PS3 owners delight at XMB
- 30 Jun 08, 14:38 GMT
As I stated back in May, the in-game Cross Media Bar (XMB) for PlayStation 3 will be a reality on 2 July.
The lack of in-game XMB - so that gamers can check friend requests, send messages while still playing a gamer - has been one of the biggest gripes of PS3 owners since it launched.
But the feature will be introduced in the next firmware upgrade to the PlayStation.
Perhaps more importantly, the PS3 is introducing the idea of virtual "trophies", which represent your success in different games. These trophies will be on display to your friends.
Sound familiar? They should; trophies are a lot like Achievements on the Xbox 360.
And it's no surprise that Sony is introducing this feature: Achievements have been one of their truly innovative features of Xbox Live.
Super Stardust HD is the first game to implement trophies, with first-party titles like Buzz, LittleBigPlanet, Motorstorm Pacific Rift and Resistance 2 to follow.

Lack of in-game XMB hasn't really been much of an issue for me, but it'll be nice to have. The trophies should be quite fun, esp. if they release a GTA4 patch to make use of them...

Trophies on PS3 are BETTER than achivements, as they not include the problems with the 360 implementation, namely the fact that all games have different skill levels, but the same number of achievements, which are bundled together to get your GamerScore.

拢40 for a pad is a joke by the way, 拢35 is already to expensive but 拢40??

Yes 拢40 is expensive but it's expected after the whole rock band saga. Things here are more expensive but people will buy them and whilst people continue to buy them they will never lower the price.
I got two Dual Shock controllers from ebay from a chap based in the UK who imports them from the US. They cost me 拢28 each including postage.
Import them if you're really unhappy about paying 拢40.
I think the video looked really good that was posted on the US blog and I cannot wait. I'm not really liking the idea of having to do GTA again for the trophies (IF it gets patched).
Just think how sweet all those trophies will look in your apartment when Home arrives :D

Quite simply, there is nothing left to complain about.

I agree, PS3 users have been very patient but now in game XMB is here there will be something else to moan about. Something else Sony will be doing wrong etc
I can see the next moan that the game doesn't automatically pause when you press the PS button. Oh no, I have to press pause button before the PS button.
I just think some people should enjoy the console for what it is, a wonderful piece of technology which I am proud to own.
The DS3 really does add to the gaming experience. I have read reviews on it being tame on Motorstorm but I disagree, I've got it on the highest setting and it's fantastic.
As RevolutionBlues says you would be a fool these days to pay the full RRP for anything. GTA is on sale with Zavvi for 25GBP, If you haven't got it, get it!
I wonder how many developers will patch games for the trophy system? GTA, Drakes Fortune, COD4, Motorstorm and Resistance I hope!

Was anyone else surprised at what 3.40 *doesn't* support? eg. voice-chat in-game via XMB, in-game music streamed from PC/server, etc.
Seemed such a shame to release such good news, with so many caveats.

So does this spell the end for the Xbox, I think not, it still has thousends of loyal customers, and even if the PS3 becomes both supperier in hardware and software, microsoft will still continue to excell at gaining the most lucrative game licencises, excusivly on their console. Glad to see Sony finally joining the party when it comes to gamer achievements and in game communication.... only 2 and a half years late.
I can watch TV on my XBox as well, watch HD films/TV Shows (without purchasing it on an extortionate BluRay Disc) via XBox Live Video or streamed direct from my Windows Based PC.
I've had my problems.... I'm on my third box (2 x red ring of death). But each time I've only been without it for a few days.
There is nothing that Sony does enough better to warrant the extra money. I've had 2 and half years now of very enjoyable next generation gaming and as the Nintendo Wii has proved you do not need multi-core cell processing to deliver gaming entertainment in todays world. The XBox can deliver excellent cutting edge graphics games but also is a great platform for delivering cheap affordable and family orientated games via the "XBLive Arcade" service. Soon the open game development platform that microsoft distributed last year will start to bare fruit and we'll get great user developed content coming through.
The PS3 is overpriced, took too long to get to market, was missing features from the start like those dealt with in this update and those that have been added in previous ones. They dismissed the need for Rumble support on their controllers saying it was "last generation", only to go back on their word and release DualShock3 controllers. The BluRay format although beating HD-DvD in the new optical format wars is doomed to fail anyway. In opinion neither of them were going to have enough time to achieve market penetration before we see digital download delivery or solid state becoming the norm.

