First to comment; cannot believe it. Best goal is Wayne Rooney's against ManCity in 2011. Everything fell into place at the right time. Athough I must say that shorter footballers are better at that type of volleying.

Tugay for Blackburn Rovers, against Fulham a few seasons ago. Or Le Tiss against Blackburn Rovers in 1994-1995...Or Collymore against Blackburn, and the way he made the ball bounce on a bobble in the pitch that caused the ball deflect the ball over Flowers' shoulder...

I still believe it was Dalian Atkinsons for Aston Villa from the 1st premier league season. He beat a few players then unleashed an amazing chip.

Bergkamp for me. Never seen anything like it again. Bent versus Liverpool?

I'm assuming that Rod Wallace's was in the FA Cup otherwise that's right up there, otherwise Le Tissier for me. We talk about English players having no skill etc and yet when we get one like him we waste him because he didn't track back!

Lillian Nallis for Leicester City against Leeds in 2003/4. Not one of the so called glamour teams so I doubt it will get a mention, but it's a great strike up there with the best of them.

As a spurs fan i have to say nothing made me feel like Danny Rose's spectacular debut goal of the season volley against arsenal a couple of years back, but an unbiased part of me deep, deep down says that Henry's preposterous flick and finish is probably the most technically outstanding.

Wayne Rooney's is the best but I think that Paolo di Canio's is right up there!

Although in terms of occasion and spectacle, its probably the rooney goal, I think di Canio's volley is technically the best goal of that lot.

Is there an award for best OG? If so Jamie Carragher must have a few contenders.

Surely this is about a one off moment of magic rather than recognition of years of high quality performance.

So many great goals. Volleys, as entertaining as they are to watch are the type of thing that a bit of luck is involved, if you hit it right then there is no stopping it, the Bergkamp one is exquisite as is the Cantona one, the arrogance of both to try these things which others couldn't imagine.

From that list I'd give it to Le Tiss, mainly because he said to Tim Flowers he was going to hit his bag before the match, he scored plenty like that throughout his career and he deserves a win. I also have a soft spot for lazy pros with extraordinary talent.

My Personal choice would be Luke Moore against Man City

Different technique but hell,the fact they were both off the ground seem to make their goals more spectacular.
Added spice was Rooney's was in a local derby against the bitters.

Rooney's goal in 2011 should not be on the list as it came off his shin, looked great but technically not the best...and to prove it's not just being a "bitter blue" my fav goal is actually Rooney against Newcastle when he was arguing with the ref...the ball came across and smashed it in...absolutely incredible goal!

Mario Stanic, on his debut for Chelsea v West Ham. Controlled the ball, flicked it off his thigh, then again off his toes before hitting an unstoppable shot from 35 yards. Stunning.

Despite being a massive fan of both Leeds and Tony the Tank (I thought his goal v. Wimbledon was even more spectacular), my vote without question goes to Bergkamp's goal v. Newcastle.

To have the speed of thought, immaculate technique and composure to pull off 'that' turn and finish is just mind-boggling. Agree with (5), never seen anything remotely close to it before or since.

What about Zola's back heel volley? Think it was against Liverpool but stand to be corrected.

Rooney's goal against Man City is heavily overrated. I appreciate the context in which it was scored and the audacity that he went for it, but if you watch it carefully you will see that it came off his shin. If you ask him whether he intended to overhead shin the ball into the net he would say no. This makes it technically flawed compared to the others who seem to catch the ball perfectly (Yeboah, DiCanio) or do incredible things (Le Tissier x2, Cantona). Surprised Boksic's 45 yard lob against Leicester isn't in there, but like many others, he didn't play for a fashionable team. Didn't Poyet score a couple of volleys on the opening day of seasons

My vote would be for Rooney's overhead kick, admittedly it did come off his shin but that doesn't really matter, it's all about the situation: winning goal in one of the biggest Manchester derbies in years. Dalian Atkinson, Bergkamp's hat-trick against Leicester or any one of about a dozen Le Tissier goals. Can't believe some people actually think Rooney's goal against City was the best ever.

Two goals by Le Tissier sometime in the 90's stand out for their sheer outrageousness, one against Villa and the other against Blackburn. Controlling the ball, flicking it around 2 or 3 defenders and then curling it into the net from at least 25 yards. IMO incomparable.

On second thoughts, who was it that lobbed Ben Foster from a goal kick a couple of years ago? Paul Robinson? Or Tim Howard maybe? That one gets my vote.

