Legends Johnson and Stransky re-live the nerves (65)

Paris 鈥 Friday morning - Every now and then, you have a chat with someone so expert, so unarguably knowledgeable, that you just have to ferme your bouche and listen to every single word they say.

Such was the scenario the other day when I parked myself down next to Martin Johnson and Joel Stransky at a Visa Legends reception down the road in Bercy.

Did they know their onions? My giddy aunts 鈥 to the extent that I鈥檓 just going to step away and let their words speak for themselves.

Lower down, we鈥檝e got Joel on what it鈥檚 like to be a player in the final few hours before a .

But first up, here鈥檚 on what the England boys have to do to snatch the William Webb Ellis trophy from the Springboks鈥 grasp.

England legend Martin Johnson

鈥淚n any game, and particularly in the World Cup final, the first 10 minutes is where it鈥檚 all at," said Johnson.

"If England can keep in the game 10 minutes at a time, respond to what happens to them, be pro-active and create stuff they鈥檒l have a chance. But above all else, they need to be relentless.

鈥淪omeone on the South African team will do something pretty good 鈥 make half a break, get through 鈥 and it鈥檚 all about how we respond to that. They鈥檙e going to score points at some period during the game, and it鈥檚 how we respond to those points.

鈥淚t鈥檚 all about what鈥檚 next in rugby. If you score, what next? If they score, you need to score next. If we can keep our focus, keep our error-rate to an absolute minimum, that鈥檚 all pressure on them. If we don鈥檛 let them out of their third of the field, if we don鈥檛 give away a penalty, if we don鈥檛 allow them any space to make a break or take a kick.

鈥淧ut pressure on them, let them make the errors. We鈥檙e not going to give you that interception, we鈥檙e not going to drop the ball on our own 22 and let you run it in.

鈥淲e鈥檙e going to say 鈥 you鈥檒l have to do something special to score points today. Any mistakes you make, we鈥檒l be right on them. We鈥檙e going to create opportunities for ourselves with our own play, and we鈥檙e going to make it very difficult for you.

鈥淵ou can鈥檛 control what the opposition is thinking before the match, but during the game, through the way you play, you can affect how they feel physically and what鈥檚 happening to them mentally. We did that in the last two games and we need to do that again on Saturday night.

鈥淣erves can get you at any point during the week before. You have these moments when the fear just hits you.

鈥淏ut if you can think of it as a game of rugby, rather than a World Cup final, that will help you. If you start thinking about the enormity of each individual action on the pitch, you鈥檙e going to have a problem.

鈥溾橧t鈥檚 just a rugby game on a rugby field, the same as every field you鈥檝e ever played on.鈥 That makes it more simple 鈥 then it just becomes about just scoring more points than they do. It鈥檚 just a game, just a game of rugby.鈥

Whoosh. Talk about analysis.

Rugby Legend of South Africa, Joel Stransky at the Visa Rugby Legends press conference

Here鈥檚 Joel鈥檚 chat:

鈥淭he night before the final, you have to find some way of relaxing.

鈥淚t鈥檚 so hard to sleep 鈥 you can鈥檛 sit still, the butterflies are going 鈥 so you have to calm everyone down and find a way of getting a bit of sleep.

鈥淪ome will stay in and listen to music, some will get out of the hotel and walk around, get away from the small room and get out in the open.

鈥淧ersonally, I couldn鈥檛 sleep at all before the big game. I would toss and turn and lie awake until the early hours.

鈥淭he biggest problem is the waiting. It鈥檚 energy-draining 鈥 the nerves start unwinding and it eats up all the good stuff inside your body.

鈥淚t鈥檚 the worst thing of all. When I got to the ground, I was okay. But the morning 鈥 you鈥檙e waiting for the next bit of stimulus 鈥 first it鈥檚 a meal, then you wait for a meeting, then another meal, then it鈥檚 waiting to get on the bus. It seems to take forever.

鈥淲hen I got to the stadium, I鈥檇 go out on the pitch 鈥 look at the grass, check the angles, see what the wind was doing 鈥 and these things would keep your mind busy. Which boots should you wear, and have I got the right studs in 鈥 what about that corner where it鈥檚 a bit damper 鈥 it all helps.

"Then you get strapped up, put your shirt on 鈥 it鈥檚 a busy time, and at least you鈥檙e now in the process of getting ready to play. That last couple of minutes rushes by so quickly. Suddenly the moment to walk out is upon you.

