Addio Perugia, hello the regional GDP of Tyneside

My flight got cancelled at Gatwick this morning - Meridiana flight to Florence. Also a Sharm-el-Sheikh flight cancelled. Could not get straight answer as to whether these were volcano-ash related but anybody expecting to hear me give a talk at the International Journalism Conference in Perugia this evening, I am sorry to disappoint. Anyway, enjoy Perugia.

[UPDATE: The event is going ahead via Skype!]

In the meantime there's been a lot of pickup and retweeting about my "Blackberry election versus iPhone election" blog - in a rare double whammy both the techno-geek and the politics-nerd community have found it vaguely enlightening. If you missed it, here's the link.

On Newsnight tonight we will be trying to make some more sense of the polls; capture the flailing panic behind the serene exterior of non-Cleggite parties etc.

I will probably blog later today or tomorrow about the public sector % of regional GDP issue, which the regional and Northern Irish press have splashed on today, following David Cameron's comments to Jeremy Paxman. Or the aftershock of the Greek bailout. Or both. Arrividerci.

physical conferencing is sooooo 20th century?

if they can't access it live on the net then they are probably not the people you need to be talking to?

unless there was lots of wonga in it?

if the regions have had the greatest public service jobs benefit then its time they pulled on the oars too? otherwise its just more of the 'jobs for votes' soft corruption that is democracy. lets hope the 'good' taliban and ex iraqi insurgent are taking notes 'how to do it'? how many have we brought over to witness how to do an election?

    'Is Clegg the UK's Obama?

Clegg is beginning to show clear blue water between himself and his rivals on financial/banking reform. He is being far more aggressive on this. Simply put, Clegg gets it. This will win him votes.

Can he do it...yes he can!'

I pretty much, word-for-word, posted the above message to Peston's blog yesterday (post #4) and it was pulled by the mods!....suspicious or what?

Then this morning there is a link on the Telegraph's website titled
    'Clegg accused of 'anti-politics'

    [Unsuitable/Broken URL removed by Moderator]

...and the story has been pulled...strange or what?

In addition to the serious delays and long hours being encountered by stranded passengers, I think it would be good for Newsnight or the ´óÏó´«Ã½ News to be made aware that many of us customers and potential travellers have been receiving some rather disturbing text messages from the commercial banks trying to indebt us even more by offering financial credit and also offering extra insurance which is not useful if one is already in possession of a return ticket.

Their actions are synonymous to "vultures" luring us, the general public, with yet more toxic products for final slaughter. I have so far deleted most of the emails and kept only two emails, one from RBS and the other from Lloyds TSB; one is offering financial help and the other offering extra insurance cover by directing me to go online in order to get more help from their 'customer help'!

I think someone in the media needs to bring such issues to the public's attention and caution passengers to "open or act with care!" A TV interview with the banks' representatives would also be in order to give them a chance to explain their latest actions.

    Thank you.
