_47538001_008880342-1.jpg, Vincent Nicholls, the Archbishop of Westminster, addresses the child abuse crisis facing the Catholic Church and calls on commentators to do justice to the efforts by Pope Benedict to introduce new child protection procedures in church law. Money quote:

"What of the role of Pope Benedict? When he was in charge of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith he led important changes made in church law: the inclusion in canon law of internet offences against children, the extension of child abuse offences to include the sexual abuse of all under 18, the case by case waiving of the statue of limitation and the establishment of a fast-track dismissal from the clerical state for offenders. He is not an idle observer. His actions speak as well as his words."

Sure the Holy Father is without sin.
    But more facts please.
Since becoming Pope how many priests have been dismissed under his "fast-track dismissal from the clerical state for offenders"?
If you are going to say "His actions speak as well as his words" we have to see if his actions are actions, or just more words.

I have just reviewed the rejected comments and can't find anything objectionable about them. Je suis Canadienne Anglaise that equals freedom. Perhaps still too many others are not so lucky as moi.

    Guardian, UK, Cif today asks:

"With reports implicating the former Cardinal Ratzinger in cases of Catholic priests accused of abusing children, does Pope Benedict XVI have the moral authority to make reparation and restore the church's reputation?"

It reminds me of the Chris Rock routine he did about people who boast about how they take care of their kids. You're supposed to take care of them! It's good that the Pope was involved with all those child protection changes in the church law but to be honest the Church, is SUPPOSED to look after their children. It shouldn't be something that suddenly becomes important.

Well that's that all cleared up then. No problems!
    The world can relax again!

    Loved Richard Dawkins comment
No, Pope Ratzinger should not resign. He should remain in charge of the whole rotten edifice - the whole profiteering, woman-fearing, guilt-gorging, truth-hating, child-raping institution - while it tumbles, amid a stench of incense and a rain of tourist-kitsch sacred hearts and preposterously crowned virgins, about his ears.

The proof of The Catholic Church,is there for all to see,it has seen Empires rise and fall, corruption, scandal and sin within the Church itself, persecution, but it will stand fast on the Rock of Peter, never to fail, fall, or be removed till the end of the World as promised by Jesus.
Sure Peter the first Pope, chosen by Jesus, denied he knew Jesus,Judas a first priest, chosen by Jesus, betrayed him,the Pope and Clergy are human like them, and sin,the recent scandals are unfortune, but committed by a small proportion, and minority ,of thousands of Catholic Clergy, who are mostly dedicated to their faith, the child abuse is being committed by other organisation members, yet less mentioned,so lay off the Catholic Church

  • Comment number 8.

Yes, he is doing something about the child abuse within the Catholic Church - he's putting the ordination of women on the same par with it.

    Yep, really serious.

The Church is like any large, ancient organisation; corrupt, overbearing and full to the brim with bureaucractic nonsense. The fact that it claims some kind of divine mandate that allows it to remain unreproachable makes it even worse.

  • Comment number 9.

I dont think the argument that the Church has often behaved wickedly ergo lets turn a blind eye to its present day wickedness, stands.

The fact that it has so obviously NOT learned lessons from the past makes it even more culpable and even more stupid.

Yet again an apologist for the present regime (no 7) thinks that the entire gospel of Jesus Christ contains only one sentence, "Thou art Peter.........."

  • Comment number 10.

Natman - if I recall correctly - the ordination of women is worse than child abuse in the eyes of the Catholic church. The former can lead to instant de-frocking, child abuse does not.
