very difficult to say who will make it and who won't. They might all be world class in 2018, they might all be playing in the Championship.

Rodwell, McEachran, Wilshere, Shelvey all promising for the midfield.

The thing to remember is that even the youngest players suggested here will be 24/25 come 2018. We are likely to have a 18-21 year old or 2 who we won't even know exists right now. Somewhere there will be a 10 year old trading stickers in a playground who could win us the World Cup.

  • Comment number 19.

No Marc Albrighton, Fabian Delph or Ciaran Clark? I may be a biased Villa fan but I can't believe they haven't been mentioned.

There's always that toddler Aussie that Man U 'bought' on the strength of a DVD. He'll be naturalised by then.

  • Comment number 21.

    Morning all.

Danke schon for your comments so far. Interesting thoughts on the England team suggested by Mr Mowbray. Obviously it's almost impossible to pick the team with any authority this far out but both Connor Wickham and Jack Rodwell were in Guy's initial 16.

Rooney is an interesting one. Will he still be around at 32? For some reason I think he may well have packed his bags by then but I'll be happy to be proved wrong.

Dan #18 you make a good point about ages and I'm sure half the team will be made up of kids coming through now. Still a good talking point though.

Dimmy_Jerkovski #9 nothing wrong with being Negative Nelly big man. As I've said many times before - this blog is about what it's like to present Football Focus and an insight into how things come together.

I know it's not exactly headline news that we are in Grimsby but I'm sure there are some people out there who like to know what's going on (help me out here comrades). If this isn't for you then there is plenty elsewhere on the website to keep you entertained.

Peter Crouch has just agreed to be interviewed this week as well - the show is going to be tightly packed!

Keep them coming and I'll be back soon.

Peter Crouch has just agreed to be interviewed
    -------------------------------------------------------
Being as he's in scoring form, there is no surprise.

May I suggest asking him about the issue with Carroll and whether people who get up to no good in their private lives should represent England? (nudge, nudge)

He should take it on the chin. Most of us can remember his classic Soccer Am interview.

Q - what would you be if you weren't a footballer

    A - a virgin

  • Comment number 24.

Delph has been injured all season........but come on Villa has the best crop of yougsters coming through. Some the London media havent even heard of yet!!

WHAT PART OF MANDATORY WAIT THEN LOOK DOES HE NOT UNDERSTAND,

GET THE LURPACK, TIME TO TEACH HIM A LESSON.

Dan, wear more blazers, you would look good in a blazer.

    Oh and for the record

    Dooo doooo do do do.

Its a good tune so use it.

Hart, Clyne, Smalling, Jones, Gibbs, Albrighton, Wilshere, Henderson, Jarvis, Welbeck, Rooney.

  • Comment number 26.

Not sure about the 2018 England XI, but i'm pretty sure everyone will be campaigning for David Beckham to be playing!

There are plenty of youngsters out there who are more than good enough, but will they get a game at a high level? If not, they might go abroad or to a lower league to ply their trade.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - look at the youngsters that Brazil, Argentina, Holland, Spain and Germany are producing. We are MILES behind them. The sooner we invest in youth the better.

How about the worst England XI of all time? Surely Carlton Palmer has to be in there somewhere. :-)

    pick your faults?

  • Comment number 28.

    Hart

    Richards - Smalling - Kelly - Gibbs

    Huddlestone - Rodwell

    Moses - Wilshere - Johnson/Rooney

    Carroll

but this is almost pointless debating. After all, the world is going to end in 2012....

  • Comment number 29.

There will have to be a place for Rodwell and also Welbeck i'm afraid.

I agree with Cleverley and have to say that patience with Walcott will have run thin by 2016, let alone 2018.

I'm sure the england manager of that time will also somehow find a place for SWP in their squad, just to please me!!

Wilshere you'd think will be the key. However, there is likely to be a 20 year old in there who will be just 12 years of age at the moment.

Hart should keep the sticks for the next 10 years. But I think the international careers of Carroll, Albrighton and Johnson will have been and gone by then.

Rooney wil be in the squad - aged 32.

    Gomez Adams

  • Comment number 30.

No Gary Cahill? Wants he signs for one of the Sky 4 (This January or next summer) he will be in England's first team for the next 10 years at least guaranteed!

  • Comment number 31.

    ------------------ Hart ----------------

    ---- Kelly - Dawson - Rodwell - Gibbs ----

    Walcott - Cattermole - Wilshere - Johnson

    ------------- Carroll - Rooney -----------

    Question for Crouch:

'For a big man does Abby think you have a good touch?'

ps. I hope this post doesn't get moderated because I put Dawson in the team.

  • Comment number 32.

My prospective team for 2018, aside from the current unknowns.

