Never ending story

Steve Wilson | 13:49 UK time, Monday, 29 June 2009

on Sunday, and on Monday in the final of the European Under-21 Championship, a match which brings to an end the 2008/09 European football season.

So (hopefully) still aglow from England's youngsters' win in Sweden, the sun will be out, the football will have finished and it'll be time to get the barbeque going, crack open a bottle of beer and settle down to a diet of tennis and cricket until the whole thing starts up again... on Tuesday!

The Champions League trophy

Yep, that's right. The 2009/10 season starts 24 hours after the last one finishes with the first leg of the first qualifying round of the .

is the place, and from the island town of Paola take on the first-time champions of , .

Actually, a whole 24 hours between seasons seems a bit excessive to me.

After half an hour of grumping, grunting and pouting from (and that's just Murray) I will probably have had enough.

As for cricket, I have a new format.

After five-day Test matches, 50-over matches, 40-over matches and 20-over matches, why not go the whole hog and have a six-ball slugfest?

You could get all the teams in one place in one day and get the whole season over during the course of an afternoon.

Fantastic. Time for a cup of tea and bit of cake before the footie comes on again. Anyone know where you can get a feed of Maltese TV?

    Nice Blog mate...

24 hours is about 24 too long for my liking...

Not a fan of your cricket suggestion, as it is the closest thing to real sport in the summer... anything to make Wimbers go quicker though is welcome... It's God-awful all that tennis stuff.

  • Comment number 2.

It is actually possible to watch Maltese TV online. One channel is called "Smash TV". Please be aware that that is a brand name, not an instruction.

The game might be unimpressive. Malta is famed for its defences, notably agaist German visitors. Malta Hibernians have, in the past, secured 0-0 draws against ManU and Real Madrid.

    Hope this is of help.

  • Comment number 3.

Yes everyone seems to get the tennis fever this time of year, I just don't feel it myself. Good short blog though, interesting to know European qualification starts so early. When do the welsh, Irish and n irish teams come into it? Fairly soon as well I'm guessing.

  • Comment number 4.

    Hi Steve
I assume you mean 6 ball slogfest rather than slugfest. A slugfest is definitely what is happening to the lettuce plants in my garden at the moment.

  • Comment number 5.

    Zootmac...

Is it just me and you that comment on these blogs???

Thanks for the info though mate, your better wikipedia i tell you...

Steve, no Blog (and a general lack of interest) in the Under 21s reaching the final of the european championships tonight... Man U sell Ronaldo and thier were like 15 blogs on it... Whats up with that? Sort it out would you, don't make me be one of those "is this what i pay my licence fee for" guys, i hate those guys! They suck..

  • Comment number 6.

The blogs about Ronaldo were understandable. I couldn't believe that there were 3 blogs about the fixture computer!

  • Comment number 7.

  • Comment number 8.

Granted, Ronaldo was a BIG story... but your point really furthers mine 3 blogs about the fixture computer... Yeah kind of interesting, but hardly comparable to England getting to the final of a major competition, under 21s or not... This is MASSIVE! And its against Germany, could it be any bigger if it tried? NO.

Oh and that fixture thing is retarded anyhow... in a game where one guy can be worth 80million the PL still uses one dude to put the fixtures together??? Thats stupid... (but see how i married the 2 stories together!)

Probably - but don't forget that I get a shilling every time.

The answer is: tomorrow, as well. In the preliminary round of the Europa League, Motherwell are at home to Llanelli, and Linfield are away to Randers.

Intriguingly, in the same competition, Malta's second team, Valetta, are at home to Keflavik.

Two European ties, involving fiercely rival teams, on the same day in Malta. The average bus is about fifty years old, the temperature will be in the nineties, and everybody in Malta has a gun.

Sounds like fun. Smash TV is the place to be.

    I think I'll sell that.

  • Comment number 10.

Its only a couple of days until the transfer window re-opens and a few weeks until the pre-season friendlies start, but I agree with you Steve nothing will fill the gap properly until August the 8th when it all starts for real. Fingers crossed we can add to our 8-man first team squad by then!!

  • Comment number 11.