I've scored a goal like the overhead "shin" before...admittedly missed the previous 50 attempts but I've done it...could I ever score a goal like di Canios or Bergkamps? not a chance..think that sums it up for me

Bergkamp's and Le Tissier's goals against Newcastle took a level of skill and ball control that very few players can match.

Scoring from overhead kicks, volleys, or from long range looks amazing but it's not a rare event and, let's be realistic here, most of the time it represent 10 failed previous attempts to do the exact same thing. We get a couple like that every month in the Premier league, and in some of the lower leagues too.

Surely the "best" goal should reflect a skill that is only seen every couple of seasons and can only be pulled off by the best players in the world.

Beckhams strike was one of those freak wondergoals that come around once every few seasons, just as Cardiff City's Mark Hudson did this week, but from further out again. Yeboah's volley was an absolute peach, and Rooney's bicycle kick was sublime. It's difficult to call as they are all so good. It's split between Le Tissiers second on the video or Di Canios's for me. I'd probably take Di Canio's volley if I had to. It was struck so perfectly. No.1 Di Canio it is for me.

Context is important. There are better goals out there than Zidane's in the Champions League final, but because of the occasion it is thought of as better. Same with Giggs' goal to beat Arsenal in the FA Cup back in '99.

Laurent Robert had two great strikes for Newcastle against Tottneham in Dec 2003 (a match we won 4-0) or his cheeky little overhead backheal type thing against fulham in that same season, could both be in there.

I am amazed no one has said this, I believe it's figiroas (sp?) for Wigan from the half way line. I have never seen a free kick like it. Amazing technique.

Stan Collymore for Forest at Old Trafford. 35 curler into Schmeichel's net. Absolute belter.

Too many amazing different types of goal almost warrants a category for volley, tap in, team goal, skill, power shot, distance etc.

Special mention to Dennis Bergkamp for not only the greatest hattrick but his final goal against Leicester in 97 at Filbert Street. (Possible mention for greatest game)

Rooney's "shin" goal shouldn't even be in here. Importantly they've missed the previous 20 seconds of the clip where Rooney's terrible touch and pass almost causes the sweeping move to break down completely, and then as we have noted, he gets his overhead all wrong and is lucky to score off his shin when he intended to hit it with his foot. Bergkamp's always sticks in my mind, as no matter how many times I watch it, I still can't work out quite how he did it!

Robin Van Persie volley against Charlton, Sept 30th 2006. Could there ever be a more perfect volley? Running at speed between two defenders, a perfect connection to the cross mid-air above waist high in front, and the ball flew like a tracer bullet into the net from 20 yards. Unbelievable skill, and how it was missed from the top 20 I'll never know.

Also, DiCanios was a great goal, but why didn't he just hit it with his left foot instead? Of course if he had volleyed it with the left without the little jump it wouldn't be in this list, but I remember thinking it wasn't the best goal scored that year in teh end of season compilation. can't for the life of me remember which one I thought was better though.

For me it's close between Beckham, Di Cannio and Rooney... but what about Hernandez's backwards header against Stoke? Never seen anything like it before!

To be fair, for one of Le Tissier's goals, the man himself has admitted that he didn't mean to sidefoot it along the ground, he meant to smash it but scuffed the shot! I couldn't believe he admitted it seeing as it looks for all the world like he meant to do it.

Th edistance between left and right foot is minimal, therefore teh decrease in angle would be also minimal. If he's not good enough to hit it with his left then it's not that great a goal. Essentially you're saying he wasn't good enough to do the ordinary so he had to do something flashy! The other goals in here show players executing skills perfectly. They are better goals I think.

Scholes volleys became legendary, but at the end of the day he was under no pressure from Villa players, the ball was dropping out of the sky, he had time to set himself and it was a volley, which is a single strike of the football. It was a great goal, but there is no way on this Earth that it is a better goal than Bergkamp's v Newcastle, Le tissier v Newcastle or Blackburn, or even Yeboah's volley, which was even better than Scholes'.

I think may people like seeing the technique involved in, for example, using the outside of the boot rather than using the other foot. Personally, I think all footballers should in general be much more two footed than they are but, hey, that's the way it is.

Don't think it takes anything away from Di Canio's goal.

It's a clearance from a corner that, it's been headed out goes high in the air, he is 25 yards out and he smashes it against the underside of the bar and in - it is a classic volley! Denis Bergkamp's goal (vs Newcastle) was simple genius... The control and turn around made the defenders look like a bunch of amateurs. Sheer brilliance! Best goal I've ever seen in an EPL game... ever!

