Prototyping Weeknotes #74
Another quiet week with a few people on leave, and the UX team in Salford working on projects with Vicky. Chris L did a fair bit of research on the news linking prototype, along with Duncan. They built an early stage prototype which finds opinion and editorial pieces from around the web related to the top stories of the day on ´óÏó´«Ã½ News bulletins, using RSS, screen-scraping and Solr. Chris and Yves also ran a successful "machine learning lunch" with Libby and Chris Newell from the R&D South Lab. Yves discussed the ABC-IP project we're doing with SME but spent most of his week working on the first deliverable for the ABC-IP project, describing all data sources that will be used in the project.
Chris N continued his investigation into how to synchronise real-time events to live video streams for the P2P-Next project, and set up a streaming system, using and . Duncan worked out how to use stunnel, nc and launchd to connect to our IRC server. George had 7 phone meetings and 2 trips to the dentist, ow.
Kat researched the ways that other News providers allow and encourage their users to "follow" and share their content. She also demoed RadioTAG to the company conducting the audience research due to start next week and then met with Vinoba from the mobile team in R&D to talk about the work she's doing on orchestrated media, and how a prototype and user testing might enhance some of the research she's been doing into synched services. Finally, she met with a colleague, Ian Knopke, to discuss the research he's doing on recommendation engines. Joanne and Pete continued work on the FI use cases, and spent Weds and Thurs in Salford with Vicky and Theo.
Olivier hosted a meeting between the ´óÏó´«Ã½ and Russian news agency on the topic of Linked Open Data and semantic web platforms for news. Several of our ´óÏó´«Ã½ colleagues, including Yves, gave presentations on the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s usage of linked open data and the building of the semantic platform which powered the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s and is due to deliver more and more of ´óÏó´«Ã½ news and sports online. The RIAN guests introduced similar efforts to bring tagging and linked data at the heart of their operations.
We rounded off the week by at the and were heartened to see him ´óÏó´«Ã½ R&D's work around orchestrated media and second screen research (1hr 1 min 38 secs in) - and then we're off for the long weekend.
