´óÏó´«Ã½ Electric Proms - Part 3

Mike Harding | 14:32 UK time, Wednesday, 29 October 2008

The 2008 ´óÏó´«Ã½ Electric Proms Maddy Prior & FriendsÌýconcert came from Cecil Sharp House in CamdenTown, the headquarters of the .

Before the show, I was talking to Malcolm Taylor, librarian of the there and Malcolm reckons there's an upsurge in interest amongst young people, more and more of them, he thinks, are coming to the library spurred on by people like , and ...

...to look not just at the revival singers like and , but at the source singers themselves - the singers who rarely get heard nowadays - people like , , and .

As I pointed out in a previous blog, people like Ashley Hutchings, Tim Hart, Martin Carthy and Maddy Prior spent many an hour in the library at Cecil Sharp House delving into the rich musical tradition of these islands. If more and more young people are going to the fountainhead then this is great news, and if the next wave of the folk revival ends up as sparky and as vital as the last lot then we could be in for an interesting ride.

Another event being held at Cecil Sharp House is 'A Tribute To Bert' - more about that in my next blog.

You can hear highlights from Maddy Prior & Friends from The Electric Proms on my programme all this week and you can see pictures and video footage from the gig here.
