I was thinking the other day about how to get them coming up as a screensaver, as I think that would be a fantastic way to see what PM listeners are up to; would it be possible to produce a DVD?

There maybe other more appropriate ways to do this but I'm not that knowledgeable.....

About the dangerous dogs. Never mind if the dogs seem well behaved the fact is some dog breeds just go nuts. I wish that certain dogs like Pit Bull and rottweilers could be made illegal . I think my neighbour has one , I hear it growling in the garden next door and it really frightens me. What can I do? I cannot just go round there and ask him what his dog is and suggest that it may be very dangerous. I think it is quite mad that these terrible dogs are allowed after all the tragic events that are in the news.

Anybody (and there are plenty of them out there) who doesn't recognise this fact is irresponsible. My dog wouldn't bite me, but he might, under circumstances which I, as a human being, am unlikely to understand, bite somebody else.

That doesn't make me love him any the less, only behave accordingly. I love him and wouldn't want to have to take the ultimate precaution if he chose to misbehave*

Dogs do sometimes just 'turn' I speak as the mother of someone who was bitten on his paper round by a dog ( a Doberman) that wasn't muzzled in its owners garden because the owner maintined that the dog 'wouldn't hurt a fly' Possibly it wouldn't hurt a fly, a human it would. 'You scared it with your bag' was another lame excuse. Now it wasn't too serious, although Alisdair was in quite bad shock, the bite was on his hand and it left a scar and needed about 10 stitches and the dog also had a go at his arm, whihc luckily was protected by a peculiarly odious Blue Jays jacket. We also discovered an antibiotic he was allergic to.

I don't wish to interfere with anyone's right to keep a dog but some sort of research should go into it. You should know that you shouldn't keep a dog like a rottweiler for example if you live in a flat and can't give it the exercise it needs. I would love to have a husky but we don't have one because they have been known to suddenly kill and eat cats, sometimes cats they have happily shared a house with for months or years. We have three much loved cats ergo I can't have a husky. It's sad but it's a decision I have to make.

Some dogs and owners can be very frightening; it would be easy to say I don't understand why people want to keep vicious dogs like pit bulls and rottweilers, sadly I do know why lots of them do and it has very little to do with being fond of dogs.

Of course, I'm already familiar with the landscape and many of the characters, both from the body of fiction of which this story forms part, but also from direct contact with the cultural geography, being essentially a Virginian myself....

The author has written much on the disconnect between real life and which forms, so far as I'm concerned, the essential problem of our age.

I have scanned (admittedly rather rapidly) through all of the pictures so far and have not seen one located in a pub. Is this a comment on the abstemiousness of PM listeners or is it because the pictures were taken on a Tuesday (not the end of the week) or is there some deeper reason?

    Re the dangerous dogs postings...

I'm not surprised, unfortunately, that another child has lost their life to a dog and I'm sure this won't be the last incident.

I meet people daily (through veterinary work) who are keeping lethal weapons in their homes in the shape of dogs, and some simply do not believe that their dog would ever bite anyone. They describe the dog's behaviour at home as 'placcid' or 'soft' and 'ever so good with the children'. The same dog owners are then completely shocked when their pet becomes aggressive and uncontrollable when placed in a position of fear or an invasion of its territory.

Others, of course, keep them specifically to be aggressive.

Add to that the fact that some dogs being kept as pets were originally bred for fighting, may weigh from 30 to 80Kg and are incredibly powerful, and you have a disaster waiting to happen.

In my experience almost any dog can become aggressive in the right circumstances but in some that aggression becomes a frenzy which is difficult to stop. The Dangerous Dogs Act (1991) was supposed to address this by banning certain breeds and preventing people from breeding and distributing American Pit Bull Terriers. Initially this did seem to lead to a reduction, but it wasn't long before they re-emerged as 'crossbreds' and now people seem to be openly calling them Pit Bulls again and very few are muzzled in public. Other large powerful breeds are also increasing in numbers.

    Bring back the dog licence?

    GM (33),

I/we used to have soft springers with a pinch of collie, but somehow a cute wee Jack Russell was accepted by my daughter from her uncle. A sad day!

Of course, like kittens, puppies are irresistible, but then grow up. The Springers' bones rest in the garden, but we've still got the original JR, now half-blind, half-deaf, irrascible and flatulent, and two of her yappy offspring, one of which is presently nursing the results of an incestuous alliance....(anyone want a nice puppy?)

They go off like a string of Chinese firecrackers whenever anyone dares to approach the house, or even to attempt to pass by on the road. It sets off a rage reaction in me, and, I start shouting (barking) at them to, "SHUT UP, G**D*MMIT!" - clearly not the best way to train them, but it's as uncontrollable in me as in them.

Left to me, they would have gone down the road long ago, as I've found it far more pleasant to feed and cherish wildlife than livestock, but we must make compromises or live without spousal comforts....

I maintain that I don't own any pets, but I do pay the feed (and Vet) bills for these canines, a uselessly ancient (over 20) feline, an equally useless equine, (who defecates on £200 worth of hypoallergenic woodshavings per annum), as well as providing a half-tonne of birdseed and peanuts per annum to the local birds and squirrels. Thanks to F&M, the government relieved me of the (perfectly healthy and pensionable) ovines and overcompensated me as well.

And if one of the JRs should commit a crime, no doubt the fine would come out of my pocket.

    GRRRR! (YAP!YAP!YAP!YAP!YAP!YAP!YAP!YAP!YAP!YAP!YAP!YAP!)
