The blog's new design

So ... what do you think? Let's have your feedback.

It's ok. Takes a little getting accustomed to for the eyes, but that happened quick enough the last time the blog software changed.

I do wonder: as it works pretty much as before, what was the reason for changing?

  • Comment number 2.

Nice job - much clearer and looks more like a blog than previous version. Who is the studious looking fellow in the picture? :)

  • Comment number 3.

There's no way to see recent comments, which is annoying.

The only way to see if there has been any further contributions is to go through each and every topic. I've noticed that people quite often bring up quite old topics, so, when they do, no one will know without trawling through pages of topics, and checking them all individually.

I like the general design, but think that's quite a functional defect. An updated list of the 6...or even, for improvement...the seven or eight recent postings would make sense

  • Comment number 4.

Yes - it looks pretty good. Agree with Bernie about the recent comments thing. Could we not have a wee smile, Will? The previous photo banner was almost like you were swinging round a lamp-post outside City Hall, like Eliza Doolittle, and now you've gone all 'Enry 'Iggins! Bring back the sparkle! :-)

  • Comment number 5.

The "Preview" option is a significant improvement. But I would agree with H and Bernie about recent comments.

    GV

  • Comment number 6.

Guys, if you scroll down on the blog home page there is the "Topical posts on this blog" list. I think those are recent comments?

  • Comment number 7.

I think you're right, but it's not as clear as it could be.

I preferred a list of topics and then; "comment by Peter Klaver", or whatever....that way its easy to see if any replies have been made, who has made them, and even to jump straight to the reply you're after

  • Comment number 8.

I think the recent comments list is improved over the old blog. On the old blog, posts in one very active thread would quickly flush a single post on another thread out of the list of recent comments. Now we see which threads have been active lately, regardless of a flurry of posting in one thread.

  • Comment number 9.

    Good point

  • Comment number 10.

Still, unless you keep track of the number of comments, you don't know if something has been replied to.

Under the old regime, if I wrote something and waited a reply, I could see from the main page "peterklaver has commented"...now all i can do is check all the recent topics to see if there has been a reply to any of them.

  • Comment number 11.

True. Another forum where I post has the dual solution, both a list of recent threads with activity and a list of the most recent posts and names of posters. Will, any chance that could be put up here on W&T too?

  • Comment number 12.

I find it rather easy to find out whether there there have been additional comments on a particular thread. The number in brackets tells you. For example, under 'Bleets and Twitters', up until about five minutes ago, it had (1). Now it reads (2). I deduced from this that someone somewhere has added a comment within the last five minutes.

  • Comment number 13.

Yes, sarcy boy, I did say that.

But can you remember how many posts the "is the bible anti-intellectual" thread had last Friday, and whether any have been added since?

    No, neither can I

  • Comment number 14.

But why would I want to know how many posts there were last Friday, Bernard?

  • Comment number 15.

In order to check if anyone had replied to the post you made on Friday, obviously. :)

  • Comment number 16.

Well, since the blog knows who we are, what about getting the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Bletchley Park Boffins to make a little bespoke box with helfpul personalised info like: "Peter Klaver demolished Bernie's post on "God's Left Earlobe" at 13:21 on 29/4/2009. Your clever take-down of OT on "Did Mervyn Storey Kill The Dinosaurs" has been dribbled over by JovialPTL at 13:22 on 23/10/4004BCE" or some such?

And if it could make coffee too, that would be nice. What about it, Will?

  • Comment number 17.

    lol Helio

  • Comment number 18.

At the risk of being dense, Bernard, if I had posted something on a thread last Friday, I would return to that thread to see what had happened since. I wouldnt trawl through all the other threads incase, miraculously, my post had appeared elsewhere.

  • Comment number 19.

    Jeepers.

    Forget it, doesn't matter

  • Comment number 20.

lol. Or maybe, for those who completely lack any sort of intelligence, we could operate a thread on a seven day structure -

On the first day, Will creates a new thread. On the second day....

  • Comment number 21.

    RJB, are those *literal* days?

  • Comment number 22.

But on Sundays there can be much activity in response to SS. If that becomes Wills day off, it would take away a good deal of activity from the blog.

Talking of Sundays, is it appropriate to pray on Sundays to ask god for things? It's His day off! God has just done a hard weeks work, creating some new strains of flue to counter the medication that doctors have developed, smiting some gays and drowning other sinners en masse. Finally he has a chance to sleep late. But oh no, here come the christians by the hundred million with their prayers, 'Please god, my wife is so hideously ugly, could you fix that please, god?'. Give the poor guy a rest will you?!

  • Comment number 23.

Helio, the actuality of the day in time and space is not really important, as such. Far more important, is the context/culture and mindset of the author.

For example, just say that Bernard posts an outrageous piece at, say, 10pm this evening. It is full of wrath and righteous indignation, threatening fire and brimstone and eternal damnation to all who disagree with him. (Totally out of charcater, I may add.) The fact that we know it was posted at 10pm today would be neither here nor there.

