Barrowing, weeding and brief sunny spells

Joe Swift | 16:34 UK time, Wednesday, 30 April 2008

Wow. Thanks to everyone for the support and positive feedback, really appreciate it.

Since my last blog I've been up to the allotment plenty of times both with and without the family. We spent Sunday afternoon up there, timing it perfectly with the online ´óÏó´«Ã½ 24 hr weather forecast so we arrived just as the rain stopped and had a sunny time and a mini picnic.

Cathy immediately got stuck into the raised beds, going over them for the umpteenth time picking out the weeds and roots. She's far more meticulous than me and fortunately finds it 'therapeutic'.

Stanley barrowed (he loves his barrowing) 15 loads of compost down for use as a mulch on the goji berries (which have starting showing nicely), raspberries, (also doing well) and to stockpile for later. The large pile had been there for about 3 days which is a sure sign that everyone has enough of the free compost as it used to get snapped up in a morning. It's really good stuff. My own green waste and veggie peelings from home in Hackney go directly into it so it's nice to get back what I put in, but I'll be taking any green waste up and sticking it directly into my own compost bin from now on, along with any old newspapers and cardboard.

Connie put in a cabbage that Keith (my allotment neighbour) gave her in her triangle and then put a sweet little bit of net on it to keep the birds off it. Looked a bit like Ena Sharples in a hair net by the end of it all, but with the brassicas you have to 'net it or lose it' I keep being told! Better get some netting quick.

I finished off planting all my potatoes so have 7 varieties on the go. Swift, Duke of York, Pink Fir Apple, Sarpo Una, Sarpo Axona, Desiree and Maris Piper. I had loads of chitted ones left, which I gave away to other plot holders in the true spirit of allotments. Till next time.

Joe
