Sounds of the Summer
is proving to be huge fun for us - I hope it is working for you too.
I love how these ideas grow. I remember a few weeks ago getting the ´óÏó´«Ã½ email saying the bongs were going off - and I posted summat here. We faffed around for a bit, worried we wouldn't have enough sounds, and we had a few debates about what constituted a summer sound. In the first few days there was even talk of using SOUND EFFECTS!
But we wanted to keep the sounds "real" and related to this summer.
Now, we're inundated. Last week we even got a call from a PR person at a well known theme park offering sounds from her place. As it happens we already had plans for a sound from a different theme park, but it's funny how word gets out.
Eddie.....inundated..does this mean you don't need anymore clips?
DIY
No DI (1) we do indeed want more.
Well I am one for thrilled that it's worked out - and always look forward to hearing them.
Gillians contribution (really from Annasee's SO ( Robert) was excxellent - especially with the flypast - and the voices in the background - but having said that, most of the contributions have been good.
The lapping of the dawn waters in the Scottish Loch was also magical - oh and the Eastbourne Band stand.
The only slight reservation was the applause and introduction to the proms. It was summer orientated, true but 'could try harder' springs to mind!
Now - perhaps an email to Mark D along the lines of:-
Could or should we break an old tradition permanently? making way for 'Sounds of Autumn??
and Winter?
Or even better - just forget about BigBen and the chances are that no one else will notice - a little like how the old (much loved) PM Theme tune was forgotten about.
Which reminds me!
WHO THINKS THE PM THEME TUNE SHOULD BE RE-INSTATED??
Has it ever been discussed here on the blog?
:-)
Did you receive my Sounds of Summer via Cassette?
Yes! (4)
As far as I am concerned, you could play Neil Nunes's voice throughout the year in place of the bongs...he always brings sunshine into my kitchen, whatever the weather.
P.S. what are 'HTML tags' when they are at home?!
Never thought I would hear the Manx GP on Radio 4. Excellent! I was there the following week and had a great time watching the racing, chatting to participants, spectators and in particular, friendly and welcoming local people. Also downed a few pints of fine local beer!
Sounds of the Summer. Brilliant concept, finally the mainstream ´óÏó´«Ã½ (as opposed to just the World Service) has taken on accepting and broadcasting recorded material from the public at large, rather than from commissioned organisations.
Surely the time has come for a programme slot dedicated to public phonography, which is what these summer sounds slots actually are.
Phonography (aural photography or sound 'snapshots', also known as field recording) is a worldwide phenomenon with web forums dedicated to the art (try the Yahoo Groups Phonography forum), which have been active for many years.
Incidentally, much phonography is recorded using binaural (headphone surround sound) techniques giving full periphonic (with height) 3-D surround sound on conventional stereo broadcasting systems simply by listening on headphones. This immerses the listener fully into being at the recording location. Ideal for mp3 listeners using earphones.
How about it ´óÏó´«Ã½!!
Question really - where can I download the Sun's Hum? - yesterday's sound of summer Big ben replacement

As you have so many of these now, how about allowing access to them all on the blog for Froggers delight?
Don't forget the Sony award is only for a year!!

When you played the Sun's hum from the Sounds of Summer on Thursday 20th September, I could not hear it as I was on a bus at the time.
Now I cannot find any site where one can download the sound.
I am in a library so I cannot hear it on play it again as I have no headphones with me.
Help!