鈥淚n some matches I was so focused that I can鈥檛 remember a thing 鈥 what the stadium looked like, what colour shirt the ref was wearing 鈥 nothing.

鈥淚n other games, I managed to find a slightly more relaxed demeanour, absorbing the crowd and the singing and the atmosphere and the anthems.

鈥淎nd you need to absorb it, or otherwise you鈥檒l look up at some point in the game and it will hit you all in one go.

鈥淓ngland have to be enormously confrontational. They have to win the scrums 鈥 which I鈥檓 sure they will do 鈥 and then they need to win the contact situations and the breakdowns.

鈥淢ost importantly they have to defend wonderfully, not make mistakes. If they go 10 or 13 points down, I think it鈥檚 all over. They don鈥檛 have it in the armoury to go out and chase the game.

鈥淚f England are competitive, kick their goals and get down to the last 10 minutes and it鈥檚 close, they鈥檒l be very tough to beat. They鈥檙e very good at closing the game out 鈥 . They鈥檙e so street-wise, and that won鈥檛 change 鈥 they have great players in a couple of key positions, and heaps of experience.

鈥淪outh Africa haven鈥檛 been pushed into a situation like that, where they鈥檝e have to pull it off at the death. I would be concerned if it鈥檚 awfully close in the last few minutes. But I think South Africa will be too strong in the opening 20 minutes. They鈥檒l take their chances. I鈥檓 saying 24-12.鈥

All the rest of us chipping in our two cents is all well and good but really we're just "rugger huggers" and why not, we all love the game but few have been lucky enough to experience 80,000 people cheering you on in an ultra competetive environment.

I'm neither South African nor English but the hairs on the back of my neck are already standing up!

Cant imagen a dressing room with more support than one with the likes of Vickery, Robinson , Wilkinson etc. SA lack such experience.

I know we're all over-excited, SAffers and Poms alike, but let's not allow this to spill over into disrespect, overt gloating and arrogance (for the winners) and bad grace and recriminations (for the losers). Both teams deserve great credit and will be trying to make tomorrow a day to remember, even though one of them will lose. As fans we should want to be proud of the way we backed our country, win or lose. This message applies to long-time fans as well as bandwagon-jumpers - we'll make room for you on the bandwagon, but please don't spoil it by behaving inappropriately if things don't go to plan.

Kipling gets quoted a lot. Why? Because no-one, imho, has expressed it better.

"If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same...

...Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!"

England do have a strong pack and i think that they will win the scrums, they will not be as dominent as they have been in the last few weeks though. But the backs is the big difference, Du Preez and Habana are just too good though and i don't think the Englands backs will cope with them. Also in Montgomery they have a world class kicker who has not struggled with the ball like Jonny has in this tournament.

All that said, come on England, you can do it as long as you bully them up front, win the break downs and contact areas and stop those backs getting the ball!

And surprisingly I tipped Engerland to get to the Semi's at half time v South Africa all those weeks ago. They play a strong forward game and have more talent and nous in the backs than given crdit for. So if I could dispense of the "Rosenthal Media" and the odd one eyed supporters then would be happy to see em win as long as they play to potential.

South Africa will be in the English faces from the start and have the game breakers - do they have the temprament for the English sledging?

Prediction - England win if they are within 5 pts in last ten minutes, if not the Boks.

I agree, but do you think SA or the ABs will win tomorrow? :)

That's the point. Logic can only take you so far and raw emotion and nerve will be far more important. Both sides have that in spades but ones going to come out on top.

Anyone with a time machine? I don't know if I can stand the wait so how the hell will the players manage.

If it's any consolation I'm arriving in Paris tomorrow without tickets, and can't afford to throw a months salary at one. I'm taking a gamble on someone doing the right thing and selling me one at reasonable price.

At least I have the Eurostar booked and a room, so I'm doing pretty well.

..as for work this afternoon - not my most productive, cos I'm toooo excited!

I'm surprised people don't realise that the two worst teams(IN TERMS OF THE BIG SIX) are playing this final. South Africa reached this point without playing New Zealand, Australia or France who would all probably have beaten them. England were lucky with their victories over Australia and France and were mercilessly pulverised by South Africa as they have been in their last four games played together. South Africa will sail through the final with a massive win. Not the result that I'm hoping for but realistically it's the only one that is in the realms of possibility.

