Verity Murphy | 14:23 UK time, Friday, 23 September 2011

Our Economics editor Paul Mason has just arrived back from Greece, and tonight he will have the latest on the economic crisis both there and further afield.

Plus we will be asking why, unlike in 2009, there is no sign of global leaders coming together to deal with the problem and opting instead for "kicking the can down the road".

Mark Urban will be picking over Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas' decision to present the Palestinians' bid for statehood at the UN later today, despite a US promise to veto the move in the Security Council.

And Susan Watts will have more on the experiment results which are baffling scientists at Cern, home of the Large Hadron Collider, that appear to show subatomic particles known as neutrinos have exceeded the speed of light.

Comments

  • Comment number 1.

So the CERN laboratory has observed particles travelling faster than the speed of light.

Could this undermine Einstein鈥檚 Relativity? Well, if you study it properly there was actually a lot of controversy over Relativity when it emerged. One of the most vocal critics was chemist Frederick Soddy:

鈥渢he theory of relativity, as modified by the modern quantum theory, seems an excellent example of progress in the merely mathematical sphere 鈥.Possibly the Einstein relation is a one-way relation only between mass and energy not between energy and mass, or even more probably, it may not be strictly true at all, as mathematical infinities do not occur in Nature"

Soddy鈥檚 skepticism is there for all to see: 鈥渋t may not be strictly true at all鈥.

So is modern physics falling apart now, just like the theories of modern economics is?

Ahmadinejad's speech this year was a corker imho.

Read it here and read it carefully. You decide if they are the words of a delusional mad man, as depicted by the West鈥檚 MSM, or a lucid, cogent and sentient man.

Our UN representatives had the temerity to walk out on Ahamadinejad's speech. Maybe a few home truths started to hurt. Just who are the good ones and who are the evil ones?

  • Comment number 3.

Oh no not CERN again, or is it that the eco-fascist 大象传媒 can't resist any opportunity to delve into science fantasy land, I believe that the possibility of time travel has been mentioned. Just a pity that the eco-fascist 大象传媒 has not yet done a Newsnight feature on the CERN cloud formation research from last month, but perhaps that could explode the CO2 causes climate change fantasy science. Perhaps similarly the NASA data indicating that the earth's atmosphere is losing far more heat into space than EUA computer climate models guesstimated.

  • Comment number 4.

Good job that the satellite NASA probably used is perhaps conveniently and deliberately falling to earth now so the data can't be repeated. It would appear that the eco-fascist 大象传媒 is very selective on the science it reports, and perhaps that reflects on the underlying overall competence of the specialist presenters. After all 大象传媒 journalists have to keep their CO2 Climate Scam alive since the eventual value of their pension fund depends on extending and maintaining science fiction in the minds of the ignorant masses !

One can only speculate that the only reason the FTSE managed to close up slightly after being down 100 pts at lunchtime was as follows. The hedge funds heavily selling their mining share speculations enabled them to re-pay their loans from the Banks, which all closed up at the end of the day. It would appear that the banks have now got actual cash on their books, but perhaps they will not lend it into our real sustainable economy and yet again lend it for speculation in commodities. One bonus of the stock market crash has been that oil prices have come down ( once again the banks calling in loans to speculators ), lets hope they don't try to start the whole ponzi of borrowed borrowing yet again.

A controversial memento of the death of Osama bin Laden has gone on sale. The "Obama Kill Osama" figurine features the US president standing triumphantly over the body of bin Laden. Obama has a machine gun slung over his shoulder and one foot on his victim's chest. Osama is depicted with a single gunshot to the forehead, eyes rolled back and his tongue hanging out. The limited edition $129 keepsake includes speech bubbles that allow you to write a message of your choice.

    >

The main crisis in 2008/2009 was actually in the UK & the EU & ROW stood shoulder to shoulder making sure that Gordon Brown pulverised the British taxpayer rather than the incompetent bankers that gambled with our money.