    Hart

Richards Jones Eric Dier (S Lisbon) Gibbs

    McEachran

    Rodwell Wilshere Henderson

    Rooney

    Wickham

The likes of Fielding, Smalling, Kelly, Shelvey, Huddlestone, Walcott, Carroll, Welbeck and Benik Afobe (Arsenal) may also be in the mix.

As for Victor Moses, I feel that he is overhyped...an average Premiership at best. It'd be interesting to know the odds of Brooklyn Beckham being involved?! They must already exist on Ladbrokes, WH or somewhere.

  • Comment number 33.

There will not be an England squad for 2018 as England wont qualify! However if we get there by default (Win the hosting rights) then I suspect there will be 21 nobodies, Wayne Rooney (Who will be hyped up to win the World Cup, and then do nothing - on the pitch at least!) and most likely a silver haired and bearded David Beckham as player manager and merchandising hero!

Still after another embarrasing showing there will be lot's of talk of a 'root and branch' re structure of English football, which will be forgotten as soon as the first game of the 'greed is good league' kicks off.

  • Comment number 34.

I don't know what the England team in 2018 will look like, but I hope it won't be a 4-4-2, as many of the posters above are suggesting! I like the look of some of the midfield diamonds being suggested though.

as far as i'm aware Grimsby doesnt have a beach or a football ground(JUST CODHEADS)where you are is Cleethorpes.surely your researchers should have known that!

  • Comment number 36.

    hello

before I am set upon by a gaggle of Cleethorpites... there was a line in the blog about the fact that the beach is not in Grimsby but it seems to have disappeared in the 'editoiral process'.

I am aware of the local geography brothers and sisters... fear not.

Personally i'm backing Carlton Palmer to make a comeback in 2018!

    See you soon

havnt heard anyone overhyping this lad at all to be honest, he hasnt seen much 1st team football so its hard to judge.

This goes for numerous players mentioned such as Delph, an unknown quantity really and hard to pick in a squad when he isnt getting any games (understand down to injurmy mostly)

All you English are so moody and doom and gloom.......wheres all the enthusiasm? wont qualify etc etc

no wonder your own team fails so much with fans like this?!

  • Comment number 38.

I understand the clamour for Rodwell but Delph? Can't see it myself.

Impressed with Scott Dann but not really seen enough of him in the flesh to say yes or no.

    Keep the faith.

    Hi Dan,

Thought you might have picked up on my #6 selection of Tom Cruise from Arsenal alongside Brooklyn Beckham plus having Moses up front prophecises good things alongside John Cofie (The Green Mile)?

You haven't given us much to go on with Grimsby apart from the chips - is it the 150th anniversary of Britains' first chippie by any chance? - am I 'skating' on thin-ice, do I need to 'fry' a bit harder - their footie club has taken a 'battering' in recent years...'plaice' your bets on what it could be ;) Hope to 'cod' you're not talking 'pollocks'...tartar sauce for now.

  • Comment number 40.

I would imagine whatever team will be picked for 2018 will be on the basis of form and fitness. Any from the following.

Green, G johnson, Terry, Rio, Cashly, Stevie G, Lamps, Joe Cole, Crouch, Defoe and Rooney. Only definite start would be SWP.

    Why oh why.

  • Comment number 41.

    Hey Dan;

Post 36 deals with most of my points, and we are Grimbarians from Grimsby surely?

More clues please; Is the Grimsby footage to do with Watford then? Graham Taylor? Or is that a red herring......... arggh

    Afternoon Dan,

I think the future England team and Grimsby have been covered, so on to that head shot of yours on the top right of the page.

It needs replacing, it looks like someone paper machéd your head, or a clay-motion model. Like someone sliced off a Dan face and put it on.

    Good luck.

    Dear Sir Walker.

Thank you once again for your blog. It reads somewhat like the sort of story I used to write in and exercise book at school when I was about 7 (i.e. Firstly I woke up. Then I got out of bed. Then I went downstairs. Then I had breakfast. I had coco pops and a cup of tea for breakfast.....)

I note with interest that you are interviewing Peter "Crouchie" Crouch. Could you ask him the following question: "Dear Sir, why did you and your England colleagues fair so badly in the First Ashes Test today and were you ashamed to get out for a golden duck to a bowler as limited as Pete Siddle? Why did you refer an obviously plum decision and thus waste one of England's valuable (potential) "lives"?"

As for your 2018 England squad. Where is Jack Payne?

    Yours mercurially

Having Roy Keane on the show has reminded me about something. The Norwich v Ipswich match, known in these parts as the East Anglian Derby, coming up on Sunday will be the first for both Keane and manager Paul Lambert. It would be nice to have a mention please.

Can see him being another Sonny Pike though!

  • Comment number 51.

