What fun! On the front page, the "latest entry" is given as "Busy Old Day" or whatever it's called, but if one goes into the comments there, it offers a "next page", which turns out to be the Glass Box for Thursday. That's not on the front page as the latest entry.
Wheee! Am I the first to crack this cunning code and find the Glass Box? (16.40, Thursday)
...that sounds like a super wheez, & i might hav to try it tommow...hem-hem.
Poor Blue Peter, I'd imagine the management will have quite a few choice names for little sox now...
Maybe "cooking fat"
:P
Why is Fig Lover investigating dairy price fixing?
Paddy hasn't been making up the jam spoon thing has he? Surely he can be trusted?
Steve was right when he talked about the relative prominence the beeb is giving to Blue Peter's cat. NOBODY CARES!! Your senior managers are all barking - or possibly miaowing.
Another fabby programme folks !!!
Particularly liked [in no particular order]
* Adrian Chiles talking about the Special One
* Welsh National Opera
* The 'scandal' over Socks/Biscuit, when Mark Thompson can't even realise that chopping 20% off the Newsnight budget is less important than naming a moggie !
The Blue Peter cat No3 on the website...
If the 大象传媒 wasn't censoring.... ops sorry I have already been blocked from posting a certain name on the grounds that it is malicious....
Let's just say it would be No4 if a certain other story was allowed to be spoken of.
I shall return to my thought control lesson.
Now that's what I call an impressive sound of summer!
Chris (1) - "Recent Entries" never, ever has the latest entry in its list!
Similarly "Recent Comments" rarely lists the most recent comments and can be more than 24 hours out of date!
The disregard for the viewers鈥 choice of the Blue Peter cat鈥檚 name surely is 大象传媒 arrogance in microcosm.
One is led to wonder whether the current confessions of a few minor misdemeanours is a way of diverting attention from the institutional bias that has distorted 大象传媒 programmes for over 30 years.
Given the financial squeeze I suspect 2 cats will be more than the approved quota and the current incumbent 鈥淪ocks鈥 will soon suffer the fate of 鈥淗umphrey鈥 on the arrival of the Blairs at Number 10.
RJD @ 10, hah! to you! The Glass Box for Thursday is listed as the Latest Entry at the moment.
Nyah boo snibbins!
Now if only my steam radio had been prepared to let me hear the latest sound of summer, rather than just a sound like the usual interference when one tries to get Helsinki late at night, my cup would probably run over.
Tonight's editor writes:
I thought it was worth while hearing more from the OFT tonight. We tried hard to nail exactly what evidence it had about supermarket collusion - you sense this has got some way to run.
Thought the language used by both guests on the post strike said it all. Adam Crozier from the Royal Mail was set on running a successful commerical business - Dave Ward from the CWU argued for the need to maintain a successful public service. Of course, I'd have prefered it if both sides had talked to each other on the programme - but as Eddie said Mr.Crozier wasn't so keen.
Say what you want about modern opera - and people do - I thought Nigel's report was tip top. As a team we are fans of Adrian Chiles - he's welcome back anytime.
Finally, we are debating whether it's right to go on having a sound of summer - long after this summer has officially finished - which I gather it does soon. No one seems that sure when Big Ben is likely to return. Whaddya think?
Chris (12) - As I write the most recent entry in the "Recent Entries" is "A busy old day". Thursday's Glass Box hasn't made it onto the list yet.
You say " listed as the Latest Entry" - where is that?
Tosh, King, tosh.
So each bank believes that any or all of the others is dishonest or capable of it.
These banks won't lend to Northern Rock or indeed each other.
But King thinks Northern Rock could have been helped secretly.
How? The banks know they are not lending to Northern Rock y'know and the absence of such borrowing immendiately becomes clear in Northern Rock's balances.
So how could the help be secret?
Because every bank believes every other bank capable of dishonesty in respect to its exposure, we are left with the central problem that our affairs are run by people in fear and loathing (Buiter) of each other.
Is King helping out people making dodgy deals?
Well, the banks have got a great deal of bad debt that they are going to have to keep on their books and so cannot make loans to each other except with the help of King's credit facility.
