In praise of...

I'm inaugurating a new series on the blog praising aspects of technology that makes our lives much simpler.
And the first entry on the hall of fame is... free wireless hotspots.
I'm sat in McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas and the wi-fi is free.
After spending a week at the world's largest technology show and barely finding one kilobit of free wi-fi, I am delighted indeed.
Thank you McCarran airport.

At this point we should also give a shout-out to Rapid City Airport in the USA, which also offers free WiFi for it's travellers.
It's just the thing you need whenever your flight is delayed and you want to email your destination (as we all know how hard it is to get a mobile phone signal in an airport!)
I believe Montreal's Trudeau airport also has free WiFi throughout the facility, although I have not personally tested it. I would certainly agree that free WiFi hotspots are worthy of praise, whether or not they are intentional. We just moved into a new building and, before we received our furniture (or desktop computers) we were online via an unsecured WiFi connection and our laptop!
It's free at LAX too. you need to fight to get a seat next to a power socket though.
I went travelling in 2006, and I reckoned the main difference between travelling in 1996 was that I could book and find out information on nearly every step of the trip (except the buses in Serbia) online. I expect the difference in 2016 will be that I'd be able to do it on ubiquitous free wifi all the way.
