Dan Walker | 08:42 UK time, Wednesday, 20 April 2011

As I approached the door to the Lennon suite at the Hard Days Night Hotel in Liverpool the air was thick with guitar strumming occasionally punctuated by the unmistakable tones of one of the Gallagher brothers.

I knocked on the door and listened to the music getting closer... it opened "Aright kid. Getin eor. I've seen you on tele man". "I'm also aware of your work," I responded.

The suite's main room had a giant white piano at one end and an enormous black leather sofa at the other in front of a picture of the Fab 4. "They inspire me man," Liam said as he mentioned his band - - had been playing in Nottingham the night before.

"I missed Citeh man but I heard they were bobbins". His team had lost three-nil at Liverpool and Liam wasn't happy. "I can't work Mancini out man. We need Mourinho... he'd be mega".

We chatted while the crew set up for our Football Focus interview. His agent, Steve, reminded me that this was the first football interview Liam had done. "I normally let our kid do the talking," interjected the guitar strummer.

I'd interviewed Noel and the rest of Oasis when they were at the peak of their powers in 2000. I remember arriving at the record company HQ in London and being introduced to the band - everyone except Liam. "His head's gone man. He's not coming," said Noel.

I'm not sure whose head has gone this time but it's safe to say the brothers are currently not seeing eye to eye. He did mention his sibling briefly in the six minutes we ran on Saturday and you can see the full interview here.

We've had plenty of comments and emails about the interview since Saturday - the vast majority of them being positive. Some asked why we would even want to speak to him but I think he's one of those people who you listen to even if you know what he says will make you angry.

He certainly plays up to the image of a rockstar but he was much wittier than I expected. You don't (as he suggested in the interview) to be offended by some of his language but he has a good sense of humour and a sharp tongue.

Some people suggested I looked a little scared during the interview which I find a bizarre. I like interviewing people who make you work for the answers and a bit of confrontation goes a long way to making something watchable. I also maintain that there is nothing wrong with the occasional tucked shirt! Having said that, I do take the point of the guy who tweeted me to say that if you're going to interview a style guru, with the hottest clothing line on the high street, you might want to iron your shirt!

Mark Woodward, the producer, did have to spend quite a bit of time editing out the choice language and there were some things Liam said - and did - that we couldn't put out even on a post-watershed version of Focus.

That said, I thought his opinions on City, Mancini, United, Rooney and football in general were well worth the airtime and, even if you're Gary Neville's biggest fan, his take on the former Manchester United defender brought a little smile to most faces.

Once the interview was over Liam had another dig at my shirt before saying he might bump into me at Wembley on Saturday. We didn't see each other at the Manchester derby but I'm sure he enjoyed himself.

Before we left I asked him for a picture for the blog. "Don't do that rock & roll face," I said "otherwise I'll look like the school prefect sitting next to the cool kid." "You do your face, I'll do mine," he replied. Sadly he did produce the rock & roll face leaving me to look
like a slightly over-medicated buffoon.

Liam Gallagher and Dan Walker

Say cheese... Smiling for the camera is not obligatory for rock stars

Mr Gallagher features again on the show this week, with some rather interesting Premier League Predictions. He also has some for the man he's talking on, so definitely worth a watch at our earlier time of 1145 BST.

I was also mightily impressed with Danny Higginbotham on the sofa last Saturday and I'm sure he just as much as the bloke with the guitar.

This week we are live in Cardiff once again for the build up to Cardiff v QPR game. I'm actually doing Focus and then staying on to do the live Match of the Day. I need to check there is enough time inbetween programmes for me to destroy some cake.

If you have any questions about the Gallagher interview, any observations about the show or general comments or queries then chuck them down and I'll get back to you.

As ever, you can follow Football Focus by finding me on Twitter at

I wonder if him and Damon Albarn get on these days...
I still enjoy many of the songs that came out of that era, it's easy to get nostalgic about what you were up to back then.

What would be your cake of choice when you've got the problem of needing to get something down your gullet in double quick time without risking indigestion, and crumbs down your shirt? If you're going to be in front of the camera for quite a while then you need something fairly filling too... Time for lunch!

  • Comment number 15.

He's never been the sharpest tool in the box, thats why his brother kept him away from as many interviews as possible .... his football opinions are typical of bitter City fans. Not really an eloquent exponent of the beautiful game is he ? Was it really worth an interview ?

Status Quo for the 90's ... LMAO ... except they found an extra chord or two and "adopted" the Beatles back catalogue.

    Mad Ferret indeed.

  • Comment number 16.

