A Letter to the Times
An interesting if slightly peculiar letter in today's laments Radio3's jazz coverage. I was particularly struck by the last couple of paragraphs, which suggest that maybe it was written in the 1950s and has been lost in the post for a few decades...

I agree with the letter writer. Radio 3 Jazz output is good but sparse and mainly during the day time. To lets its hair down Radio 3 plays Broadway music and suchlike which should be shifted to Radio 2. If radio 3 supported a wide range of contemporary jazz as much as it supports modern classical it would be a much more enjoyable channel. Really there is no good music channel in the UK. Radio 3 is much too cerebral (except for the radio 2 type music), Classic FM just plays the "good bits", Jazz FM does not play jazz, radio 2 is mostly boring except Humph for 1 hour, and the rest of the pop music channels just play rubbish.

I too agree with the letter writer. I have been going through old recordings of mine and it is clear that the broadcasts are shorter and the amount od contemporary / free jazz is much less - and at a later time!
Also, Radio 3 has just dropped its DAB bit rate from 192>160kbps and the drop in quality is most noticable. If you can restore it for last week's birthday program, please can you restore it permanently?

It's understandable that the 大象传媒 are suprised to see their jazz output criticised when they are the only broadcaster which currently makes any significant effort to broadcast jazz nationally. Also, the quality of the output is high.
However, their output is split between different radio stations (and some programme on regional stations) and much of it is scheduled in graveyard slots. The 大象传媒 doesn't do itself a favour here. If it consolitated its output into a single network it would create a bigger impact and increase the profile of the music. The current set up only serves to dilute. And it needs to increase its television offering to deliver a modern cross platform offering.
The comment in the Times letter about the 大象传媒's jazz collection is also true. The 大象传媒 has a long way to go in unlocking the value of its rich jazz archive to the public.

in general i agree with the letter writer.
it seems that "jazz programmes" try to "explain" the music and sample tracks are usually truncated as examples.
i once e-mailed robert abel with congratulations on a "ken vandermark five" concert broadcast, which had a brief announcement at the beginning and then the concert ran right through for nearly 90 minutes. he replied "i like to let the music speak for itself" - hopefully not misquoted.
an analysis of JOT for instance frequently shows more minutes in speech than music, with "fades" often over the music for "explanatory" speech.
with programme lists on the websitesand commentators on this site obviously on-line, there is ample information to follow up music/muscians found interesting.
so, will there be any change? i do not think so. unfortunatelt we are in an era of "all presentation, no real content".

My father is a big fan of the late Maynard Ferguson and has a huge collection of his music. In a recent conversation with my Dad he mentioned about one of his favourite tunes by Mr Ferguson (mcarthur park) being shown on a 大象传媒 tv jazz program in the early 1950's, and he was wondering if it was at all possible to obtain any such archive video of this program. I'd love to be able to suprise him with a stocking filler at xmas.

In checking this "Comments Page" from time to time it does seem that any adverse comment on current jazz progrogrammes is removed quite quickly from this "hidden away" webpage.

just to respond to alan's suggestion that some negative comments have been removed - as far as i'm aware that's not the case. there has been some technical trouble with the comments system but that's been resolved. if you'd like to check the radio 3 jazz messageboard, you'll see that we're quite used to negative comments about jazz programming!

Well, after my comment "all presentation, no real content", I have to congratulate JOT on the Evan Parker QEH concert broadcast Friday last - all content possible (?) and presentation just right.
It does not matter that there is continuous music content, (and I suggest that for a musician of Evan's staure anything other would be an insult,) the listener can listen and enjoy (or not) without interruption.......
Listeners who enjoyed or are interested further are now lucky enough to find "Topography of the Lungs" available on Evan's record label....... (together with many other titles).