Gordo piled the debt on the British taxpayer - but now our fellow Europeans & Americans are facing a similar crisis - their politicians wouldn't dare transfer the debt onto e.g. French & German taxpayers as these German, French & US politicians would be hounded out of office. USA is, of course, a little different, as controlling the global reserve currency, for the time being.

In effect, that is what happened to Brown in the 2010 UK general election - he was 'hounded out' and the German & French politicians are in stalemate as to what to do - as they would both appear to fear/respect their bankers, depending on one's point of view - seemingly in equal measures & simply do not know what to do or are too scared to reveal their preference.

Brown had no such qualms about thumping the British - mainly English taxpayers - the 'squeezed middle' as Millipede calls them - which is appropriate as it was Brown's Labour govt that set in motion debt repayments that will continue the squeeze for the next 50 years.

Having seen this occur - Can we really expect French & German politicians to rush in like Brown & be so easy about making the same or similar mistakes as Brown/previous UK Labour govt?

Hence the very dangerous - 'SQUEE-CESSION' in mainly western, 'Anglo Saxon' business modelled economies.

Einstein went beyond newtonian physics, this discovery, if proven would hint at something beyond Einstein, not sure it is useful to imply Einstein was wrong though. The body of observed evidence is Einstein 99.9999999% correct... at the moment, just as newton is still 99.99999% correct wrt the physics of 'everyday life on earth'.

I am a fan of Einstein, he was actually a very moral and wise man, to view him as anumber crunching nerdy physicist would be a gross misrepresentation. He actually needed help with the maths relating to his theories.

As for economists ... well... that is a different matter entirely, the current model's starting position is 99.999999% absolute b** with no solid foundation what-so ever in any kind of reality.. which, one fears, we are all about to find out in abig way.

Ahmejinidad has tried to publicise some valid points, heck even the 大象传媒 reported his stance on 9/11 as amain headline for about 2 hours .. before it disappeared altogether rather suddenly from the main news page.

However, he may score some valid points but in the round he is still a rather frightening and dispicable character I suspect. Hopefully he is at least shrewd enough not to give the USA / Israel axis an excuse to make a false flag out of his nation, interesting that the USA 'hikers' were released this week, perhaps they realise the danger they are in and are minimising opportunity for excuses.

BROWN 'HOUNDED OUT'? NO NO NO! HIS DEPARTURE WAS A DIRECT CONSEQUENCE OF A CONSERVATIVE WIN IN SELECTED CONTITUENCIES e.g. CHELTENHAM (#12)

Note the wording: "A hung parliament WOULD mean5 more years of Gordon Brown."
"The Conservatives MUST win HERE to stop another 5 years of Gordon Brown."
"A vote for any other party, is a cross in the box for Gordon Brown." (Signed: Dignity Dave)

Well boys and girls - Gordon Brown did NOT come back so CHELTENHAM CLEARLY ELECTED A CONSERVATIVE - YES? AND NO HUNG PARLIAMENT.

    NO! Doh!

By my logic, the flyer, quoted above, was a 'False instrument' - proved so, by the good burghers of Cheltenham. As a false instrument, used to apply UNDUE INFLUENCE on voters, it contravenes Election Law, namely: 'The Representation of the People Act' - section 115. I further suggest its distribution, is 'Misconduct in Public Office' by all the MPs who saw fit to distribute it.

I have informed various MPs, and offices/officers in Westminster, a wide diversity of media, and my own MP (who also distributed it). NO ONE CARES A HOOT.

My MP has told me my logic is faulty, hence he will not engage any further . . .

THE ONLY WAY TO VOTE 'WHO' IS TO VOTE INDEPENDENT (#18)

Your ingenuous question highlights the whole charade Lizzy.

ONLY an 'independent' who is known locally for integrity, decency, maturity (usual list) amounts to 'who'. All the other candidates are ill defined (deliberately) by manifesto (not binding) party-leader-whim (unpredictable) and divided 'loyalty'. They do not warrant the 'who' of individual identity, more the 'what' of something on ones shoe.