How can people say that this man is not entertaining and has been for years. Get a sense of humour people or do you want your rock stars to all be like Bono or Mr Martin. The only thing wrong with Liam is that he's a City fan.

  • Comment number 17.

Looks a bit like MJ to me...

  • Comment number 18.

He just makes me laugh. Always did. In a good way.

    It's like a caricature.

  • Comment number 19.

Whether you like Liam or not, at least he isn't bland. Oasis did capture something in the 90's, if only a Uk reaction to the American bands of the time (Nirvana etc) that were clearly better. That said, I saw Oasis a few times and enjoyed it. It was Liam that told me that Sparky was joining Chelsea in the summer of '95!

Still, he likes football and has been a Man City fan a long time. I just wonder if they will slip up for 4th. The best thing they have going for them is that Spurs have a harder run in.

  • Comment number 20.

I like watching and listening to interviews with Liam. Both he and Noel have a good sense of humour which always makes for memorable and often very entertaining interviews.

I appreciate that some people will always think of Liam as a hooligan, but I like the fact that he's genuine - he says what he thinks and does what he wants, not what some PR man thinks would be good for his image.

    @ #6

Surprised to see my comment removed considering it was a expletive free opinion. Afterall, the interview with Gallagher is just canvassing his opinions on everything so I can't see why it's one rule for him to release opinions of individuals into the public domain via the ´óÏó´«Ã½ and another for me to do so.

My original post will follow this:

  • Comment number 23.

I find Liam to be a curious fellow- he clearly has fraternal and inferiority issues which manifest themselves in an aggressive fashion. Some of his comments would suggest his suffers from delusional paranoia as well as a multitude of other mental issues.

Either that or he’s just a tool.

    Noel Gallagher

  • Comment number 24.

Love or hate him he does talk some sense. And despite clearly hating Man Utd he at least has the decency and honesty to admit that they deserve their success and have a quality manager.
I think, although he wouldn't admit it, its all quite tongue in cheek. He just plays up to the character he has created for himself.

On another note i saw Beady Eye on Monday and they are much more of a Beatles rip off than Oasis ever were! They still put on a good show though

Never did like Oasis' lumpen prole 3 chord dull repetitive racket, but give Liam his due - I bet no-one thought he'd be capable of running a band without Noel, although it has to be said that "Millionnaire" is the biggest Beatles rip off since....Oasis! Ironic that he does the interview in the Hard Day's Night hotel.
As for his footy opinions, they're no more relevant than yours or mine, but at least he gives somewhat unexpected credit to Fergie and his team. Citeh will scrape 4th btw, and lose to Stoke in the Cup Final.

SAF will say nothing of course, not to distribute hope but what I know is when United faces Chelsea they'll be playing their 11th match in 5 weeks and one day. You might walk all over us. She's electric, "and I need more time" the reason for this need for more time is never explained.

"You're my Wonderwall" - a made up word, but one that rhymes with the words After all. In no way does it explain how being a wonderwall is "gonna save him".

Good interview Dan. Interviewing any star must be pretty intimidating, but especially someone like Liam who is bullish to say the least. But you handled it well in my opinion.

Great Interview. Always loved Liam, Oasis and there couldnt give a damn attitude, so refreshing to as someone said the boring Mr Martin. Cant understand people who say Oasis are a Beatles rip off. When by both Liam & Noels admission they aways said if you wanna be the best copy the best. Best advice you can offer in my opinion. Oasis always tried to be like Oasis so by saying they were a Beatles rip off is the highest accolade you could wish for!

Nobody wants to bring up the fixture which has become the shame and humiliation of British football. Obviously a good proportion of both sets of fans would like to enjoy the game peacefully, and my heart goes out to them, but it's the pointless bigotry, violence and hatred which are seen by the world.

Hope they can resolve the conflict, but I won't hold my breath.

Indeed. There is only 'passion' in those games because of the numbskulls that perpetuate the old nonsense.

People make noises about sorting it out but underneath they know that the games become nothing without it.

I must say, the Scottish plan to make their game better made me laugh as well. How on earth they expect to be able to reach some of the stated objectives is beyond me.

  • Comment number 69.

    # 66 I'm sorry but it's this overreaction to certain elements of this game which overshadow the game.. "the shame and humiliation of British football" you will see more violence at a Birmingham V Villa game and thats not even going into other rivalries such as the Manchester derby or Hearts v Hibs..

The supposed 'shame game' consisted of a couple of sendings off and a manager and a coach being separated at full time because of an argument..again blown out of proportion because one of these guys was Neil Lennon.

