Tough guys and tears... 5 blokey films that make us blub!

1. The Shawshank Redemption (pictured) - often cited as the Best Film To Miss Out On An Oscar (see https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7261504.stm) it's also the ultimate movie bro-mance. Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins go through hell together but never lose their dignity. It's the film version of a stiff-upper lip.

2. Gladiator - the story of a guy who uses his manly strength to devastating effect - all so he can get back to his family. The epic and bloody journey that he goes on only makes the tragic intimacy of the ending more poignant. Man, I'm welling up here...

3. Top Gun - it may be one of the most macho pics of the 80s but when a surprise death occurs the glamour of the US military gets a welcome dose of reality. All Tom Cruise can do is...ahem...take it like a man and honour his best friend's memory.

4. The Pursuit Of Happyness - before this, Big Will didn't often do vulnerable. But in this true story, his desperation to provide for his nipper shows that even the softest men can end up winners.

5. Armageddon - big and cheesy it may be. But when action icon Bruce Willis sacrifices himself for the love of his daughter (Liv Tyler), it's a rare touching moment that proves even the hardest nuts have hearts.

I disagree entirely with all these. None of them made me cry, especially not Armageddon!
Only two manlyish films made me well up. I'm embarrassed to say Forrest Gump and Mr.Holland's Opus - brilliant film with Richard Dreyfuss.

what about The Green Mile makes me cry every time i watch it, defo Forrest Gump, armagedon shouldnt be there, not really sure bout gladiator, havent seen top gun so cant comment on that, im sure there are better films for this category, ... ah yeh lion king
shawshank redemption defo, green mile defo and saving private ryan too many sad moments in that film

As much as I love the Shawshank Redemption, I really don't see why people would cry at it. I really can't think of any moment in the film where I would have cried.

Agree with GeezaMan that the correct Stephen King/Frank Darabont film would be The Green Mile. I watched it the other week, and I cried at least three times. Also Forrest Gump and Saving Private Ryan. Hang on, I see a pattern emerging. Tom Hanks films make people cry!!! Remember when he lost Wilson in Castaway.

Also, the recent Star Trek film had me in tears twice as well.

Armageddon?? Seriously? That film is so money i could understand crying at the awesome epic-ness of it, but nothing else.
Gladiator, again, is epic money. But not tearjerking.

Where is Saving Private Ryan? the scene where Mrs Ryan receives the news of her son's deaths is a tearjerker for sure!

Also (another Tom Hanks movie) Cast Away!!! When Wilson floats away i was shaking trying to stop myself from bawling like a little girl.

I understand the 5 films in the top five, and as good as 'The Shawshank Redemption' is, I have to agree with Craig that I can't think a part you cry at!! I do think 'Green Mile', and 'Marley and Me' should be in there, with '7 Pounds', that would mean getting rid of Top Gun, Gladiator and Armageddon, but didn't find it difficult to look at my wife after watching those and speak, try watching any of the 5 I've mentioned then look at you girlfriend/wife and speak, you just can't without blubbering like an idiot .....

i don't agree with most of these to be honest, the green mile should defiantly be in there and what about men of honor

  • Comment number 7.

Where is Pay it forward?? Thats the only film to make me blub like a baby.
