I was flipping through the channels shortly after the jury verdict and I heard Brit Hume on Fox News argue in Libby's defense that the perjury charge he was convicted on was far afield from the real accusation of outing a CIA agent and that if the prosecution hadn't been so singleminded about persuing him, this never would have come up. This brought to mind the very same argument some Democrats used defending President Clinton in the accusation that he had committed perjury testifying about his sexual relationship with Monica Lewinski during Ken Starr's investigation and the subsequent impeachment trial. And in both cases, the other side argued that perjury is a very serious crime under our system which must be prosecuted.
This further brought to mind the system often used in the House of Commons during Prime Minister's Question Time where a number is used as a code word for an entire argument or question.
"Mr. David Cameron"
"Question number 7 Mr. Speaker"
"I refer the right honorable gentleman to the reply I gave some moments ago."
I think if you are going to be inane anyway, there is a certain mitigating element in the pleasing notion that it is done with the greatest economy of words and time possible. All that's needed is for a common understanding of what the code words signify.
"Mr. Brit Hume"
"Argument number 17 ladies and gentlemen"
"Thank you Mr. Hume for your most informative comments."
In our system, that leaves a lot more time for commercials, a real boon to the economy.
As a US Citizen, I consider Libby the fall guy for all of the corrupt politicians of the Republican and Democratic Party. The sooner the USA asks for an impeachment of ALL Politicians and their replacement with a true multiracial multiethnic American Government of Libertarians and Greens, the sooner the USA will be headed in the right direction.
