Cornwall calling
Fingers crossed as tomorrow I start my first week reading the news on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Cornwall. The last time I read the news for a ´óÏó´«Ã½ local radio station was in 1979 (four years before Radio Cornwall was born.) In those days the job seemed to involve several people, including one whose main function seemed to be to press a button which made a bulb in the studio go from red to green. Scripts were pounded out by typewriter and read from sheets of paper. Some of the studio equipment, which had been salvaged from Broadcasting House, needed time for the valves to warm up.
These days the quest for ever-greater value means that one person does pretty much everything. I think I have three separate studio computers to operate simultaneously, reading the news from a screen (let's hope it doesn't go blank) in between navigating the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s own internal computer system, which lets me find stories on other networks. I watched a colleague doing it last week and it looks pretty scary.
I'm ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Devon’s Graham Smith, blogging on news, views and some fresh insights into West Country life, particularly the way government works locally and nationally.

Semantic suggestion. You know how whoever writes your scripts keeps trying to impose incorrect assimilation of The Celtic Nation And Duchy Of Cornwall into England into each and every story where territorial references come up?
How about instead of regurgitating ' According to a.......survey .... in England, blah blah blah....' ; 'According to a ......survey ..... in England and Wales blah blah blah.....' etc etc etc in various permutations, how about, instead, getting a constitutional grip on your reportage by imposing this more respectful and constitutionally accurate wording: 'According to a .......survey ...... in England and The Duchy Of Cornwall......';'According to a ........survey ....... in England, Wales and The Duchy Of Cornwall......'
Many listeners will look forward to hearing and will welcome that change to more territorially accurate 'News' on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Cornwall(?).
Your response to this VERY constructive suggestion, both here and 'in the field' on air, will be eagerly anticipated...
