Death In Cannes

Post categories:

James King | 17:34 UK time, Monday, 31 May 2010

Don't worry about the slightly morbid title - it is just the name of a film. A film which I made, as one of the challenges during my 'International Radio 1 at The Cannes Film Festival'.

Up and coming American director Alistair Banks-Griffin directed the below video, and shot it on my pocket video camera, after I recorded an interview with him. For the full story, listen to the documentary at 9pm on Monday 31st May on Radio 1, or listen again on the iplayer.

Meanwhile, enjoy some classy black and white short film genius...even if I do say so myself.

Goodbye Cannes (and Bangor) ... James King gets thoughtful

Radio 1's Big Weekend, the Champions' League Final, The National Movie Awards, my mate Neil's birthday party - May's a busy month, that's for sure. Oh yes and there's the Cannes Film Festival, the busiest few days for any movie journalist and an eye-popping love-in by the industry that I just can't get enough of. All cinematic life is on display on France's Cote d'Azur for that week and a half, from sleazy Z-list producers hawking around their exploitation DVDs to even sleazier A-list ones with their blockbusters.

Several competitions run alongside the business deals, with a seemingly endless supply of arthouse movies up for awards and a few future classics getting their first look (last year was all about A Prophet, The Black Ribbon and Inglourious Basterds). That said, this year both the indies and the Hollywood big boys seemed thinner on the ground, perhaps coincidence (it happens every now and then) or maybe because of the recession. Let's face it, showcasing your pic, its director and its stars to thousands of press isn't exactly a cheap business. Didn't seem to bother Cheryl Cole though - apparently she picked up a nice £250,000 for playing/miming at one of Cannes famous parties. Lindsay Lohan was kicking around the clubs too, publicising her biopic of porn star Linda Lovelace (which can only be amazing) whilst Paris Hilton made her annual appearance, not really doing anything but skulking about on a yacht. If that's what Cannes means to you then you're not totally wrong, but there's defo more.

Hopefully the International Radio 1 documentary that I worked on out there will fill in the gaps. Enjoy.

Trailer Tuesday - Death At A Funeral

Post categories:

Producer Ian | 12:53 UK time, Tuesday, 18 May 2010

Hello bloggers!

DeathFuneral_moviesblog.jpg

Well Chris Rock appears to be in a rather sticky situation in this photo. At a funeral (without a tie). Looking sheepish.

Death At A Funeral is out on 2nd June and as the name suggests, it's about a family who put their father/husband to rest... and things don't go to plan.

Innnnnnteresting.

It features the likes of Chris Rock, Danny Glover, Luke Wilson and stacks more. And you can check out the trailer

It's the Cannes Film Festival...

...10 days of madness on the French Riviera.

The whole world's movie industry is here to pitch ideas, do deals and show off their films. It's officially crazy.

Today I:

- Watched Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, the sequel to the 80s classic about dodgy stock market traders starring Michael Douglas.
- Interviewed John M Chu, director of Step Up 3D, on a roof.
- Spoke to Dev for Radio 1, from a French radio station in a basement.
- Interviewed Josh Brolin, who's in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, on a balcony.
- Interviewed Liam Gallagher at the launch of his film company, where he announced he's only going to make one film before he shuts it down.
- Met an American director called Alistair who has made a film about brothers burying their mum (that's actually amazing).
- Interviewed the Scandinavian voice talent for new animation The Moomins & The Comet Chase.
- Got on a boat and celebrated The Moomins movie with Stellan Skaarsgard off of Mamma Mia.
- Had a pizza, went back to the hotel.

It's been kinda busy. More with me and Max, from 9am Saturday and Sunday on Radio 1.

Oh, and here's a picture of Liam Gallagher playfully toying with my microphone.

New Robert Pattinson Pics - James King's Analysis!

Post categories: ,Ìý

Producer Ian | 14:45 UK time, Monday, 10 May 2010

So here are some nice new R Pattz pics for you, direct from the set of his latest movie Bel Ami. Whaddya reckon ladies?

Ìý

BelAmi01_reduced_moviesblog1.jpg BelAmi02_reduced_moviesblog.jpg

It's certainly a good move for him to make. I remember reading the book of Bel Ami in my French classes at school and Rob's character, the fame hungry Georges Dulroy, is a million miles away from icy Edward Cullen. This is the story of a social climber, a Parisian nobody who works his way up the financial ladder by being the arm-candy of frustrated housewives. It's a great role.

And, of course, it's a role that he needs to be a success to get away from that relentless curse of the franchise star - type-casting. As Zac Efron attempts the same thing - turning down the teen-tastic Footloose in favour of moody drama Charlie St Cloud - both guys face a battle with the media over whether they can be seen outside of their blockbuster bubble. Both, I reckon, have the talent to pull it off.