I go to all the games and have been to Ibrox, Celtic Park and Hampden for the past 10 years and I have witnessed no violence. I am sure the same cant be said about other rivalries.

Getting back to my point it is a bank holiday weekend and the last derby of the season is about to be played which could go a long way in deciding where the Scottish title ends.. and its not even a topic mentioned no matter what has happened outside of the football side of it.

  • Comment number 73.

It puzzles me why people get so worked up about Oasis' ripping off the Beatles and their lyrics appearing to make no sense.

I love the Beatles and love Oasis probably BECAUSE they try to rip them off. No one has a go at Eric Clapton for ripping off the blues, i.e. Crossroads and Crossroad Blues by Robert Johnson.

The Beatles themselves admitted to ripping off American black music. The only difference I can see is that Oasis, particularly Noel, has always been upfront about his references.

Having a go at lyrics - what's that all about? - since when did all lyrics have to have meaning? What does 'I am the Walrus' mean or 'Stairway to Heaven'? - who cares, really, they are just great songs.

  • Comment number 74.

    # 70 Yes there is still that element there with some of the fans on both sides.. but only that.. an element. As a derby and football fixture it still has more than enough passion and relevance without these unwelcome additions.

  • Comment number 75.

    # 69

Mikey, I wouldn't disagree with you. The bigotry and violence in any rivalry is something to rue. The situation in Glasgow however is unique in that the divide is a political and religious one too, which makes it headline news.

You can't blame Dan for not going near this one. We can discuss it freely, but he has to worry about the fall out from his bosses for any comments he makes.

Which still was never revealed, but should every lyric make sense??

The last derby of the season between Rangers and Celtic ALWAYS has a huge bearing on where the title ends up. That's the problem. The repetitiveness of the fixture and the familiarity of the situation means it is not really very newsworthy.

Nor by the way is an interview with Liam Gallagher. This should be a football blog featuring football people not a free publicity opportunity for a flawed celebrity.

  • Comment number 82.

I love all these comments aimed at Oasis' ability to 'rip off The Beatles' and to only have 'Three Chords'. Oasis took the 90's by the scruff of the neck and made it they're own. When music was terrible. Granted, some of the songs in recent times are very Beatles based, clearly seen on Beady Eye's new record. However, songs like 'Live Forever' 'Wonderwall' and 'Supersonic' 'Slide Away' can not really be classed as the 'Beatles back catalogue' these titles alone are some of the best popular songs this country has ever produced. Oasis, never claim to be totally unique, but they are unique in they're attitude, in the 90's it was their swagger and confidence that propelled through they're music. For that reason it is an insult to call them the 'Status Quo of the 90's' real music fans know that Oasis as a band were as tight and well drilled as any other band thats ever been around.

Great interview Dan, (already given you those plaudits via twitter ;).

Liam Gallagher is the equivalent of Marmite and for me he falls into the category of 'love it'.

His interviews are always entertaining and the one's who find him irritating and offensive are the people who were offended by Rooney's verbal attack on the camera a few weeks ago, (a.k.a sebastien's).

As a red (manc) I surprisingly found myself chuckling at his comment on Gary Neville "Gary Neville looks like an Estate Agent".

    Dan-man,
That was a good interview. Thanks.
I find myself in partial agreement with Liam regarding Rooney's camera celebration. Sure, I believe all men should "put away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth" so I'm not saying Rouney's rant was good, even after scoring a hatrick a man distinguishes himself from a boy by his self control;but I do think the response from the FA was more foolish than the orginal action it tried to address.
Had to laugh at his comments about bobbins, estate agent Neville, shirts tucked in and so on.
I agree with prophet_Sam about staying away from sectarian rivalry. Let news reporters give them air-time, rest can stick to footie.
I'd love tobe in Cardiff for the top of the table clash. I have nothing against Norwich or QPR but I do want them both to loose.

Also partially agree with Fabergas rant about Highbury. Need a via media.

Funny how Oasis parrallel the team they support. In the big league in 1994-1996 then discovered they no longer had what it took to be the best.

Attempted to get back into the big time in the early noughties before falling into obscurity through the middle of the decade.

Turned their back on their original home to live somewhere new and different.

Lost their identity and credibility around 2008 and no longer resemble what they once where.

They also both have a fan base who spend too much time talking about the greatness from a bygone era of "What's the story morning glory" and "Colin Bell".

Personally i find Nirvana a little over-hyped - as will always happen when they end earlier than they could have done. But then, I have always been an Oasis fan at heart - cant knock the Masterplan album.
