Problems for Sony PS3 firmware

  • Darren Waters

After months and months of waiting, Sony finally launched in-game Cross Media Bar (XMB) browsing via a firmware update.

But it appears there's a problem with the firmware update 2.40 causing PS3s to freeze up. And so Sony have pulled the update while they work on a fix.

You can find out the latest .

I hope no-one's been caught out.

I installed 2.4 before it was removed, and it's a big improvement. The problem with the firmware only causing a problem during the installation of it. If people already have it installed they should be OK. Sony have said they have not had any calls from people with it installed. Just people having problems during the installation process.

The in-game XMB looks good, but I think the addition of Trophies is the biggest addition on this one. Just need the game developers to patch some titles to make full use of it now!

    @ALL Anyone using Remote Play?

I'm keen to hear some thoughts on this.

I downloaded it first thing yesterday morning and have had no problems whatsoever. As said above the problem appears to be during installation and once that's out of the way successfully you should be ok.

In game XMB is a _very_ welcome addition and I've already been using it to arrange online matches.

I also downloaded Super Stardust HD to get my hands on some Trophies - I'm betting sales of this game went through the roof yesterday! Hoping for more patches soon to make Trophies available in more games, fingers crossed the current FW2.40 withdrawal doesn't delay them...

To be fair to Darren, I am a 360 owner and read lots on various computer game sites and had not heard of this problem (360's being bricked). Although he definitely should have made it clear it is only a small number of PS3's getting screwed.

I think the issue is Sony made quite a song and dance about this update and it fails to provide alot of what they talked up (in game chat is text only, no music in game as standard, only one game that currently supports trophies etc). I'm sure the percentage of bricked consoles is tiny and nothing compared to the problems MS have had with the 360, but Sony are screwing this generation up after two very good consoles.

And I have no allegiance to any multinational company, just whoever has the best games at the time!

No problems here. Installed it yesterday without a hitch.

PS3 will just keep getting better and better.

Well I just want to say that thanks for the warning to any other would be updaters and with this article I am now armed with the fact sony have to replace my console otherwise they would have tried to charge me that is if your warranty is out of date.

Plus if you remove your HDD that will infringe your warranty.

Now Sony have confirmed they didn't test their firmware properly I can get a new machine.

  • Comment number 8.

Oh I am one of those poor buggers who's console is up the duff.

And now I cannot get my fix of online COD4

  • Comment number 9.

    @Redseraphi

Removing the hard drive does not effect the warranty at all, Sony even show you how to do it in the manual. The fix is to reformat the hard drive - an annoyance admittedly but at least you can have your ps3 running again in 20mins or so.

  • Comment number 10.

@mgillespie I wrote about it purely because I mentioned the update in a post just a few days ago.

    There's no agenda.

  • Comment number 11.

As far as I am concerned the best thing anyone can do is forget about the firmware upgrade and take a sledgehammer to their PS3 and the yout next step is to buy a Wii :)

    @darrenwaters

Do you mean anyone using RemotePlay on this version of the firmware, or just in general?

Since I've installed 2.4 I haven't used remote play, but I have used it on previous versions of the firmware. It's quite good, you can stream PSOne games straight over the net that are installed on your PS3 and play them on your PSP. It does play as if the framerate has dropped slightly, but I wouldn't call it unusable, just noticable. But still very good. Videos, music, pictures etc, if you have a media server set up you can stream straight from there too the PSP via the PS3.

Any other questions, just ask. Though I do believe there are a few articles out there by gaming journalists giving their opinions on remote play.

I downloaded it last night and fortunately no issues. I have a 60GB launch model, anyone with a 60GB experiencing problems? No issues at present. One thing I noticed with the in game XMB is that it doesn't keep your theme but thats no big deal. I have the air brush theme and when you press the XMB it just displays the standard theme.

I downloaded Superstar dust HD simply because of the trophies! Developers need to implement these because it will sell games to people like me. Drakes Fortune is being patched, hope others follow soon.

The Simple fix for this problem:

Reformat the HDD! Take out the HDD and connect it to your PC, reformat in Windows as NTFS. Put the HDD back in the PS3 and the shiny black Sony will put the HDD back into working order. But you will lose any unsaved data.... THATS WHAT THE BACK UP UTILITY IS FOR, YOU SHOULD HAVE USED IT!!!!

    Important Info:

Removing (or even replacing) the HDD WILL NOT void your warranty!

Sony have endorsed the process of removing the standard HDD for a larger one, and stated that this will not affect the warranty at all.

    Oh and PS.

