Technical problems

Post categories:

Steve Herrmann Steve Herrmann | 13:39 UK time, Thursday, 19 February 2009

The ´óÏó´«Ã½ News website was temporarily affected by technical problems this lunchtime which meant users in the UK were unable to get onto the site for about 20 minutes as a result of problems with our London servers. We're sorry for this, the site is accessible again now and we are looking into exactly what happened and why as urgently as we can.

UPDATE, 05:40PM: We found out what the problem was caused by - it was faulty code on a new deployment by the technical team. This has now been fixed. Sorry again to anyone who tried unsuccessfully to get onto the site earlier today.

Thanks - there are still a number of links on the front page which can't find the relevant page eg. "´óÏó´«Ã½ Trust backs Thompson on Gaza".

My issue is with iPlayer. Before iPlayer I could easily pick a radio format and choose a program and listen to it.
Now iPlayer sits there, sometimes it works, most often it asks me to listen with RealPlayer.

Is the issue the fact that I am on a Mac? My Safari browser?

I use the ´óÏó´«Ã½ as my main web source and feel very frustrated by iPlayer.

Nammy50 - I think iPlayer uses the same streams as the old Radio Player (for now), so it's strange that you should be having new problems.

´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer has a very useful help site at www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/help - it would be well worth checking here.

Alternatively, have you tried raising the issue on, say, the iPlayer message board or with the ´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer team? They, rather unlike the people at ´óÏó´«Ã½ News Online, are in a position to help you.
There's a link to email them at the bottom of every iPlayer help article, or you can call 03709 000 223 from 0800 to 2030 every day.

Well done for fixing the problem so quickly, 20 minutes is pretty fast and also for identifying the cause and again for fixing it. Very efficient.

Sorry ´óÏó´«Ã½ but you have not fixed "our technical difficulties". Try some of the links on the main HYS, News, and Sports pages and they hang before presenting an infinite partially completed page. I have checked this using over twenty different computers and they all behave the same. Over to you.

Like mobele, the radio pages (have tried radio 4, 7 and also local) are asking me for a user name and password today. I live in France and am lost without my radio - please fix this as soon as possible. I must just thank the ´óÏó´«Ã½ for making such a wide range of radio and programmes available. Well done!

Apparently the much vaunted iPlayer is broken again. It comes up with an embedded Real Player now but demanding a User Name and Password for this content on the nmswww0.mh.bbc.co.uk server. Perhaps the server needs restarting?
I does not seem to matter if I start with /iplayer or go to the general shedule web pages, when it comes to the point where anyone has to press the play button it is all password protected! Yet there is no where to register to get a User Name and Password for this content on the nmswww0.mh.bbc.co.uk server! Very Strange. Did you fire someone who password protected the whole bbc.co.uk web site before they left?
Very dissapointed that almost none of the Listen Again on-line pages function any more and what gives with the demanding a User Name and Password for this content on the nmswww0.mh.bbc.co.uk server?
    Come on ´óÏó´«Ã½ get your act together PLEASE? ? ? ? ?

Antichthon - yes, there were a few links not working as the site came back - we fixed these as quickly as we could.

Nammy50: No, it's not because you have a Mac. But, since you raise the topic, as one of the many Maccies out there (now 20% of all new computers sold and increasing) I have long been surprised at the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s PC-bias, especially when it calls the device in question "iPlayer". Wonder where they got that idea from?

To be fair they did belatedly introduce a Mac version, but missed the chance to embrace the better technology that comes with QuickTime.

As at 9.00 a.m. I'm still unable to "listen-live". Being asked for a username and password, so something is still wrong.

We all moan at the ´óÏó´«Ã½ from now and again (I still haven't got over the Gaza matter), but it has to be said that almost alone amongst the news websites, the ´óÏó´«Ã½ not only tries, but can be seen to be trying. Keeping us advised on technical problems is just one reason to give credit where it is due.

I have just been watching the ´óÏó´«Ã½ report on the Australin bushfires, and the text at the bottom of the screen read " day of morning". Have not any of your text writers been to school? Do any of them speak English?

I have been unable to tune in to R4 on either of my DAB radios. The programme 'disappeared' at around 9.45am this morning and is still absent. There are occasional bleeps of sound. Help and explain please. I must also say that I find the splutters which occur frequently on the hours are a constant source of irritation.

Geoffers007: I've sent the reports of problems here to the iPlayer team.

braidian: Oh dear - it seems to have been fixed since you posted this comment. There's no excuse.

For the past month or so I have been unable to use the bbc news pages. Sometimes the main page will open. If I view a page eg England, and then click back it usually sits there until it times out. I had this problem earlier this year, and you did somthing that fixed it. I have 5 computers here on a broadband network, and they all do the same thing.
    All are running win xp.
Any help would be appreciated, because as far as i'm concerned your news site is the best [when it works!].

    regards and thanks....john