More importantly, they've also got the looks. Whilst Star Wars leading man Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) struggled to find other hit movies it was his decidedly sexier co-star Harrison Ford that hit the big time. Ditto Eilijah Wood and Viggo Mortensen from Lord Of The Rings. The jury's still out on exactly who will break out of the shadow of Harry Potter although maybe R Pattz, as the former Cedric Diggory, has already claimed that prize. With upcoming movies co-starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz (Unbound
Captives
) and Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz (Water For Elephants) he's certainly got the cream of Hollywood on his side, with those projects reeking of awards potential.

Even if they do what Rob's recent pic Remember Me did - ie. disappear without a trace - then I still think that the guy's got the talent (and cheekbones) to do a Johnny Depp and, aged 40, find himself the toast of mainstream Hollywood with a wayout role in some Disney blockbuster. Don't forget, Depp's movies were generally only cult hits until Jack Sparrow came along.

So have another look at these Bel Ami pics and remember this moment. Come 2030, that guy you're looking at now could be starring as a rum-swigging Jack Jnr in Pirates Of The Caribbean 12. Arguably a better career move than Taylor Lautner, recently signed up for Stretch Armstrong, a movie based on a plastic toy. Savvy?

Hot Tub Time Machine - Dumb but ultimately cute comedy about middle-aged
losers reliving their youth via a very special jacuzzi. 4 stars

The Back-Up Plan - J Lo gets artificially inseminated, then finds a
boyfriend. The End. 1 star

A Nightmare On Elm St - Moody remake of the classic horror that looks
slick but lacks any real Freddy Krueger menace. 2 stars

Four Lions - Smart look at wannabe UK terrorists, from comedy legend
Chris Morris. Get past the controversy and you've got a few laughs with
some real political punch. 4 stars

Hello there! Who wants to see the new trailer for 'Shrek Forever After'?

Well you can in a second - but we also reckon you should check out these brand spanking new images we've got of the movie...

fatcat_moviesblog_final.jpg tweedledee_moviesblog_final.jpg

...cool huh?!

So Shrek Forever After is going to be out at cinemas on 2nd July and it looks like we'll be seeing the return of the old favourite characters...and some new ones too.

Without wishing to spoil the plot, we can tell you that Shrek finds himself in some weird alternative land, has some issues with Rumpelstiltskin and has to sort 'em out before anything crazy happens.

If that's not a full enough description - check out the trailer

Hot Tub Time Machine - Scott's Review and Clips!

Post categories:

Producer Ian | 15:48 UK time, Wednesday, 5 May 2010

Hello! Scott Mills here...

You may have heard us talking about our new fave film - Hot Tub Time Machine - on our show recently. Saw it the other day - and it was everything I thought it was going to be and more. As the name suggest, it's all about a group of guys who spend a night in a hot tub, and then wake up in 1986. Amazing. The retro soundtrack is brilliant, Craig Robinson (from the American Office) is the funniest and there are some great jokes running through the film...the best one being the hotel porter. It's the most stupid film for some time - that's why we love it.

Here's some clips so you can check it out too...

Two Trailer Tuesday - Eclipse & Knight and Day

Post categories:

Producer Ian | 14:32 UK time, Tuesday, 4 May 2010

Hello bloggers!

Hope you managed to squeeze some movie time into your bank holiday weekend. And as it's Tuesday, it's time for another 2 trailers. Today - Twilight Saga: Eclipse. And also, Knight and Day

First up, Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Scream.

Eclipse_moviesblogfinal.jpg

Yep, R-Patz, K-Stew and T-Lau (is that what we call him?) are back for the 3rd installment of the saga. This time, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge. As if that wasn't enough, she has to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob. Decisions, decisions, decisions!

It's out in cinemas this July and you can check out the trailer

Next up: Knight and Day

knight-and-day_moviesblog.jpg

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz are back in the action-comedy 'Knight and Day'. During their glamorous, globetrotting and sometimes deadly adventures... there are shifting alliances, unexpected betrayals and, by the seems of it, lots of cool sunglasses.

It's out on 14th July and you can check out the trailer

James King's Friday Reviews - April 30th

James King | 10:50 UK time, Saturday, 1 May 2010

ironman2_12thapril_online.jpgIron Man 2 - It suffers the usual 'too many bad guys' problem of sequels but Tony Stark and co are still on explosive blockbuster form with a nice line in smartass one-liners and AC/DC tunes. 4 stars.

The Last Song - Cheesier than a stuffed crust Quattro Formaggio but this Miley Cyrus weepy (based on the book by Nicholas 'The Notebook' Sparks) is still a slick slice of touchy feely teen romance. 3 stars.

The Disappearance Of Alice Creed - Minimal and matter-of-fact thriller with an awesome turn from Gemma Arterton as a girl kidnapped by ex-jailbirds after a quick buck. Icy, shocking and unforgettable. 5 stars.
