brady.jpgThe Irish Times has published the results of a poll, carried out in the Republic, showing that the Irish population overwhelmingly believes Cardinal Seán Brady should resign from office because of the sex abuse scandals in the Irish church.

The findings: 76 per cent said the cardinal should resign, 15 per cent said he should not, and 9 per cent had no opinion.

The cardinal faced most opposition in Dublin, where 83 per cent felt he should resign, while the most supportive region was Connacht/Ulster, where the figure fell to 67 per cent.

Whose side was Brady on when he attended a meeting in 1975 at which two kids (perhaps terrified) signed oaths of silence? Was he on the side of vulnerable children, or was he on the side of the the Church giving support to a compulsive paedophile priest?

It is clear as crystal that Brady acted in a way that allowed a predatory paedophile priest to continue to rape and abuse children - how many victims are there that we will never know about who suffer in silence? His name is mud and he should have no part in public life. Should his actions not be investigated by the police?

Surely he should stay as his actions in the past represent what his church is truely about.

Funny, you can make whatever genuinely defamatory remarks you like about the Holy Father or a Catholic bishop, but make a simple factual remark about someone else and you get moderated.

We can only now cringe at the memory of Sean Brady's GAA-style celebration of his being made a cardinal two years ago. (The appointment was meant mainly as a snub to Diarmuid Martin. The Pope is said to "create" cardinals, sometimes he seems to create them out of nothing.)
It would be nice to have a Catholic Primate of All Ireland who enjoyed the respect of the general public but in the end it doesn't matter who the Archbishop of Armagh is. Christ is the Head of the Church.
When we hear that Sean Brady has condemned the local Banks or challenged the Israeli Government it's hard not to laugh and weep simultaneously.
