Another busy week

Joe Swift | 13:14 UK time, Tuesday, 6 May 2008

Well, last week was a pretty busy one: filmed a day at the allotment putting in some bamboo canes for pea and bean supports, and then sowed directly into the ground. The height and structure of the poles instantly made my allotment look like an established plot! On Wednesday, I went up to Berryfields to help out while Monty's away and I have to say the garden looked absolutely stunning. Well done all. The tulips in the long border were doing their thing - the mix of colours was just so vibrant and they combined beautifully with the various zingy euphorbias in the long borders.

It was good to see everyone too. I haven't seen Carol all year, except on the telly, so it was lovely to catch up. I started off a tiny patio garden to reflect how the way that we garden is changing. It's a fact of life that gardens are getting smaller and smaller, so we want to show that you can still make a real garden to reflect the seasons in the tiniest of spaces. I was back up the allotment on Saturday with my son Stanley, putting in some of the plants Carol and Alys gave us, and then on Sunday, Cathy, the kids and my mother-in-law (an experienced allotmenteer) went up there to finish off the planting and watering as, of course, I simply had to go to Arsenal's last game of the season to watch the dullest game ever - although we did manage to beat Everton 1-0! I'm off to Malvern this afternoon until the end of the week to film Friday's programme. The weather is supposed to be good and there are very few places I'd rather be than Malvern on a warm sunny day. I'll be up there for the weekend running the stage with James Alexander Sinclair (you probably feel sorry for me already!?), which means Cath will have to keep an eye on the allotment as I'm a little worried about everything drying up. Happy gardening all!
