Jazz Rage ?
I saw ex-coltrane drummer with his exciting young band playing at London's Pizza on the Park last Sunday, and interviewed him the following day for Radio 3's Jazz Line Up programme. He arrived for the interview still annoyed about having to use a set of borrowed drums for the gig, because of the ongoing security situation at American and UK airports. His musicians have all had to buy hard cases for their instruments, and were worried that baggage handlers might mislay them en route. In addition, having a Muslim name means he is routinely subject to extra scrutiny at security checkpoints, a new trial for someone who converted to Islam in the early 1960's. His mood lifted, however, at the chance to reminisce about life in Philadelphia in the 1950's, when as a young boy he regularly went to 'Jazz Matinees', at which visiting and local jazz luminaries played their nightclub sets for children in the afternoons ! Memories of eating ice-cream and popcorn while watching Miles and Coltrane with Red Garland and company, and of Miles playing a solo then leaving the bandstand to go back to his digs, leaving Coltrane blowing a solo that went on for the next half hour or so !

Rachid Ali is of course well known to avid jazz entusiasts as a leading figure in the 'TORRENTS OF HATE' school of jazz. Ahem..

ER...For how much longer is Rashid Ali going to be "referenced" as "ex-coltrane?"
Coltrane died in 1967 ~ i.e. nearly 40 years ago, HELEN! It's the same as when YOU continue to ask McCoy Tyner, "Just what was it like playing with Coltrane...Mmmm, that must of been really amazing?"
AND RIGHTLY MCCOY GOES STRAIGHT TO SLEEP! ["Hey, wake me when she's gone"]...AS DO WE ALL!
Not only is this booooooooooooooooring and lazy interviewing, its also surely offensive to the musicians..."So, McCoy, you haven't made a decent album in 40 almost years or at least one I've heard, SO, TELL US ABOUT COLTRANE AGAIN, AGAIN, AGAIN ?"
Helen is NOT alone in this

Yass yass I hear what you's sayin' Bluesnik, man.
I'd sure be interested to HEAR Rachied Ali TALK about his OWN MUSICAL CONCEPTION & what he's been doing since 1967 (& for godssakes, the CAT'S BEEN PLAYING IN ALL KINDS OF CONTEXTS) rather than the same old 'WOW what was it like playing with Coltrane..' routine.
Torrents Of Hate, man, torrents of hate.
GIVE THE DRUMMER SOME!!!

it seems a bit unfair to pass judgement on an interview you haven't heard yet. I suspect Helen did ask about Ali's current activities (after all, she was at a gig with his new band)...

(just caught up with this nice blog...)
Exciting young band? I guess they were, but it was a slightly disappointing gig. All technically adept but never quite lifted off. Maybe the small crowd had something to do with it. Rashied Ali in his Blakey T-shirt was a sight to see at the kit, though.

now that the interview's been broadcast, a little positive reaction to balance things out...

"I thought Helen Mayhew's interviewing of McCoy Tyner and Rasheed Ali was a delight and extended the coverage into his later period, and insight into the My F T miracle. Loook forward to hearing her interview programme with Ali in full. The coverage is getting there, more time would be good as always."
