In search of a candidate for Nottingham East

Michael Crick | 16:47 UK time, Friday, 26 March 2010

And now a contributor to has come up with another name being mooted for Nottingham East - the defence minister, East Midlands MP and former Tory, Quentin Davies.

If Downing Street is going to get Mr Davies a seat nearly three years after he defected to them, they must be running out of ideas.

must be running out of ideas.

All things considered, across the politico-media firmament, from what I am seeing here that's not too uncommon.

saw Quentin on the back benches laughing heartily at PMQ's, he looked very happy and with his new mates...I think more will defect..any day now!

I was one of a select band of young Socialists who had the pleasure of campaigning against Quentin Davies at a bye-election in Birmingham All Saints (or was it Ladywood by then?) after the departure of Brian Walden to ITV to present Weekend World. Quentin's first candidacy.

One Saturday evening a small group of us went out after the pubs had closed armed with Crown posters, paste buckets, brushes and a ladder. We were especially pleased with one spot - the corner of Abbey St looked really good - prominent view from several directions.

When we went back on the Monday evening to admire our handiwork it had disappeared completely - gone - posters, wall, bricks and all.

Yes we knew slum-clearances were going on but not THAT imminently.

have you looked at what's happening in John Reid's old seat?? He seems to have parachuted in his researcher to much local concern. It seems she got through as candidate due to postal votes-always a good Labour standby here in Scotland? Then there's Tristram Hunt- Lord Mandelson's preferred candidate, plus the pal of the Blairs somewhere else and so on and so on.Maybe you have covered Lab candidates and I just haven't seen it?You should spend some time north of the border - there are so many stories to be told and no-one seems to bother. One of the most stunning has been the ex leader of Glasgow City Council who recently admitted to taking class A drugs and being warned by the police about blackmail ( while he was still leader). He was very close to labour's biggest donor up here but nobody I've seen in the National media has taken this story on.
