Treasury 'plans for Conservative cuts'

Michael Crick | 10:28 UK time, Thursday, 25 June 2009

A footnight to my report last night on spending cuts:

I understand that senior Treasury officials are already trying to work out which items of expenditure they can delay and stall over the next few months, so that if the Conservatives come to power next spring the Treasury will already have a list of possible items which the new Chancellor George Osborne can then announce he will cancel altogether.

Hopefully the first thing on the list will be ID cards.

    And it's footnight from him...

  • Comment number 3.

Navy aircraft carriers, the replacement for Trident, new 'stealth' aircraft, and the operation in Afghanistan should all come under serious review. Cuts in the armed forces budgets must follow a hard look at the state of public finance. Health is vital for national well being and education is the way to rebuild the economy.

Hardly unexpected. I assume that Treasury officials are drawing up such a list for all parties including the Government estimating the gains and losses from the 'postponement' of projects. The Government will be able to announce its own choice in November
Now wouldn't it be nice if the list be shared with all of us before the Summer Recess for debate. I suspect Micheal actually know what is on it.