One name to remember is Matty Phillips, currently with Blackpool and terrorising defenders whenever he plays. He is 18 and sadly destined for a bigger club than us. He has the temperant and more talent than you can shake a stick at.

    One to watch.

  • Comment number 52.

Someone beat me to it suggesting that Beckham will probably be manager come 2018. I think he'd be willing to sacrifice one of his 23 just so he can name himself just so he can come on if we get a free kick just outside the box.

Dan, what's your thoughts on who should host the 2018/2022 world cups? I'm not that fussed about having it here. I personally want to see Russia get 2018 and Qatar 2022.

Oh and here's a link you might find useful on your next trip to the seaside.

I have no doubt that there will be a few primary school kids out there who may not start in 2018, but will be integral parts of the squad, that's if we make it to the WC, let's hope we win the bid to make sure.

  • Comment number 54.

One name I haven't seen mentioned, unsuprisingly I suppose, is Rochdale's Craig Dawson. Recently signed for West Brom, but back at Dale on loan straight away and still impressing. I know many will dismiss him due to his level of football, but worth keeping an eye on I think.

  • Comment number 55.

I can't help but feel that the England team of 2018 will be pretty much unknown to us. After the final humiliation of the "Golden Generation" in the Euro's 2012, followed by a lacklustre performance at Brazil 2014 we'll see a manager (most likely some Italian intent on playing a reserved 4-4-2 defensive formation, who has been installed after yet another management flop) go for youth like the Germans did this year. There of course will be a place there for Wilshere, but beyond that, who knows who will emerge!

  • Comment number 56.

Alex Oxlade Chamberlain. His potential is staggering. As a southampton fan I wasn't even this excited with the likes of Theo and Bale. Honestly, take a look and prove me wrong but i'm sure he is a future international without any doubt.

    Afternoon Dan,
Good blog as always. Could I ask who you / everyone think will be the manager? I notice Guy Mowbray ducked the question when you asked him. I think by 2018 Harry Redknapp will have resigned, after taking over from Capello after the weight of media negativity forced him out post Euro 2012. Then after a wonderfully exciting qualifying campaign the media - having inevitably got bored of Harry and slaughtered yet another goose who's laid a golden egg - will clamour for Shearer to get off the sofa/golf course and use his extensive knowledge from his time at Newcastle to lead England to...

  • Comment number 59.

As these lineups are mostly garnered from the love of Football Manager 2011, can anyone confirm or deny if Premierleague managers use this game as a tool for potential signings???

As a scotsman i dont care about the line up for 2018 as you will fail as usual with the pressure of the media hype mentioning 1966 about 1Million times before the opening ceremony! Dont worry scotland wont even qualify for it as we at least know we are crap!!

but my line up for the interested...

    4-4-2

    1.Butland (GK)
    2. Tom Cruise
    3. Jake Robinson
    4. Jack Rodwell
    5. Scott Dann
    6. Tom Huddlestone
    7. Alex Chamberlain
    8. Jack Wilshere
    9. Harry Kane
    10.Connor Wickham
    11. Scott Sinclair

-- Rooney will have caught a STD from his illicit affiars by then --

  • Comment number 60.

    GK - Joe Hart

    RB - Micah Richards
    LB - Kieran Gibbs
    CB - Phil Jones
CB - Jack Rodwell (Expected to become an excellent ball playing Centre Back)

RM - Theo Walcott (Still on the wing)
    LM - Tom Cleverley
    CM - Jack Wilshire
    CM - Josh McEachran

CF - Wayne Rooney (Still going strong)
    CF - Andy Carroll

Bringing home the World Cup, probably with Harry Redknapp in charge.

I'm sorry Mike but ask any Evertonian, or anybody who has seen this lad play enough. He will be an attacking midfield player. He has too much ability going forward.

He has been mooted as a CB because of his height, but his is extremely weak in the air for his size and will never make a centre back. Watch this space, he will be a double figures a season midfield player.

Coming late to the party today...

One thing I was wondering is whether some of the better, more skilful, and technical young England players will have been kicked out of the game by 2018. You see it with a number of players who display great skills, and often at pace too, who when confronted with a slower, perhaps less gifted player, will suffer numerous late/heavy tackles. This has happened a number of times to Arsenal players - I sometimes cringe when I see Wilshere charging forward because I expect any moment that someone will come in and put a stop to his run.

The hope is that these players will develop a bit more physical toughness to sustain some of these heavier challenges as England needs considerably more technically gifted players if they are to harbour credible ambitions of challenging for honours at International level.

With 2018 still over 7 years away you could still potentially see a youngster currently unknown making a case for inclusion, a la Walcott a few years ago, albeit the fact he never got to play.

On another note, the photo of fish and chips is damned tempting on a freezing cold evening! If only someone would go out and get me a portion.

