Anyone for tennis?
- 1 Jul 08, 01:15 PM
Johnny Minkley came in today to talk video games and to play tennis against Jo on the Nintendo Wii - which he won! Here's his lastest gaming news...
Top Spin 3 (PS3, 360, Wii)
The Top Spin series is the only serious rival to Sega's sublime Virtua Tennis. Where Sega serves up an accessible, arcade-style experience, Top Spin is more of a simulation of the racquet-wielding sport. As a result, particularly on the 360 and PS3 versions, you may find the difficult curve a bit of a shock to the sytem at first.
But persistence with the well-conceived training mode reveals a game with excellent depth and a career mode that lets you create a champion tennis player in whatever style you like. On Wii, again, it's a lot more complicated that Wii Sports, and you have to use the nunchuk with it, but there's certainly more depth for those who find Nintendo's version a bit too simplistic.
Plus, it features real life tennis stars, so however far Andy Murray gets at Wimbledon this year, you can always go for glory against Federer in the game.
The Bourne Conspiracy (PS3, Xbox 360)
You can usually guarantee a big action film will hit cinema screens alongside a videogame adaptation - but it's taken six years and three films before Jason Bourne gets a crack at virtual espionage.
Matt Damon's gone - he didn't want anything to do with the game - but everything else about Conspiracy will be familiar to fans of both the movies and Robert Ludlum's novels. The game follows a predictable third-person stealth-action route with a few twists. Bourne can perform stylish 'Takedowns' on enemies which make use of whatever's around him, be it a vending machine or a rusty pipe. And 'Bourne Instinct' taps into Jase's instinctive ability to perceive details around him, highlighting key people and objects.
It's based roughly on events in the first movie, fleshed out with flashback sequences. Sadly, it's pretty run of the mill stuff, with controls that can prove complicated and clumsy, especially during the shooting sections.
There are some lovely cinematic setpieces, but it ultimately gets pretty repetitive. Bourne fans will doubtless appreciate the attention to detail, but everyone else should try before they buy.
Alone In The Dark (PS3, 360, PC, PS2, Wii)
Last seen in 2001, this survival horror series was the original inspiration for terrifying zombie-fest Resident Evil. Set in and around New York's Central Park, Alone In The Dark serves up a compelling supernatural mystery bursting with good ideas and presented with impressive attention to detail.
Of particular note is the flexibility of the inventory system. Items can be combined to solve puzzles and fight enemies in creative ways. For example, mix a bottle with a cloth, petrol and industrial sticky tape to create the ultimate sticky bomb.
Ultimately, it becomes a victim of its own huge ambition, with complicated controls routinely frustrating in the heat of battle and basic combat a little disappointing. However, taking a cue from the likes of Lost and 24, the game's episodic structure is a brilliant addition, allowing you to skip past difficult parts like a DVD chapter menu. And if you can tolerate the patchy opening, there are some truly memorable moments to experience.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots (PS3)
If you've never played a Metal Gear game before, prepare to be utterly confused. And even if you have, don't expect the final chapter of Solid Snake's story to make that much sense. But do expect to be wowed by a unique and spectacular gaming experience.
This is one for fans of the series, and if you hated the self-importance, navel-gazing and laboured dialogue of previous titles, a game with cutscenes that in some cases last over an hour is unlikely to change your mind.
But there is so much to applaud in this astonishingly ambitious, imaginative, beautiful and artistic title that it would be a terrible shame to miss out on one of the most important releases of recent years. More inspired ideas and dazzling touches than 20 average games, Snake's curtain call is the best PS3-exclusive title yet.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii)
Metal Gear 4 isn't the only new game Solid Snake is starring in. And if you fancy seeing him engage in absurdly over the top, technicoloured scraps with Pikachu, Sonic The Hedgehog and Mario, look no further!
Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a cartoon fighting game, but also Nintendo's open love letter to fans. Classic characters, stages, music, and secrets from right across the company's glittering history and crammed into this manic brawler.
It's simple to pick up and play, but there's plenty of depth for the committed. And with so much content to unlock, plus online play, it'll keep you going for weeks if not months. Superb value for money if you like a good gaming scrap - and who doesn't want to see Mario sticking a big leather boot in Sonic's face?
NEWS:
Rock Band 2
Just as we're getting all excited about Rock Band and the prospect of Guitar Hero World Tour, and along comes the announcement of a sequel to the original full band gaming rock out.
Details are limited right now, but we do know it'll feature upgraded instruments - presumably to compete with the rival World Tour - although the makers insist that older instruments will work with it. Plus, songs will be compatible across versions - so if you buy number 2, you can download songs from the original.
It's released in the US in September but we're still waiting to hear when it will be out here.
Dual Shock III
Out in Japan since last year, UK gamers can finally get their hands on the updated PS3 pad from this Friday, July 4th. Sony controversially removed the rumble feature from the original PS3 pad - which causes the controller to vibrate at relevant moments during gameplay. But after much criticism, they've backed down and come up with a new wireless version that features both rumble and the motion sensing of the original SIXAXIS PS3 pad.
Games are already being adapted to take advantage of the new feature. The RRP isn't cheap at 拢39.99, but shop around and you'll get it for less.
