Joanna Newsom live at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall
Joanna Newsom's previous appearance in Glasgow saw her backed by the 32-piece Northern Sinfonia orchestra at the City Halls. Tonight's show at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall was a slightly more stripped-back affair but certainly no less impressive.
Accompanied by trumpet, percussion, guitar, violin and occasionally even Jew's harp, the American harpist, pianist and singer-songwriter opened proceedings with "The Book of Right-On" from debut album "The Milk-Eyed Mender". While this was an immediate crowd pleaser, it was one of only two occasions where she would venture far into her back catalogue (a short and sweet "Inflammatory Writ" would make an appearance later).
Understandably, most of the evening's material would be taken from new album "Have One On Me", with album opener "Easy" receiving particularly strong applause. Other highlights included "Soft As Chalk" and "Good Intentions Paving Company", and while each track would easily hit the eight minute mark, the Concert Hall crowd were hypnotised throughout.
As the gig drew to a close, the other musicians left the stage to allow her to finish the set alone on stage with "Sawdust and Diamonds" from "Y's" before returning for a 20 minute encore.
Joanna Newsom left Glasgow once more to a standing ovation, and while I couldn't help but wish we'd heard more material from her first album, I'm sure I won't be alone in ensuring I'm in attendance the next time she drops by.