Maybe my maths is a bit shakey, but how can buying 3 Xboxes possibly be cheaper than 1 PS3. You knock the price and the lateness of functionality of the PS3, but conviently forget that you have to pay 拢60 for your wifi add on, 拢120 for a HD-DVD drive (now obselete), upgrade to an xbox elite if you want a HDMI connection (something which came as standard on the PS3 from day 1) and pay 拢40 for Xbox live when the PSN is free.
Having owned a PS3 from launch, it is obvious that Sony were concentrating on their new blu-ray technology before turning their attention to the gaming side of things, but the PS3 has caught up with the Xbox in terms of on-line experience plus with PS3 exclusive titles like MGS4 and GT Prologue, plus cross console games like GRID and GTA4, their can be no doubt which is the better console with a longer shelf life.
1 other thing, it is amusing to see all the xbox users jumping on the band wagon and seeing this as another opportunity to drone on about which console is better, but I know loads of xbox users that have bought a PS3 as well (particluarly because blu-ray is so impressive), but I definately dont feel the need to buy an xbox as well. I suspect that anyone with a PS3 is very happy with their purchase and todays firmware update only adds to its impressive funtionality.
Stating that you can watch online movies and download this from gamers that were slating the blu ray on the PS3 because it had nothing to do with gaming...........bit of a u-turn me thinks and definately sour grapes........!

There is no denying Sony are late on this one and I think they failed in listening to the consumer. Labelling rumble as last gen etc, in game communication as not important but when they have seen how much these features are wanted they have responded.
"I can watch TV on my XBox as well, watch HD films/TV Shows (without purchasing it on an extortionate BluRay Disc) via XBox Live Video or streamed direct from my Windows Based PC."
Blu-Ray is expensive because it's new, look how expensive DVD's were themselves when they came out. The point here is that the storage Blu-Ray offers is going to be a key part in future development of games. Developers are crying out for more space on discs and I think this will be a real issue for M$ in the future.
"I've had my problems.... I'm on my third box (2 x red ring of death). But each time I've only been without it for a few days."
Wether you have been without it a few days or a few weeks this shouldn't be happening. Why can't they build a quality product that is meant to last? The build quality of the PS3 is much much better, it's quieter, doesn't have a ridiculous sized powerpack trailing from the back of it and is more pleasing to the eye.
"There is nothing that Sony does enough better to warrant the extra money."
Tosh, there are plenty of things!
"The BluRay format although beating HD-DvD in the new optical format wars is doomed to fail anyway. In opinion neither of them were going to have enough time to achieve market penetration before we see digital download delivery or solid state becoming the norm."
I think we're a long way from digital downloads becoming the norm. Not until people have decent enough broadband connections and a decent sized HDD.
Don't take me as a complete PS3 fanboy, I am not, we have both in our house and I contemplated buying a 360 purely for Bioshock and now I have no need to do that.
Microsoft can drop the price all they want and pay for as many timed exclusives as it wants but the PS3 is catching up and catching up fast.
I praise Microsoft for it's innovation and I will fully admit Sony have made plenty of mistakes. After all competition is good for both machines.

Ideas such as?
XMB actually was copied by microsoft then renamed to "blades"...XMB actually came from PSX (Ps2 with a dvd writer and tv tuner with a hard drive, JAP only)
Home?...Home is really second life..360 has nothing like that
Online gaming was copied from SATURN!..Ms never came up with that idea..Was copied from the late Sega.
Of recent, There has actually been a slowdown in 360's sold in europe if you look at sales reports from gamesindustry.biz and gamestracker..You will notice Ps3's are selling more than 360s.
Technical ideas?..Such as?...3 Red rings of death?..Disk drives that chew your disc?...Overheating?..Microsoft rushed the product and have paid the price for it with problems.
By all means , im no fan of Playstation even though i own all 3 consoles, but to say 360 will succeed over ps3 i would disagree.
~~
You can also stream music from your PC all the same through windows media player..Look it up on the internet
How is Blu Ray to be doomed?..sorry but that is daft. 1080p Picture..Better sound quality..More data to be held on a disc.
Can you honestly say to me MGS4 would fit on a standard DVD at 4.7gb?..C'mon!...Wouldnt even fit the cutscenes!.
Blu Ray has beaten HD DVD..Nuff said thats that. It IS the next generation of DVD..All film producing companies are adopting the format now.
Yes Ps3 was late..But how many hardware failures or scratched discs did it have in its first 3 months compared to xbox?...I seem to remember Perfect Dark Zero being part of the scratch disc team?
Games have been slow coming out, I will admit that, And the ones at launch werent exactly inspiring, But tradition dictates this.
~~
I look at Ps3 and by far its the better system;
Free online gaming
Blu Ray Player (best player at the moment according to which mag)
Expandale hard drive
Ability to watch freeview HD tv from end of this year
Can put Linux on.
Web browsing
Or how about the ability to download BLU RAY films to your ps3 and keep them!...Not3 days like market place!.
I can go on
I've had 4 Xbox 360's all had faults with them, 2 Premiums, 1 Arcade and an Elite. If machine cant even do a basic function without going faulty after about 7 months, what good is that?
I still believe that Wii is the best bet for anyone and the sooner Microsoft and Sony comes to terms that raw power isnt everything in a machine, The better it will be for the games industry.

Once again we see claims that the PS3 was late. In fact, the 360 was rushed into production early and we all know the consequences of that.
Finally, outside of the US the 360 sells less every week than any other platform - including handhelds. Time people just accepted that.