Don't forget to ask you MP if your vote should go to his rosette or himself. If for himself - ask why not stand as independent. If for rosette, make clear he forfeits any personal empowerment (he is a cipher). If he says 'both' - NO MAN CAN SERVE TWO MASTERS.

The point being - Labour should not have lost that election even with Brown in charge as they had a massive majority in the House of Commons.

Brown was 'hounded out' over debts, deficits & taxes & liabilities - and the European politicians do not wish to follow in his footsteps - hence the lack of progress on European debt issues

    SINK ESTATE BRITAIN

Childhood being eroded by modern life, experts warn

"The letter adds: 鈥淎lthough parents are now deeply concerned about this issue, the erosion of childhood in the UK has continued apace since 2006. Our children are subjected to increasing commercial pressures, they begin formal education far earlier than the European norm, and they spend ever-more time indoors with screen-based technology, rather than in active outdoor activity and play."

Is it childhood or just Britain per se? It's an oppressive, miserable hell-hole and most people鈥檚 outlets are either drinking, shopping or both.

Whatever you think, we are now in a Global Corporate World and GLOBAL CORPORATE pressure via political donations will perpetuate the relentless marketing, cloning, brainwashing and programming of our offspring to meet their CORPORATE SALES FORECASTS at whatever cost to society.

If the scientists are right that neutrinos can travel faster than light, then we have to conclude that contrary to what most experts say, neutrinos do NOT have mass. And since they do not interact or interact as strongly as light with as many of the other types of particles, antiparticles, dark matter and gravity found in an absolute vacuum, they should be able to move faster than light. Light, though fast in a vacuum, is still being slowed dowm by many of these entities and as such cannot hold the speed record. The "C" in Einstein equation should be the speed of neutrinos in a vacuum.
Actually, the particle or entity that has no mass, no charge and absolutely no interaction with anything in this universe should be the one that holds the ultimate speed record. Unfortunately, such a particle or entity by definition is impossible to detect.

    Well posted MuseV

The direction of travel, and preoccupations, of UK governance, are enough to make one believe that Britain is possessed by the Devil. I suppose being possessed by the psychologically damaged, amounts to the same.

The irony that Dave is 'doing a Tony' - MENDING THE WORLD'S ERRORS - brings on a despair that (perhaps) only nihilistic pursuit of narcotic substances and diversions can blot out.

Westminster is a refuge for damaged children who have NO IDEA of their condition. How ironic that Dave et al were so quick to PROJECT the Westminster syndrome onto our rioters, WHILE DENYING ANY PARALLEL!!!!!

There is no mystery; the reality has been understood for decades; refined as the years passed. But look at tobacco! Decades of understanding of the damage it does, has not stopped its open sale as STATE SPONSORED POISON. Read the packets! It takes a really sick mind to pass a law defining such messages, AND STILL PERMIT SALE.

Lest we forget, one packet-message is: "SLOW PAINFUL DEATH".

Westminster is the common factor in all our ills; it is self-perpetuating and well defended AGAINST THE PEOPLE.

FOR WESTMINSTER-EVIL TO FLOURISH ALL THAT IS REQUIRED IS FOR GOOD MEN TO DO NOTHING.

Can you not see how you are confused? China has a managed Planned Economy, the USA has a libertarian, free-market economy. They are on the same planet, but they operate with different Constitutions. You have to look at each system from within it's own system and not look at each in terms of each other. Each consider themselves democracies.

China manages its population and its government and has a primary duty to its people, not the rest of the world or to shareholders (who could be anywhere in the USA given the NYSE etc). If US companies don't want goods from China and don't want to set up factories in China, it does not have to. It is Americans(?) who have done this, to enrich a minority.

They only care about the other Americans as consumers. What will happen is that US based businesses will look for consumers elsewhere in the world, in developing markets. They have no national loyalty like China does.