I'd call that helping out the banks with their dodgy paper.
The underlying problem remains. The financial system, and pre - eminently the stock markets, permit the rich few to over price their assets, wholely dishonestly, to the detriment of the many.
King as usual is saying contradictory things. Last week it was important to avoid helping banks with theri overexuberance. This week they should be helped.
Now the banks know that King will always fish them out if they take over - risky positions - openly or secretly.
Now, WE know that the system they administer is inherently dishonest, but Central Bankers bring, we are told, a special quality to the fray.
It is their REPUTATION.
(It means broadly that they don't give in to short termism and pander to the immorality (or moral hazard) of the banks.)
Now today we know of one Central Banker who has lost his and possibly that of his bank and the capital city it belongs to as well
Rupert (13)
First - good prog tonight.
Second - if you allow the sounds of summer to fade simply because summer has officially finished, then I for one will ... well, I'll be cross. I shall pout and simper. And we wouldn't want that, would we?
BE BRAVE! BE SURREAL!
'And a happy Boxing Day to you all. Tonight's sound of summer comes from Altrincham, where ...'
You know it makes sense.
Sid
This Mervyn King seems to me to have come out of left field.
He isn't that darts player slimmed down a bit.
Nor that sports manager bloke.
So who is he?
Are there profiles anywhere, web or personal assessments?
I suppose there's only one question. Is he honest? Does he have a reputation for speaking the truth?
So many people these days think that 'doing what they think to be right' is more important than telling the truth.
If he weren't honest and the media were too frightened to tell us so because of the laws of defammation, should we worry?
I would have thought honesty in a Central Banker was more valuable than a willingness to adhere to his own private moral code.
We are all in the hands of this unelected INDEPENDENT official. Frightening?
He is the only person I've ever heard calling for more secretive government.
But a liar? Surely an MP would have used privelege by now to call him a liar and a dissembler if he was.
But then who believes MPs these days?
So, say an important unelected official WAS a liar but the country's welfare depended on his honesty. Would the fourth estate have the courage to name him, to call him out? Or would it be scared off by the laws of defamation.
If your paid financial doctor tells you all is well and his advice for you is working well despite current signs, would his being a liar make any difference to the value you place on his words?
There is such a thing as Governor moral hazard after all.
Gubernatorial Moral Hazard.
An example:
A governor believes that doing what he thinks is right is more important than telling the truth.
But his job requires that truth telling be paramount.
If the lovely Eric (in whom we trust) were ever to move on to pastures new (and don't think we haven't noticed how often he's seduced into chairing that Any Questions thing on Friday evenings - and also how often he doesn't deign any more to frog from the train while he's on his way there), please may we have Adrian Chiles (with or without Jose Mourinho) to sit in? Just to allow Sequin a little more time with her family?
xx
LadyP
Adrian is great isn't he LadyP (19)? I am sorry about the lack of Friday pics. No wifi on the train again this week...and last week I flew. Will take some snaps and post over the weekend.
Eddie(20) and Lady Pen(Good to see you again!)
Thar Adrian Chiles is a bostin' chap. Ah luv earin' 'im on the wireliss. 'E cums from the Black country, weer all the good uns cum from!
Adrain Chiles and the opera - tippity top!
Oh you 大象传媒 types.
Please stop talking about yourselves.
Trust? This is Britain.. trust no one!
Eeore (8), I just clicked on your link to see whether I could find a clue to what you're claiming has been censored from your posts. Blimey! You're a bit interested in the McAnns aren't you?
Rupert (13), Sober by 7.03pm eh? Not bad; not bad at all...
Eddie, re your sounds of summer at the closing of last eves prog......brill......those low low frequencies had us all strutting our stuff over here in the Pacific.....nice one :)
Sorry to dissent here on Adrian Chiles.
He's the principle host of what may be the most excruciatingly unwatchable show on the Beeb. I refer of course to the 'ONE show' found on 大象传媒1 each weekday evening. A show for nonentities hosted by nonentities. Lightweight fluff and pointless, at the most important hour of the TV day. If my SO puts it on then I leave the room. It may be the Midlands accent, which really grates on my ears.
