Looking forward to Cambridge Folk Festival...

Mike Harding | 14:16 UK time, Friday, 24 July 2009

I'm looking forward greatly to the end of the month and the Cambridge Folk Festival. I've got a 4 hour train journey to get there but it will be worth it in the end, because there's just so much good stuff going on there.

I love the atmosphere at the festival: friendly and family-orientated it includes all ages from grey haired old timers like me to four year olds with face paint jigging it big in the middle of the field.Ìý
I'm particularly looking forward to seeing this year - one of the best singers and songwriters in the world as far as I'm concerned, and as I've said again and again, his song The Island is the best song ever about the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

More than anything though I love him singing traditional songs - ever since his days with he has had the ability to take an old song and somehow key into its very essence so it has a timeless majesty. Arthur McBride and The Lakes of Pontchartrain - what more can I say.

I'm also looking forward immensely to seeing live. One of my favourite bands, they have the great sense to not take themselves too seriously and yet they are a simply great dance band.

will also find me out front listening - 3 terrific musicians who pretty much walk on water as soloists, when they come together the result is magic.

So if you're going to Cambridge look out for the old hippy with the glasses and mustache, the Green Man teeshirt and the tie-dye baggy pants (that narrows it down to 3,0000) - cos it'll be me.

If you're not going, you can keep across events online on our Cambridge Folk Festival pages. There'll be photos, videos of live performances and blogs as well as tons of other wonderful stuff.
