What Do You Mean You've Never Seen? Superbad

Okay, I'll be honest. I don't actually believe that you haven't seen Superbad - but it is Edith's first film in her new Film Club so it makes sense (ie. I've been told) to write about it.

It's no hardship - I actually love this movie, mainly because it's so believable. Teen drama comes in many formats, from the glossy power-plays of Gossip Girl to the baked-goods antics of American Pie and its 23 sequels. Both amazing, yet neither entirely believable.

Superbad is different. With Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg basing their script on their own teen years and director Greg Mottola coming from a low-key indie movie tradition, the pic keeps things minimal, low-key and real. It's just a day and night in the lives of 3 high-school losers - Seth (Jonah Hill), Evan (Michael Cera) and Fogell aka McLovin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). Nothing more. But when the characters are this rich, you just want to hang with them whatever the plot (or lack of it).

The fact is, there's nothing funnier than watching nerds who think that they're Brand-style love machines.

Comedy maestro (except for Funny People) Judd Apatow oversaw the production and it's got his stamp of big laughs and down-to-earth humanity all over it. In the 3 years since this was made it's a fact that Judd, Jonah, Michael, Christopher and Seth have been involved in EVERY laugh you've had. Remember that time your mate hilariously fell over in the car-park at Tesco? Apatow wrote that.

But there's a reason for their success and you can see it in Superbad. As writers/actors/stand-up comedians they are complete funny men, pouring their passion and their lives into their work. The result is a bunch of films that wow you with their honesty at the same time as making you soil yourself with laughter. 'Wowing' and 'soiling' - that's all I want from comedy.

This is such a good film, after seeing this I have wanted to watch everything with Jonah in it. He is just brilliant as Seth. Me and my mates love this so much we have actually named one of our mates "Fogel" and it has stuck since we saw the film. One of my all time favorite comedies.