As a fan of maltese football, being maltese, i can tell you that hibernians are well up for the challenge. And, Valletta have a new sign- Jordi Cruyff. He's agreed to play for a year, then become assistant manager for 2 years. Big coup for the maltese league

  • Comment number 12.

Damn you and your shillings Zootmac... your a sell out! All these big shilling postings are what's killing the game, i prefer local postings that are brought up through the youth system and posted for the love of the game... Not your mercinary shilling posts...

Arsene Wenger has never received a shilling for any post on a blog ever! FOOTY FACT!

    But,

"The average bus is about fifty years old, the temperature will be in the nineties, and everybody in Malta has a gun."

Sounds like the tag line to the Tarantino football movie which needs to be made!

  • Comment number 13.

Only if we can have Bruce WIllis and Vinnie Jones in it. Would probably need Michael Madse as a mad defender as he is in practically every tarantino film.. Maybe a footie version of planet terror with Zombie footballers.. AKA Newcastle United season 2008/9

  • Comment number 14.

Presumably next season the world cup finals will still be completing after the first matches of 2010/11 have been played

  • Comment number 15.

13: That is the forward thinking this country needs! Add Sly Stallone as the goalie, and we have a movie my friend! Oh yes we have a movie!

  • Comment number 16.

The cricket idea, sounds like when we were kids, we had a game with a cricket bat and a tennis ball down street (back in the day) called "keep the kettle boiling", it was non stop and knackering, but proper fun. Aaahh those were the days! Tis` true about Malta and armed heavies roaming around running things, don`t mess about if you go there, behave yourself in the casino`s, and don`t upset any locals!!

  • Comment number 17.

I'd rather wall to wall cricket, football doesn't start until Southend play so i'm not too bother with Maltese teams, unless they draw Southend. At this rate, whoever can find 11 players would be in with a good chance of winning

  • Comment number 18.

If you really need to watch some football, CONCACAF Gold Cup is about to start this Friday... there will be plenty of B squads, including the US which will rest key players, but nevertheless it could be interesting.

  • Comment number 19.

You can tell Steve knows nothing about the greatest sport - Cricket. I take your point - 50 overs and 40 over matches are too excessive, but to even contlempate the idea of removing Tests - with the Ashes coming up - is in my opinion, actually downright disrespectful and offensive. I, as an important contact of the ´óÏó´«Ã½, will be reporting you young man. 20 year-old geezers such as yourself, with no university scholarships, and no education whatsoever, should not be doing silly little blogs like this.

  • Comment number 20.

Football could be whittled down too. Certain football clubs I won't mention could form a breakaway set-piece league, similar to US football but using corners, free kicks and throw-ins. Or have they already done that?

    Idiot.

  • Comment number 22.

I like my football as much as the next man, but honestly, just a few weeks of no matches would be good. Can't we at least have July as a no football month? We can all talk about it, write about it, watch replays of it, but no actual games please!

  • Comment number 23.

The season ended after the international qualifiers a few weeks ago.

  • Comment number 24.

I for one cant stand cricket and can only watch the ladies tennis matches for obvious reason (uh hmm). Only way to keep sane now is to put some hours on football manager and when im not doing that ull find me playing pro evolution and when that seems to lose my attention ill just be kicking anything I can find around the house that resembles a ball until pre-season kicks off.

  • Comment number 25.

What a fantastic idea! Cricket over in one quick slugfest...Tell me where to vote!

  • Comment number 26.

Is that what became of the Intertoto Cup? It was squeezed to death by the two relentlessly expanding ends of adjacent seasons? (A bit like that crusher thing in Star Wars...)

Or was it just abandoned because it was a bit crap?

  • Comment number 27.

What do English journalists dislike so much about Murray, is it his will to win that no other English sportsmen seems to have at the highest level, or is it just simply stereotyping and racism, oh! the grumpy Scot? I am intrigued and somewhat puzzled.

  • Comment number 28.

    my bum is itchy

  • Comment number 29.

    only joking it's fine

  • Comment number 30.

    Keep The Faith,

I suspect the English have a "dislike" of Murray due to his comments about "supporting anyone who is playing against England" during the last footy World cup.

I'm a rarity - I was born in Gibraltar which makes me truly British so I don't understand all the hatred of the English by the Celtic nations.

  • Comment number 31.