Good luck chaps but I fear 40-12 to South Africa at best.Consolation for me is that it won't eat my heart out as I don't feel that sport is the "Be all of life" and love almost everything that makes up the British way of life particularly when I compare it to the South African way.

Jeez, I feel nervous just reading that. What Jonno says is true undoubtedly. I think England have the upper hand having players who have played in a RWC final before.

I suspect that by full time we will be left wondering how on earth England managed to get there in the first place. Tri-nations and Super 14 to be exonerated. Jonny to be in sensational kicking form though.

My prediction SA to win, 36-9.

raymond rudaizky, you sir are a bitter and sad individual.
im not sure what point your trying to make, do you want all SA and England fans to suddenly realise they shouldnt be in the final and force the RFU to let NZ and Australia back into the World Cup? are your simply trying to annoy fans of teams still in the cup? are deliberatly showing yourself as a fool?
if SA do destroy England in the final at least we got there!! we are very very happy and suprised by this and very proud, you say your amazed no one is aware that the worst 2 teams are in the final..... o god i cant be bothered to go on, YOU ARE A FOOL

Tom, Ben, you may neevr see England in a world cup final again. Buy a ticket and never mind the cost.

If the official one comes through, make sure you pass it on to an equally deserving supporter of the game. I have no doubt the experience will ease any financial pain you feel.

After all your hard work blogging you should never need buy a pint in any rugby club ever agin. Thats got to be some compensation...

Tom,if no ticket has arrived through channels by the morning go out and get one by any means. To have been through the whole campaign and then miss England in the final makes no sense whatsover. Having read Johnson's take I realise how important the first ten will be. England have to withstand what will be an early onslaught. Then manage it ten by ten. I think England will score a try and I think they will turn the tables on the Boks and we'll see how they (boks) function under pressure too. I wonder whether there has been much contact between the team and the likes of Johnson and Sir Clive Woodward. I am sure just their presence will lift the whole side. And I suspect that the England lads will be going into this final in a very good positive frame of mind.I just hope there are no big injuries or ridiculous refereeing decisions.

Was fortunate to be at two games in this world cup, Wales v Autralia, and Canada v Fiji. (Our WC Final which we could have won in the last minute.) Enjoyed the atmosphere at both for similar reasons. Could the underdog beat the favorite? Both games went as expected. Not too many games have since the knockout stage started. The building tension for the actual final and the exchange of comments from all around the world is making this a WORLD CUP. Wanting the players on both side to have the game of their careers because this will mean that we, thefans, get a truly memorable game of rugby and the players can walk tall at the end of the game. Born in England, naturalized Canadian from Quebec, very much wanting an English victory.

Rob,
You're absolutely correct. I'm no genius but certainly a realist. Just look how Argentina destroyed France tonight and think how England struggled against them. Believe me I am praying for England to win tomorrow night and hope I am totally wrong in my predictions. I still maintain that the ideal final would have been between Australia and New Zealand who are the best teams and that this year's final is between no.3 and no.5 in world rating terms.

I hope that Johnny and the team proves me wrong as it will depress me if England lose!

Realistically, SA should be too strong, but England have showed great bottle to get to the Final. So I won't write the English off. But god I don't want you to win, because I couldn't take another four years of English media crowing.

As to that drivel about Aus and NZ should be there: bollocks. They both choked, they both got beaten by teams they should have been able to beat comfortably, they both bottled it under pressure from 'lesser' sides. SA, by contrast, were put under pressure twice in this tournament, with samoa and fiji both taking them on, and both times showed the coolness and class to pull away and eventually win comfortably. England have showed maybe a little less skill, but absolutely tremendous guts and courage under pressure. I expect the same from both sides tomorrow. They're there on merit, they're the two best sides left, and they'll give us a great game.

Go bokke!

"Yes our boys stuffed them 36-0 in the pool stages, and it's a shame they couldn't win the whole thing. But well done the Boks for getting to the final, they only have to wait four years for another chance. There's always the tri-nations - where we have to play those two teams that were about 6th or 7th."

Raymond - Rob is right you are a fool. Rugby Cup competitions don't always get the number one seed to win - Rugby is far more complicated than that - It is a thinking mans game - I was there at cardiff and NZ didnt think - I'd hope a 16 year old with half a rugby brain would have been able to tell them how to win that game with 10 to go - ergo they are not the best in the world! Rugby is also a game for sepcialist technique - The Aussies have been trying to de power the scrum for years because they can't bothered to learn. I hope they never achieve that aim. Come on England