I didn't have any problems with update, PS3 works better than ever... mind you it worked fantastic before! :-)

  • Comment number 16.

    Redseraphi

As already stated, This does NOT void your warranty. They even encourage it!!

    I have a 320gb HDD in mine.

I didn't manage to get the update in time so im still on 2.36.

There were lots of issues with Xbox's updates..How come these were not noted?

  • Comment number 17.

    I've heard COD4 isn't getting an trophy patch :(.

They say they will be putting their focus on new titles.

I've a feeling GTA and MGS will get patched soon. Burnout paradise is also getting upgraded soon!

  • Comment number 18.

It's generally been fine for me, however when I just tried to fire up the Battlefield: Bad Company demo, it froze on loadup.

Apart form that not been playing PS3 much today as I've been busy graduating! lol....

That must be embarrassing for Sony... whoops! I hope they manage to find a solution soon for version 2.41

  • Comment number 19.

oooh right didnt realise it was just whilst installing the update. glad it didnt screw up for me, wouldn't like to have to start GTA4 all over again!! :)

  • Comment number 20.

Great update, no problems at all.

  • Comment number 21.

If you want the 2.4 update but don't want to wait its already floating over the internet, in various places, just use the backup utility and then when you are all backed up launch the update from a USB stick or external HDD.

Had a few friends that missed out on the initial patch.

So far im happy with this in-game XMB, however it is another feature that should of been there from the start.

with the launch of Duel Shock 3 in the UK today i feel like we are starting to get there !! :)

  • Comment number 22.

Well i have not noticed any problems since i installed the update, but thanks for the information Darren :)

I wonder why people like to post comments on here saying they don't like what is written about, if they don't like the topic then they dont have to read it

  • Comment number 23.

Yes, using Remote Play here, any issues with 2.40 specifically? Just tried for the first time yesterday actually and am amazed by it.

  • Comment number 24.

Watch out Darren. You aren't supposed to inform people that an update that was released has been pulled due to bugs in the software. The fanboys will get you for it.

As for the comparisons to the lack of updates for the 360 problems that were encountered. As an owner of both consoles, I don't think the update with the 360 was based on software including features that should have been on the console from the moment it launched!

Its just a bug. Will take a few days, then it'll be fixed. I wish the fanboys wouldn't take it personally... I mean, 360 fanboys could get up in arms over the lack of 360 coverage due to PS3.

Enjoy the games, not the manufacturer.

  • Comment number 25.

Well just to mention, mine upgraded fine.

More importantly, PlayTV is on the official PS3 website. That means we get recordable TV on the PS3 and can also watch wirelessly on PSP.

How cool is that going to be!!!

    @Mighty Morfa Power Ranger

It's no good saying people should have used the back up utility. Ok fine anyone who is truly worried about losing their saves should be doing a backup at least once a week, and if they don't and lose anything they can't complain cos the feature is there. However, the feature is only good if you're backing up with the intent of restoring on a new HDD. The back up just takes too long if you have a substantial amount on your HDD, which is very likely due to the MGS4, GTA4, DMC etc installs for at least 4GB each. You could argue you can delete these before you do the backup but really if the backup was that clever it should just ignore these files as they can be reinstalled after the restore.

My point here is that the backup utility can take a few hours, and thats really, as far as I'm concerned, is too much effort for a firmware update. The fact of the matter is the firmware update should not have bricked any machines, simple as that. The only defence a PS3 user should need to take against the PS3 being bricked while installing the new firmware is a UPS incase the power goes off during. I would seriously suggest you get these for anything that has a HDD inside it, unless of course you're not too bothered about losing data. They might seem exspensive but you'll be swearing by it the day your power goes off and you've still got time to cancel an install correctly and shut down your device.

With the benefit of hindesight it's all very well and good saying people should have done this or that, and that they're stupid if they didn't. But it's not really helping and what you suggested, with all due respect, takes more effort than a user should have to make for a basic firmware update.

  • Comment number 27.

Mine updated fine and no problems so far. I haven't tried RemotePlay since the update though. Is there supposed to be problems with it?

  • Comment number 28.

Can I just say that backing up your save games is not so hard at all, most of them will backup to a memory stick, so dont try and use that one as an excuse for not backing up your saves.

Takes 2 mins and is no effort at all unless your name is Morfa loool

  • Comment number 29.

I haven't had any problems at all.

Darren, i think your article should say that only a number have been affected.

  • Comment number 30.

No problems here either, upgraded from USB, mine is a 40GB model with a 320GB HDD

  • Comment number 31.