" What do English journalists dislike so much about Murray, is it his will to win that no other English sportsmen seems to have at the highest level, or is it just simply stereotyping and racism"

How can consider racism as an arguement because someone dislikes as Scot? That makes no sense. People do not like Murray because he has made it abundently clear of his dislike for England; just liek the average Scot. We neighbours have never got on, so what is all the fuss about?

  • Comment number 32.

Murray IS grumpy, even in Scotland. And his ma seems permanently to be sucking on an acid drop.

The PR people have softened up the image a bit, but it's still a difficult pairing to warm to.

Wonder if it's a Spangles acid drop...

Are you saying that only people with university scholarships should be writing blogs on a bbc sports page? It's an opinion - you don't have to agree with it! If you are, as you claim, such an important contact of the bbc, then why are you having to go on the website to express your opinion. I think you just feel you are an important contact because you come on here a lot. Am I right? ...am I?

    I thought so!

I support league of ireland soccer and we are just coming up to the half way point in our league

Europe starts for us on the 16th July and I've got my flights booked for Latvia for the first leg.

  • Comment number 35.

    Sorry to be rude steve.
your picture makes you look like danny dyers tubbier older brother!
ban cricket now - as for the grunt that is murray.....

  • Comment number 36.

How have we got into this ridiculous Murray debate again? Plenty of English tennis fans like Murray (myself included), some don't. I just wish people would discuss his tennis and not his nationality or personality!

And yes, let's get football back on as soon as possible!

  • Comment number 37.

    Mr Twilight...

Are you joking? A month without football...
In South America the season does not have the break we have and just kind of keeps rolling on.

I do think we should have a break but only to get in our international games. Come to think of it what about England playing all their qualifying in the close season instead of during the season. Surely this would free up time during a hetic season and give the squad time to gell? The games could be played in the summers before the finals?

  • Comment number 38.

Too much football altogether in my opinion (and I love football). The champions of Montenegro v The Maltese blah blah blah

    Who really cares...

The golden goose is being prepared for the oven in front of our very eyes - and the greedy swine who run the game cannot see it.

Reminds me very much of the superb Mitchell and Webb's sketch about football and how it's on all the time.

"WATCH THE FOOTBALL. IT'S ON. WATCH IT!"

go back to your old folks home!

also cricket is barely a good sport, its far far too boring to be considered a great sport

  • Comment number 40.

And of course, you can always play FIFA 09 on your PS3 :)

#30: I'm not British, but I've also wonder if all this anti English feeling doesn't get too far sometimes.

  • Comment number 41.

Steve, are you going to be eating your hat as you promised you would during the Confed Cup? And will you be filming it?

    Thanks

You should try living outside UK - you'd quickly realise just how valuable a tradition wimbledon is.... Not to mention the Ashes...!

The last survey conducted by the Times of Malta, three months ago, recorded 20 guns, including machine guns and pistols, for every 100 people in Malta.

The Maltese love their guns. They love using them. There is virtually no wildlife left in Malta; it's all been shot.

The last time I was in Valletta, there were no seagulls anywhere along the vast harbour. The gulls know not to make an appearance; it would be a brief one.

If you want to know about the fifty year old buses...

    Maybe later.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Z

Please don't think that I've given up on the Tarantino film. In fact, I've contacted Arnie, who confirmed "I'll be back", so that's Centre Half covered. With your recommended list of heavies for the cast in place, and Dick Van Dyke filling in as sweeper, we're well there.

The Newcastle FC theme is a possibility, feasably using the title "Wor Jackie MilBrown", which would harken back to a more glorious era. I suggested this to a Geordie I know, but he preferred a more contemporary theme, using the title "Inglorious Basterds". But when I suggested putting that in Cannes, he was worried that there wouldn't be enough room left for his Newcastle Brown. There's no pleasing some people.

Other themes might be "Reserves Are Dogs", a reflective study of a relegation-threatened manager who is unimpressed by his bench, "Pimp Fiction", an allegory set during the era of Wayne Rooney's liaison with an elderly professional lady, and "Bill, Bill", the story of an agrieved Real Madrid accountant who can't understand why the cost of refilling the communal dressing room gel jar has gone through the roof.
