Our friends who moderate the blog

Eddie Mair | 14:40 UK time, Monday, 29 January 2007

tell us the moderators had technical problems at the weekend which caused them to fall significantly behind with some comments taking 20 hours to clear. The system, whilst a bit slow, seems to have corrected itself.

So again, our apologies - the moderators work very hard but sometimes the system fails - hopefully things will improve shortly. And watch this space for news of more substantial improvements soon.

What are the chances of finding out what was wrong? If 0, it can happen again? And when will it catch up with the backlong?

Oh dear, I'm beginning to sound like someone interviewing the Home Secretary.

Which reminds me, I was walking in Gloucester today when a man with a foreign accent asked if if I knew the way to the Home Office. Not being a Londoner, I said I had no idea. Later I wondered if he was looking for an office that would help locate some accommodation. Ah, language.

Didn't you say something similar about a month ago? But then again, if there's a 20 hour block on the Blog, I guess there's probably a similar block somewhere else ....

But, in passing, I don't think any frogger should hold you responsible for any of this. It must be a bl**dy pain in the a*se for you, along with the bl**dy newsletter (arrived safely, however, today - ironically!)

and I'm sure that its not only a pain for the PM staff but also the poor s*ds who have to moderate and couldn't do their job due to the technology and now have to work silly hours to clear the backlog...

Just wondering about those "technical problems" the moderators had. None of them were Scottish, were they? And they wouldn't have been having their own wee Burns Night party when they were supposed to be moderating, would they?

It's just that that 20 hour delay could have been how long it took them to sleep it off afterwards. So the letters would stand still on the screen again, I mean, & they could get back moderating.

No? All right, someone let John Reid on the blog, & he started peeling back the wallpaper on Friday afternoon? I hate to think what he found underneath, but it must have been bad .

Fifi - new strapline. hahaha. But maybe it should be "When we break the blog, it stays broken"... I'm sure all those photos have had something to do with it. Window on your world indeed. Comments still seem very slow to appear, & even to be previewed /accepted tonight. Or maybe that's just because we're all typing away like mad making up for lost time? (or lost comments?)

Lissa - have you seen the heartfelt nostalgia for your previous ministrations to the blog? (Don't ask me on which threads, I'm too confused). But it's missing your tender care already. There are dark mutterings that our new Blog Prince is not throwing himself as wholeheartedly into the morass of the Blog. Why, he still hasn't mastered blogging from bed! (as far as we know).

Speak to us, NBP! Come out from under your desk, stop pulling your hair out and grinding your teeth. Repeat after me :

"I will make this Blog work for the Froggers and I will enjoy the challenge. Lissa could do it and she's only a girl. I will not use alcohol to numb the pain or make the Frog go away, because it will still be there in the morning. I am still loved by the Froggers and my life has meaning and substance"

    There now, isn't that better?

You're right, it wasn't too difficult. Copying and pasting can make things *so* quick!

    SERIOUSLY THOUGH:

I understand your frustrations, especially about the time it takes posts to make it onto the Blog. The causes of the various problems are largely out of my hands, as are the solutions and the speed with which they are effected.

As Eddie hints in his posting at the top, there are changes afoot, which *should* make everything a lot easier and quicker.

GM (25) Of course we ate it. Those "real"(ie from Bakewell ) Bakewell Puddings cost a fortune, you know!

I'd left it, wrapped, on the bench in the kitchen, & next morning found he'd broken in & sampled it. I just cut around the damage, & we ate the rest. That was 10 years ago, & we've survived to tell the tale. (Actually , we did have the cat put down some years ago, but it wasn't because of that particular crime...)

G'day Frog Prince. Nice to see you back on your lilypad.

Incidentally, has anyone else noticed that there are still bats flying around at the moment, i.e. they aren't hibernating. Well, at least not here in Sussex (where, if you weren't blogging last week, I'll point out that we had SNOW! - Yes, Eddie, you remember, don't you?)

    Further evidence of global warming?

Annasee (28) so......the other question I just have to ask is....... would you have served it to guests???!!

  31. At 07:33 PM on 30 Jan 2007, wrote:

GM (30) Why are you so worried? Are you thinking of coming over for dinner?

Given that the damage was confined to one small area, & the rest was still covered with the cellophane so hadn't been licked, I might have served it , suitably cauterised, to guests. But only if they hadn't already seen the damage. And it was a very small kitchen, so I probably wouldn't have got away with it.

But I have got a friend who was doing the whole "cook for the entire in-law family (unwillingly) at Xmas" routine, and went back into the kitchen having left the massive roast turkey to rest on the bench for a few minutes, to discover the cat chewing off all the best bits. I asked her how she rescued this disaster?

"Easy - just carved off the chewed bits, carved the rest, & served it in the gravy. No-one ever knew" (till now...)

Annasee - I don't think I shall ever eat at a cat-owner's house again! (I'm no Ray 'I'll-eat-anything-me' Mears). Considering my job (or maybe because of it) I'm a bit squeamish about food!

Actually I do have a friend (hope she doesn't read this!) who has a flatfull of cats which once licked the icing decoration from a birthday cake she was icing. She told me she just wiped it down and re-decorated it....I've never eaten there since!

My Gran dropped a cake in the cat's food bowl once, picked it out and tried to pass off the spots as experimentation with food colouring, but my very young cousin gave her up. Appy/GM: Am with you on the catowner hygiene thing. I've a couple of friends who allow their moggies to roam freely across kitchen surfaces, sniffing food, licking food, and along the way leaving who knows how many germs behind them.

You may have noticed that I love animals, but I also know that cats, dogs, etc., don't wash their hands before coming into contact with food - and I regard that to be basic hygiene! And we all know what else they lick, don't we?;o)

Gosh I didn't realise this thread was still alive. It is, (unlike the rest of the blog at the moment, what a boring place...)

My mother has turned into your Gran, Appy. I can fully imagine her doing the cake in cat bowl thing. They have about 5 cats, who free range round the house terribly. When I go home , & protest "The cat's on the breadboard, for G*d's sake" (or oven, or benchtop, or anywhere else they fancy) her only response is "Yes, he does that". I despair. Our cat never even gets as far as the table, & wouldn't dare lick any of our food or plates (not that I risk giving him the opportunity!)

  37. At 01:05 AM on 04 Feb 2007, Aperitif wrote:

Quite right too Annasee! I have a friend of whom I despair in a similar fashion. "Oh don't do that", in a whiney voice that the cat ignores completely, is uttered, I believe, only for show because other humans are present. I try not to eat at her house.
