Blog Special: from Edinburgh
Nigel asked the comedian Andy Zaltzman, who you might have heard of Radio 4's "Political Animal" and who has a show at the Edinburgh Festival , to imagine cultural life in Gordon Brown's Britain. There's a bit of it in Nigel's report - here's the full version.
I did not find it at all funny. Perhaps we forigners, and 'oldies', have a different sense of humour from you.
Is anybody else frustrated at the apparent lack of a decision by the Department of Transport to commence the change over to a metric system on the UK highways.
Our children are taught the metric measurement at school, the construction industry has been fully metric since the 1970's and the system is so much easier to use than the imperial system.
I think the Highways Agency's should now plan for the introduction of the metric system.
Bearing in mind the 2011 Olympics when we will be hosting so many visitors from the rest of the world who will be bemused by the apparent reluctance of our Government to change.
Oh - oh a posting about Edinburgh, and nobody's interested :o(
Thanks for this Eddie. The weather here today has been lovely, sadly you cant move through the city for the tourists. Still, it'll soon be September 2nd :o)

As a Glaswegian, I am morally obliged to boycott any discussion about Edinburgh except to point out that it is an Escherian nightmare with streets above streets and *everywhere* is uphill.
It's also appallingly expensive to eat in Edinburgh...
...except for a great little fast food place tucked away in West Register Street, peopled by Australian students last time I was there - lovely chips - and for a posher cheap feed, the cafe of the National Portrait Gallery in Queen Street can't be beaten.
Incidentally, if any Froggers are going to the opening of the Glasgow *ppl* Store tomorrow, I might see you there...
SSC - I know them both! the scones and home made soup at the latter are particularly fine. And I shall be in your hometown on Monday. Visiting the new premises of pals (see my link). Good luck on Monday evening, I'll send you electrical vibes from Mr Val P (years of living together causes them to rub off and I have more than I need!)
ValP (5):
Talk about spooky! Last time my mum was well enough to have a day out, I took her to the gallery for lunch and she had the home-made soup and I had a scone.
Thanks for the electrical vibes! *fur crackles with static*
Spooky indeed. Try using fabric softener next time you wash your hair SSC, reduces static :o)
I was there last year, but I neglected to have soup or a scone :-( I shall rectify this next visit! :-)
