    This at least explains the earlier announcement that the law will be changed again to have more than one - Manchester for the North, Wonderbra for the South no doubt.

    I am pleased, however, to have been wrong - I was certain Prescot's meddling was going to lead to the Dome Casino.

    So it's Manchester. They'll be very sad in Blackpool. And fancy us knowing before the rest of the world. Privileged or what?

    But, getting down to basics:

    Manchester/Monte Carlo; Monte Carlo/Manchester.

    No contest really.

    [Note to moderators: I wouldn't mind so much if you didn't sometimes wipe out my submissions as well so that I have to retype, as now .....]

    Seriously, though, is there really that much difference between a big room full of fruit machines and the National Lottery? Either we object to gambling, in which case we should abolish the Lottery and build no casinos, or we don't mind jt. If we don't mind it, why not just license casinos locally, as many or as few as there's demand for, and submit them to the usual planning processes?

    Blackpool should thank its lucky stars (any more trashiness really isn’t necessary*) but would have been a much more appropriate destination; who goes to Manchester for their hols? Not exactly Vegas is it? Silly me, I’m thinking of gambling as a one off, rather than an easily accessible source of bankrupcy for families.

    Why didn’t the Catholic church choose this issue to campaign against?

    * & I do love Blackpool.

    What is it about this Supercasino thing which makes me even more suspicious of some sinister corruption somewhere along the line?
    Has it been decided who will be running the casino? A UK firm or a foreign-based firm? Is there any advantage to this apart from a simple money-making taxation exercise from the government?

    Given that Las Vegas is still dominated by mob-types, will we see an increase in the 'underground' world in this country through associated businesses? Will the supercasinos really do anything to local economy apart from provide a few jobs to people who will probably be bought in from elsewhere?

    Do you think there will be any effect on gambling addictions? Is there a way to combat this, apart from quick credit checks upon each entry or something?

    re. the SuperCasino, the unlimited jackpot slot machines are the thing that will be a killer. Without those I would be more in favour of the plan.

    Manchester City (the football club) should do well out of this as the casino will be built right next door to it - this will undoubtedly improve the currently awful public transport links into the immediate area. Perhaps the casino owners will takeover the club?

My curiousity had been stimulated because he had clearly presumed that we would know who he was -- he waved and smiled at us! I'd heard the name before but was otherwise unaware of him. I now have some of his CDs. Nice voice, shocking ego. Is there trouble about this revelation or not?

    As one who recently worked in casinos, I am interested in the comment that there will be lots of job opportunities for the deprived area of Manchester. For the past 4 or 5 years, casino businesses have been actively recruiting in european countries such as Hungary, Poland etc, because it is almost impossible to recruit here. People do not want to work the night hours for the money. In my experience, Manchester was one of the hardest places to recruit - so watch out for an influx of eastern europeans (who have been found to be excellent workers, by the way).
