Damien Barber & Mike Wilson - Under The Influence
, who won best live act at this year's ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 2 Folk Awards, and who also were the ever so brilliant final turn at the same event, are led by a lad called Damien Barber.
I've been a fan of the band for a long time, in my opinion they're one of the most exciting bands on today's music scene.
So I was extremely chuffed this week to pick up the post and find, amongst the assorted
rubbish telling me I've won a Reader's Digest and how to double glaze the
hamster cage, a new CD from and Mike Wilson (of the
Band) that is chock full of nothing but great songs brilliantly sung.
The CD is called and is both a collection of songs that have "influenced" Damien and Mike and is also a tribute to the source singers that they learned the songs from: , , and
others.
I'm really glad that young musicians like Mike and Damien, who are pushing music on
in many other ways, still have their feet rooted very firmly in the tradition and are so keen to show us once again how "a great song is a great song is a great song", as Gertrude Stein once said in the Bothy Folk Club, Southport.
An absolutely superb album which has given me great joy, and as I sit here in the
Yorkshire Dales waiting for yet another "Snow Event" I shall put it on again to
cheer myself up.