Stop referring to China as if it is another USA which is not playing by the USA's rules. Why should it?

The biggest currency manipulators are the US, and in doing so, are totally abusing their power of having reserve currency status (only just I might add).

Try and see beyond the simple headline. Think of what others want you to feel and think about this story. What might their ulterior motives be? Think of these stories as pawns in a game of chess....try to think a few moves forward.

Are these types of people being 'employed' to DELIBERATELY exploit our welfare system TO THE MAXIMUM?

Why else would such people leave their own countries and come here? What makes here more attractive? This is one of the problems with building a welfare state. It's why socialist countries built walls of some sort. It was to keep others out (remember the ring around West Berlin, and enclave in East Germany?).

Most people don't mind hard working immigrants who integrate, providing the economy can sustain them and that they contribute. The justified fear that many have, is that immigrants will turn their enclaves into a replication of the communities which they left back home. In many respects those fears are well grounded.

Because you want a liberal, non authoritarian (aka anarchistic) government. That's why we have seen so much deregulation though, that's why we are losing the welfare state through cuts and privatisation! That's why people have been financially exploited. Many of those doing the exploiting are very keen on mass immigration, as it means more consumers, more debtors, often spending welfare money too!

THINK ABOUT IT ALL A BIT MORE DEEPLY!

This is what it states in his Wiki page...

"Again in collaboration with James Jones, Oborne penned the pamphlet, THE PRO-ISRAEL LOBBY IN BRITAIN, which outlined the influence enjoyed by pro-Israeli lobbyists on media and politics in the United Kingdom. The article asserts that while the lobbying efforts of groups such as Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI), Labour Friends of Israel, and the Britain Israel Communications and Research Centre (BICOM) are not illegal, their funding is untraceable, their operations are not transparent, and media seldom declare the influence of junkets arranged by these pro-Israeli entities on the tenor of their writing. Oborne and Jones conclude that changes are needed "because politics in a democracy should never take place behind closed doors. It should be out in the open and there for all to see." He also presented the Channel 4 Programme Dispatches 鈥業nside Britain's Israel Lobby鈥."

Having 4+ million immigrants added to this already populated Island was only ever gonna be a burden.. people are living in sheds due to lack of housing, rents higher than ever for most families and singles, services crushed with demand, political correctness still running rampant, bending its back to all cultures other than our own -that historical Christian value backbone broke by the degenerate hatefilled leftists due to their constant attack whilst clasping their hands in reverence to the Islamic faith ..all this whilst simultaneously pulling out the racist card to anyone who dare question their diversity loving agenda.

I'm a Tory card carrier -that gets me into their conferences but I'm not active as I live amongst the brain dead Libs and the communists of South Manchester. From a Tory to an English nationalist has been my path in the last 10 years -and with Irish/Scottish parentage, a near miracle has been performed in my fight for English identity... I have a metaphorical megaphone that used to get me abuse...today they lean forward and listen; they get the joke..as they know the jokes on them. Have you ever heard mortified laughter?..its very popular these days. The 大象传媒 ain't picked up on it yet though as they are still busy trying to find a role and a slot for Marcus Brigstocke - that joke blower whose material consists of slagging the Daily Mail off. I don't know if the 大象传媒 **** have noticed but even the students are tired of his routines.

Note to 大象传媒 news hacks. If another building collapses..can you hold back your managed news fed report until it actually collapses. You know, for future reference..I know you can't help yourselves getting in there first with a juicy report and all that but credibility for a massive news corporation with a top notch reputation such as the 大象传媒 must always remain high...otherwise people start asking questions.

Mod: I hope this post meets with your approval for publication as I know the hoops that you've got to pass these things through. I'll thank you in advance for your careful consideration in this matter as I imagine your job is like those games that kids play...Operation and the other one where you have to follow a hoop around a bendy wire without touching the wire...otherwise it buzzes on you.