PS. what do you think about the Scottish referees standing up for themselves and going on strike this weekend? Would it be worth asking an English refereeing representative for their opinion, and how they feel they are treated south of the border? Do you think Real Madrid were up to monkey business last night with those sending off's?

I should have added... I assume your interview with Mourinho was recorded before last night? Its El Classico time again I think so I guess your interview will have focussed on that...

Great video blog, very interesting. I'm a media student, graduate this summer, and have used a TV studio in my studies...we only had three screens to edit with and that was hard enough! They do a fantastic job up there.

Speaking of which, if you ever need someone to do a job up there, let me know!

Joe Hart; Micah Richards, Kieran Gibbs, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones; Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere, Josh McEachran, Jack Rodwell, Adam Johnson; Andy Carroll.

Similaritiesbut defo have to have Smalling and Rodwell in there!

There's a certain show about technology on Channel 5 that featured this week a section about using a high street SLR HD Stills camera that allows you to film in HD, and has been used for programmes like 24, that might be of interest to you. Repeated on Saturday...

Dan, a question about your beloved Crawley. I see they've managed to sign Bell-Baggie from Reading on loan until January, to add to an already talented squad at that level. And you are in a very good position in the Conference, and probably should gain promotion. (and there is absolutely no envy at having financial clout of that magnitude ;) )

But given the amount of money spent so far, do you fear for the future if the dream doesn't happen and the club fails to go up? You're hardly getting stellar crowds (1331 for the 7-0 win over Altrincham)

The 2018 England squad will have three current Manchester United players minimum. Chris Smalling, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck. Considering Smalling has already been called into the England squad and Welbeck has been touted for a call up in the not to distant future I'm amazed they seem to have been ignored by the masses.

Great blog as usual Dan. Cracking video too, great little insight!

It's time to forget about the last 15 years guys, the last 50 in fact.

We need to start again, from top to bottom with English football. Money (not to mention FIFA) is destroying the game that we all love and something drastic (I don't know what) needs to be done sooner rather and later to save it.

For all you guys slating our chances of qualifying for 2018 you are all a disgrace. English football is famous for it's fans, the most passionate and loyal in the world, and comments like that not only tarnish our proud reputation, but demoralise other fans, players and the English footballing community.

Football is about believing, and that's what we have to start doing if we have a hope in hell of tasting glory again.

Wot 2018 and STILL no Kevin Davies???

England haven't even qualified for the 2018 World Cup/Been awarded to host the event. Its ridiculous to even suggest a squad! Here in Scotland, we'd become the laughing stock of World Football if we did this. But i guess if the Englidh did it, its fine........

Yes it must be said Dan from your pictures you're actually in Cleethorpes and not Grimsby, and if you wanted to enjoy your fish and chips you should have gone to Steels and eaten them on a plate in what feels like an old ladys front room. The snap of you sat on the wall is officially the coldest place in Britain and temperatures have been known to drop to minus 409 degrees, not minus 403 as stated.

My name is Michael Caine, and I am a nosey neighbour.

Do you think one of the "big" teams will finally stake a claim during December to be the main contender for the title this season, or do you think they will continue to be pegged back by the other teams? Man Utd could be the ones who keep going with their draws intersperced with the occasional win, while Chelsea, Arsenal, et al continue to lose "winnable" games.

Interesting posts. I hope England win the bid to host 2018 WC and we might see young Gunners leading the team out to Wembley ground in traditional England Whites.

Gibbs, Walcott, Wilshere - definete starters.

Noone(Plymouth)will win the premier league this season. The big 4 will all finish 5th with Port Vale taking the Champions League position available(down to 1 CL place as punishment for Panorama telling such awful lies about FIFA officials taking a bung).Fergie will reveal that it is indeed him carrying Wenger's love child as Sarah Palin stands tall with her North Korean allies.

They'll be a little bit long in the tooth but like barnacle boy and mermaid man (scholes and giggs) i think the following line-up will still cut the mustard:

    Tomlinson
    Yates
    McCombe
    Owen
    Taylor
    Loft
    Taylor
    Dodds
    Roberts
    M Richards

He nearly soiled himself he said he was laughing so hard, he had Kenco coming out of his nostrils and that made me laugh... But my nostrils were clear...

Honestly Dan, its not to much to ask for your researches to get their facts right, apart from once having the best fishing fleet in the world, the only team to play all the matches away from home, and the final insult to call us Codheads, HARRY HADDOCK is the name and proud of it. Not a mention of the people of Grimsby who are the salt of the Earth

#94 he's right about the football bit, Grimsby play just over the divide between Grimsby and Cleethorpes so technically are Cleethorpes team. The fishing fleet bit might be right too. Not sure about the Harry Haddock bit, I'm a Sheffielder here on holiday for a few years.