He started out, if memory serves, hosting 'Light Lunch' on 大象传媒2, a lunchtime look at the world of finance and the markets.
Then he translated from that to the world of Sports (finance to sports, I bet not many have travelled that road). Now he's hosting a magazine programme. A jack-of-all-trades, but plainly a master of none of them.
I didn't agree with his opinion on Jose either. He always came across as a dour man, with a high opinion of himself and little regard for any other, who whined a lot about the injustices of football, usually wrongly.
Sorry.
Si.
Re; (25) Blue Whale
Yes interesting as the sound of the sun was, I couldn't hear it on a One railway train thundering through the Norfolk countryside. The train had a similar but much louder hum/rumble. Mind you that doesn't make it a sunny train service, a flatulent cow sound might be more appropriate for that.
Si (26) - For goodness sake will you stop sitting on the fence and tell us what you really think! :o)
I agree that the ONE Show is pretty lightweight fluff, and I think that is exactly what it is intended to be! But do you really consider that the most important hour of the TV day starts at 7.00p.m.?
As for Adrian Chiles, I quite like him. And as someone with a very identifiable regional accent myself, I'm all in favour of having others on the airwaves.
Carl from the Eastern-region PM branch (27)
re: couldn't hear it on a One railway train thundering through the Norfolk countryside........surely a figment of someones imagination?
well maybe the Bure Valley Railway does :)
Si (26)
I think you may find that the format for the One Show is meant to be lightweight fluff.
I for one look forward to it after a hard day on the hell desk etc; it helps me relax before tackling the more intellectual stuff like Corrie, Sharpe & Dr Who!!
And Mr. Chiles, my hat goes off to him...a black country boy makes good. He is a very engaging presenter and long may he continue.
DIY
Come on own up, was the Blue Peter dog "Shep" the winning name?
well maybe the Bure Valley Railway does :)
Only during the Santa Specials.
Am a bit late in the day with my tuppence worth I know seeing as its nearly time for tonight's programme (well 2 hours away), but I thought it was a fab programme. And I loved the Adrian Chiles spot - I think he was spot on about Jose. He will indeed be very sorely missed from British football (and I am of course referring to the fact that he was an excellent highly skilled football manager - the fact that he happens to be exceedingly sexy and totally gorgeous is completely irrelevant......:0) ). But lets face it what other manager refers to his players as grade 2 eggs.... classic!
RJD @ 10 and somewhere else I can't find, I have a feeling I misunderstood you. Sorry. I'll try again.
The most lately-posted entry on the Blog when you first go there, on the front page, appears with the heading "Latest Entry". The ones below it are all headed "Recent Entries". That's on the front page; with my browser, there is more information down the side, and the "Latest Entries" list there shows those which are called "Recent Entries" on the front page. It never shows the "Latest Entry" from the front page, so you're right and I was being misunderstandish there.
If one opens a thread by clicking on "comment" underneath it, one is offered places to go to (as well as being able to scroll down and read what everyone has posted); these are called "previous" and "main" if the thread is "Latest Entry", or "previous", "main" and "next" if the thread is one of the "Recent Entries".
On the occasion I was exclaiming about, what ought to have been called "Latest Entry", the Thursday Glass Box, didn't appear anywhere when one opened the front page, but could be reached by opening the one put up before it (A Busy Old Day) and then pressing "next" from there. Thursday was lost for a short time, in other words.
And if that wasn't what I meant, I have *no* idea what I was on about!
For a Fiona, Sequin and all da laydees outa dare:-
Thanks DIY (34) -- I'd never seen him before. Looks a bit squirty to me actually -- don't fancy him at all. But then, I never do from just a photo.
Eddie (20): He is a man who wears his heart on his sleeve. He has passion and wit - a very attractive combination - plus a wonderful face for radio . . . and is a master of the throwaway line that you'd miss if you weren't listening really really carefully. Now . . . I wonder who he reminds me of?
xx
LadyP
Gawd bless you Di W - you have made an old laydee very happy :)
Nighty night....