"MAILBOX IS FULL" - THAT'S A NEW ONE

I just sent a repeat plea, for some Westminster integrity, to Baroness Helena Kennedy - human rights lawyer and all-round good person. (I have been ignored three times, including recorded delivery.)

I got a message back saying her inbox is full. Why should I doubt?

AGE OF PERVERSITY - ASSYMETRIC WARFARE

When an invader mercenary, draped in modern kit, calls vulnerable defenders 'cowards' for following Churchill's defence diktat (using whatever they have) and when another says: "It's quite good fun shooting people", and when none of them suggests they are keeping Tooting High Street safe, you may safely deduce PERVERSITY RULES.

    NOW HERE'S A STORY

Nearly 1 in 4 young children in the U.S. living below the poverty line, but aid to Israel is untouchable

The number of children living in poverty in the United States increased by 2.6 million since the recession began in 2007, bringing the total to an estimated 15.7 million poor children in 2010, according to researchers from the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire. The researchers estimate that nearly 1 in 4 children under the age of 6 now live in poverty. Senior US officials clarified during a series of meetings with Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz, Washington has no intention of downsizing military aid to Israel, despite the drastic cuts in the US budget, according to a Finance Ministry statement Friday.

WE KNOW 'THEY' ARE MAD ENOUGH - BUT IS IT TRUE?

If the Mad Elite mass-vaccinate AGAINST certain diseases and FOR docility, those who refuse vaccination may be removed, at will, by subsequent release of the relevant pathogens.

Sort of puts Manglish invaders, monetary collapse, and housing problems into perspective!

    Don't have nightmares.

Have to love the current 大象传媒 home page photo choice, though I suspect Mr. Miliband may join the ranks of those who feel there are those within the 大象传媒 who are too often 'setting scenes' for what is wished vs. what actually is.

America and Europe: Saving the Rich and Losing the Economy

"In other words, Europe under the EU and Jean-Claude Trichet is a return to the most extreme form of feudalism in which a handful of rich are pampered at the expense of everyone else.
This is what economic policy in the West has become鈥揳 tool of the wealthy used to enrich themselves by spreading poverty among the rest of the population."

In the midst of this global debt crisis, America is the odd one out. The yield on 10 year US treasuries has fallen to the level post WWII, when the US was then the largest creditor nation in the world, and US dollar was on the gold standard. With hindsight, it struck me that raising the debt ceiling could not have come at a better time for the US government, as it helped reinforce the market鈥檚 confidence in their ability to borrow, just before the most recent and serious wave of debt crisis hits Europe. Why launch QE3 when investors around the world are now falling over themselves to buy US treasuries at any cost?

On the contrary, a large part of Europe is now suffering from the serious consequences of quantitative easing implemented during the last global recession in 2008: severe debt crisis, credit and asset bubbles, and an oversupply of production capacity in the economy leading to bad loans on their banks鈥 balance sheets. It is too simplistic in my view to conclude that the problem is caused by living beyond one鈥檚 means. Without large increases in factory orders from abroad, hot money flowing into the Eurozone for years and large capital investments launched to stimulate growth in the economy (after sub-prime mortgage crisis broke out in the US), Greece and other peripheral countries鈥 finances wouldn鈥檛 be in this mess now.

It is always the same game played by an elitist group of financiers 鈥 creation of a bubble (by the injection of capital) and then bursting of a bubble (by the repatriation of capital). Except this time, they have the countries with large balance of trade surpluses to take the blame, even though China and Japan have really been played for suckers on this one - first shifting their investments out of US at super low exchange rates (having been scared out by all those doom and gloom research reports produced by investment banks and credit rating agencies who are surprise surprise ran by the Americans) and then into Europe just before the whole debt crisis is about to shift gear.

Germany at war over eurozone bail-out

Confirmation of the talks, however, sparked outrage in Germany, where opposition politicians threatened to derail the plans by voting against a key amendment to the bail-out fund this Thursday.
