Internet Explorer 8 beta is go
- 6 Mar 08, 13:32 GMT
I've not tried the beta of IE8 myself but I'm interested if anyone else has....
reports that the response to it was mixed, appropriately enough at Mix 08 where it was launched.
It's very early , so probably not for ordinary users.
Two new interesting features that have been highlighted include webslicing, the ability to grab dynamic content from a page and then keep up to date with that content without having to launch the browser. Sounds a bit like Safari's web clippings...
And a new safety filter to protect users from phishing sites and malware.
The browser also has Facebook integration built-in.
Of course lets people do all of the above through extensions and toolbars, while a browser like Flock has integration with a whole host of social networking sites.
Perhaps more telling, Microsoft is making IE8 compliant with more web standards, which should make developers a lot happier and make the browsing experience for the majority of users a bit more enjoyable.

Although I welcome IE8's team to make the browser more standards compliant (I understand the IE8 has passed the Acid Test 2 for some time now) I can not fathom why they would intergrate Facebook into the browser. Surely this is handles better via an extension, like FireFox?
IE8 compliant?! I'll believe it when I see it!
I have just downloaded and installed the Beta and I think that there are many improvements. One that has already hit me several times is that when IE crashes (I've only had it for about 1/2 hour and already it has crashed 4 times) it remembers what page you were on and askes you if you want it to take you back there. Also its 'Developer Tools' are useful, showing HTML in a more readable style.
The browser wars, round three.
Firefox 3 vs Internet Explorer 8.
I'm currently using Firefox 3 as I write and am downloading IE8 to have a play with.
I'll put it bluntly: I love Firefox 3 and doubt that Internet Explorer 8 could do anything to halt it's success. The integrated search makes finding things one hell of a lot easier than previous and I have yet to stumble across any bugs in the current beta.
Sorry IE, but I think Firefox 3 looks to be set as the world's most popular browser.
The feature to 'remember what page you were on' can already be achieved using IE pro- a free add on. Or alternatively several applications for Firefox can do this (of course). I'll be interested to see the new IE8 but to be honest I anticipate my browser in the future will be firefox 3.0
I have been using Flock for a good while now. I must say, I am extremely impressed as things like del.icio.us and flickr integrate seamlessly.
The fact that IE8 is (supposedly) standards compliant is great for devs. But as a user it would take something quite big to get me off Flock now.
Unfortunately, Microsoft took the dubious decision to disable standards mode by default, even when there is a valid doctype for HTML 4 or XHTML 1 and correct links to valid CSS files.
In order to coax IE8 into displaying a website properly you have to bloat your page with extra markup.
it works great with windows xp sp3. and i like it the web developer tools.
It does not crash all the time.
Dont trust anything with the name Beta from Micrsoft, you will find 99% of the time, it will hog your CPU and memory and will be a pain to uninstall. Wait till the RC versions or full version to be safe.
