MK 1 - 0 Labour

Graham Smith | 09:17 UK time, Friday, 25 June 2010

Mebyon Kernow's Stephen Richardson beat Labour's Steve Richards by 187 votes to 77 in yesterday's Illogan parish council by-election. There were no other candidates, so to some extent this could be seen as a straight contest for "anti-coalition" sentiment. Certainly no evidence to support Labour's claim that disillusioned Lib Dems are now heading their way.

Well the Labour party's in complete disarray, there seems to be no clear choice for a leader or even a hint at the ideological direction of the party, i.e. new vs old Labour. Perhaps as a result of this Labour's policies seem to be bemoaning the policies of the coaliton, trying and failing to suggest that their approach was slighty less worse than the new conlib government. Even in their heartlands Labour would struggle to garner support in this state, but here in Cornwall where their policies have failed they have no chance.

In contrast Mebyon Kernow has stuck to it's guns and everyone knows that they stand for more power for Cornwall and a better deal for all the people of Cornwall. Besides this Mebyon Kernow tend to field far more committed individuals in every election, Stephen Richardson is a great example of this. Well done to him.