The Le Tis multiple flick and volley for me, Rooney's was overated, was lucky as it came off his shin (unbiased opinion). If you want overhead technique search Hugo Sanchez on youtube. Was heavily considering Di Canio, Cantona and Bergkamp though as these were the other goals that needed a huge technical ability to pull them off.

ok it was in the fa cup but giggs goal vs arsenal has to be up there with the greatest goal. you know the one where viera gave giggsy the ball and arsenal won ..... :-). if its in a premier league game so many to choose from so many great memories ronaldos unstoppable free kick vs portsmouth or his one where he picked it up in his own half and ran the length of the pitch against fulham. ronney vs newcastle when he was arguing with the ref corner/free kick was taken cleared out of the box and he just smashes into the top corner and well that over head kick. to many to think of as a united fan some fantastic goals scored by scholes, beckham, van nistelrooy, solskjaer, yorke, cole..... and thats just the memory of a united fan. i have to say the best goal i have seen all season is bale against city.

Get over yourself. Man U players have scored some fantastic goals, probably more than any other team, but you were banging on about Scholes' volley against Villa as a serious contender for the best goal ever scored in the PL. His goal v Bradford was better than that for a start. There is much more to a great goal than smacking it in on the volley. United have scored far better team goals than that one.

It's OK, you can admit that somebody other a United player has scored the best ever PL goal, it won't give you a disease.

James McFadden for Everton v I think WBA or Reading, dinks the ball over the defender's head on the edge of the box and runs around him to volley it into the top corner.

Also Paolo Wanchope for Derby v Man U. Ran 80 yards and beat nearly every MU player.

Sadly, they didn't play for glamorous clubs, so they don't count.

If you are going to pick a Rooney goal, how about his first PL goal for Everton v Arsenal, as opposed to the overhead shinned miss-kick.

I am surprised, out of the so many wonderful goals scored by Ronaldo (free kicks) for Manu, none of those is recommended!! poor guy & poor fans...

Where did I say Scholes' goal was expected? I said it was a great goal, but gave reasons as to why it is not the best goal ever scored. Actually, by that time in his career, I DID almost expect Scholes and Zidane to bag those fantastic volleys.

How many other volleys in 20 years of PL football have you seen go in like that from a cleared corner - I wasn't calling it the greatest goal of all time, but christ it should definitely be getting a mention, it was one of those great moments. And to be asked if I'm serious by mentioning it? Too right I'm serious, go out and try it yourself!

Bergkamp's goal against Newcastle is technical perfection. Volleys & overheads look amazing but no-one has repeated what Bergkamp did in that game since then. A moment of football gold, definitely the greatest goal!

Think a more suitable question is which one of these goals did you try the most when out with your mates playing footy after seeing it happen?

Best goal in PL history for me is Bergkamp v Newcastle. His inital lay off, followed by his ambling jog forward for 30 yards, as soon as he gets into the Newcastle half, he turns on the afterburners, spots the gap in the Toon defence, the pass to him is sublime, his vision to see what the defender is going to do, followed by one of the best first touches ever seen, the balance to spin the defender inside out, the patience for a split second just to have a look up and then the beautiful slide rule finish. That's a goal.

Best was bergkamps against newcastle a few years back, aboslutely mesmorising. One that no one seems to have mentioned that I think was pretty special was a goal by drogba either last season or the season before which involved a deco chip, a lampard volleyed heal pass and drogba side footing the volley into the corner.

I can't believe anyone is seriously suggesting some of Le Tissier's goals don't deserve to be nominated and that a volley should be in the list instead.

In my book, volleys look great, but it's just 1 piece of skill, just the shot, some go in and some go miles wide or over. But goals like Le Tissier's against Newcastle where he has 4 absolutely perfect but very difficult touches are so much better. Just look at that goal against Newcastle that's been nominated, he's 35 yards from goal, receives a header from a teammate that's behind him, flicks it with his heel while running so that's it's in front of him, is then closed down by a defender so touches the ball that's in the air past him, is closed down by another defender, lobs it over his head and then runs on to that ball and half volleys the bouncing ball with the side of his foot past the bemused keeper. 4 incredible perfect touches resulting in a goal that was literally out of no where.

I think the best goal is Dennis bergkamp aganist Newcastle. The flick round the defender, the speed to get past and the strength and technique to place in the corner was just amazing!

None are worthy of comparison with the goals of Shaun Goater for Man City. Most strikers choose the easy way using feet or head.