Unless..... From other sources, we discover that Bernard is an Arsenal supporter and then we realise that they have just been stuffed 3-1 by Manchester United in the Champions League semi-final. Then, the time of the post becomes crucial.

We can probably safely deduce from that information, all things considered, that Bernard's 10PM post could be safely ignored.

  • Comment number 24.

Ah but that's the beauty of this system, PeterK, there would be no day off. Everyday would be a blog day. Bloggers would be expected to live EVERY day as a blog day. Therefore, bloggers wouldnt behave one way on a Sunday, then behave differently on the other six days of the week.

  • Comment number 25.

Uh, yes, there needs to be a list of most recent comments with the commenter's name and the thread with a link, something like there was before. From using Moveable Type and Wordpress I know it's very easy to add in the sidebar >>>

Other than that, it's fairly nice scenery here.

  • Comment number 26.

Well, the books look nice ;-)

Maybe god should have her own blog. That would sort a lot of this out, wouldn't it?

  • Comment number 27.

    H

Somewhere, out there, there's a minister who wants to type -

"But you know, in a way, God did leave us a blog..."

  • Comment number 28.

And then turn it into a broadcast for "Thought for the Day".

Does anyone manage to make it through those?

  • Comment number 29.

Yes Graham, I made it through. Actually I found the comments entertaining, but only in a limited kind of way you understand. Just on that point, does anyone know of a word which would describe a 'small (as in tiny) smile', is there a way of saying 'mildly amused' in a single word?

New website, yep, looks good, sort of sharp, clean, but what is it you are reading William, the Beano? The Preview thing is good, but agree with others, needs a Recent Comments list as it helps us to follow responses.

BTW, not being an atheist, I believe in blog, maybe should that be 'B' (capital letter) Blog?

And here, RJB, Utd 3, Arsenal 1? Inside information have you? Prophet? If I discover later that you were correct and didn't put a tenner on it (which I won't) I'll be very cross, but quite impressed.

    GV and PM

Having presented ´óÏó´«Ã½'S TFTD for over twelve years, I concluded that, in general, the radio tended to make a very good receptacle for semi-digested muesli, when it was on.

I'd be interested to know, in NI are humanists allowed to take part in the 'God Slot'?

  • Comment number 31.

    Graham - lol :-)

    But...

    If god had a blog,
    What would he call it,
And would you download his feed
    If he had it syndicated
    On RSS;
    What would you say
If you had just one comment?

And yeah, yeah, god is current,
And yeah, yeah, god is provocative,
And yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah...

What if god blogged on the net?
Just an oddbod on the net?
Just a weirdo with a pet
and an opinion of his own.
    Nobody calling on the phone,
Or Skype or IRC from Rome.

  • Comment number 32.

    RJB

Only 1-0. Thank goodness for that. Not that I didn't want Utd. to score more it's just that now I know your suggested scoreline was only a guess.

    :-)

  • Comment number 33.

Well, I can now copy and paste (without having to select all) in Windows XP. Previously this would only work on Vita, for some reason, so it must be an impovement.

  • Comment number 34.

Pity we still can't edit comments though.

  • Comment number 35.

What, Peter - edit other people's comments?? ;-)

  • Comment number 36.

Just in, Peter, after watching Man Utd on council telly in the local pub. 6 guys in the bar from - Carrickfergus!! (They're on a two week contract on a building site over here.)

I asked them after the game if they knew a guy called William Crawley. Never even heard of him, they said.

Dont you have radio in Carrickfergus yet?

  • Comment number 37.

    Helio- 9/10.

  • Comment number 38.

Was thinking of my own comments helio since I spelt Vista wrong. Too late after a very stressful day. What we still need is:

    (1) An editing facility

    (2) A spell checker

  • Comment number 39.

Otherwise the new format is fine and much better than the old one.

  • Comment number 40.

I should put in a plug for my own newly redesigned blog:

    ...for those interested.

  • Comment number 41.

    Hello peterJhenderson,

    "What we still need is:

    (2) A spell checker"

You could use your browser for the latter. Firefox can be set to do live spell checking while you type your post into the comment box. Frequently helps me out as non-native English speaker.

    John

Your new website. I simply am unable to explain how much of an improvement it is. None of those stupid mini 'pop up' screen capture windows or the RSS style contents list, much much better. Simple. Clear. Crisp. Minimal. Good job.

  • Comment number 43.

Hi Peter. Hope you are well

I often do this but sometimes even that can be wrong. If my spelling's anyway near correct Microsoft Word is usually OK. Sometimes I fail to spot my own spelling mistakes though.

Love it. The new style ´óÏó´«Ã½ blogs templates are a real improvement for readability, and the new header images are great for giving me a clue where I am as soon as I hit the site from me feedreader. The Beeb's RSS feed is sadly lacking in this respect...hard to figure out which section I'm going to end up in or get the gist of the article, in at least.
